October 27, 2014We have finished Week 9 of college and high school football in Ohio. In high school football, the playoffs begin in two weeks and a lot of seeding was determined this week. Hudson solidified itself as the top Northeast Ohio team with their win over Mentor. St. Edward is starting to rev up for the playoffs, while Bedford remained undefeated. In college football, Ohio State struggled on offense in their double overtime win over Penn State. The OAC elite of John Carroll and Mount Union continued their dominating run through the league with blowout wins. It was a great week with a lot of big matchups and exciting games.
So let’s take a look at Week 9’s installment of the Ohio College and High School Football Roundup!
College Football
Ohio State slips past Penn State 31-24
Ohio State continued their winning streak with this sloppy win over Penn State. The Buckeyes struggled to get their offense going and had to outlast Penn State in double overtime. Quarterback JT Barrett, who threw for 74 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions, led the Buckeyes. He added 75 yards and scored both the overtime touchdowns on the ground. The Bucks defense were the main reason the Buckeyes were able to win. The Bucks defense held Penn State to 240 yards of total offense and forced two turnovers. Ohio State did not play well versus the Nittany Lions and must fix the multiple problems that arose during the game. The Bucks are now 6-1 on the season.

Cincinnati beats South Florida 34-17
Cincinnati moved to 4-3 on the year with this win over South Florida. The Bearcats were led by their running back Mike Boone, who rushed for 212 yards and a touchdown. He had to take charge after quarterback Gunner Kiel left in the second quarter with an injury after throwing for 196 yards and a touchdown and rushing for another touchdown. Former Maple Heights quarterback Shaq Washington led the Bearcats in receiving with 12 catches for 163 yards.

Ohio falls to Western Michigan 42-21
Ohio fell to Western Michigan and moved to 4-5 on the season. Western Michigan had a great performance from their freshman running back Jarvion Franklin. Franklin rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on thee day. Broncos quarterback Zach Terrell threw for 344 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Bobcats quarterback Derrius Vick threw for 246 yards, a touchdown, and an interception in the loss.

Akron loses to Ball State 35-21
Akron lost their second straight game with this loss to Ball State and are now 4-4 this year. The Cardinals had a strong running game with three players scoring a touchdown on the ground. Jahwan Edwards led the running attack with 121 yards and a touchdown. He also added 57 receiving yards. Akron running back Conor Hundley rushed for 72 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Kent State falls to Miami (OH) 10-3
The Golden Flashes lost a tough game versus Miami (OH) and are now a lowly 1-7. The Miami (OH) defense held Kent State to a field goal with just 285 yards of total offense. RedHawks quarterback Andrew Hendrix threw for 120 yards and rushed for 104 yards and the only touchdown of the game. Kent State quarterback Colin Reardon threw for 201 yards and an interception.

Toledo slips past Massachusetts 42-35
Toledo won the game with a late game touchdown by Terry Swanson. Toledo had a great performance from former Willoughby South running Kareem Hunt. Hunt rushed for 198 yards and a touchdown in the win. Toledo quarterback Logan Woodside threw for 225 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. The Rockets move to 5-3 with this victory.

Notre Dame College falls to Glenville State (WV) 41-38
Notre Dame lost a tough battle this week versus Glenville State (WV) and is now 5-3 on the season. Glenville State running back Rahmann Lee rushed for 121 yards and two touchdowns, while also catching four passes for 100 yards. Notre Dame and former Willoughby South quarterback Ray Russ threw for 438 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in the loss.

Malone loses to Lake Erie 55-34
Malone continued their tough season with another loss this time versus Lake Erie. Lake Erie was very successful on the ground, rushing for 491 yards and seven touchdowns. Lake Erie running back Anthony Bilal rushed for 241 yards and three touchdowns. Malone quarterback Brandyn Eckhart threw for 183 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, while also adding 69 yards on the ground. Malone falls to 1-7 on the season.

Youngstown State slips past South Dakota State 30-27
Youngstown State continued their strong season with a win over South Dakota State. Penguins quarterback Hunter Wells threw for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a touchdown on the ground. Penguins running back Martin Ruiz rushed for 132 yards and a touchdown in the win. Youngstown State moves to 6-2 on the season.

Dayton falls to San Diego 40-29
Dayton lost their second game of the season this week to San Diego and is now 5-2 on the year. San Diego running back Dallas Kessman rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns. San Diego quarterback Keith Williams threw for 163 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 27 yards and a touchdown. Dayton running back Connor Kacsor rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Baldwin Wallace loses to Otterbein 20-9
The Yellow Jackets fall to 4-3 on the year with this loss to Otterbein. Otterbein’s defense held Baldwin Wallace to just 294 yards of total offense, forced three fumbles, and allowed only three field goals. Otterbein quarterback Brick Davis threw for 243 yards and a touchdown. Yellow Jackets quarterback Tyler Moeglin threw for 170 yards and rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown.

John Carroll routs Capital 71-7
John Carroll remained unbeaten at 7-0 with this dominating win over Capital. John Carroll and former St. Ignatius quarterback Mark Myers threw for 212 yards and four touchdowns. John Carroll and former Benedictine receiver Marshall Howell caught four passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Former Glenville receiver added three receptions for 100 yards and a touchdown for John Carroll.

Mount Union dominates Wilmington (OH) 74-7
Mount Union continued their dominance in the OAC with this blowout win over Wilmington (OH). Mount Union and former St. Edward quarterback Kevin Burke threw for 154 yards and three touchdowns, while also adding a touchdown on the ground. The Purple Raiders had 13 players have at least one carry in the blowout win over Wilmington. Mount Union moves to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

High School Football
Hudson beats Mentor 41-27
Hudson solidified their top ranking with an impressive win over Mentor. Hudson controlled the game behind their team leader quarterback Mitch Guadagni. Guadagni threw for 223 yards and five touchdowns, but also had four interceptions in the game. On the ground, he rushed for 138 yards. Guadagni threw the ball to many targets on the day. Four players had at least one touchdown reception on the day, including two touchdown catches by Will Hogan. Mentor quarterback Jake Floriea threw for 207 yards and two interceptions, but ran for 116 yards and two touchdowns. Hudson moves to 9-0, while Hudson falls to 8-1 on the season.

Mentor vs Strongsville (Fri. 7pm)
Strongsville falls to Brunswick 27-14
Strongsville fell to their third loss of the year and is now 6-3 on the season. Brunswick running back Michael Bekeny rushed for 109 yards and a touchdown in the win. The Brunswick defense was able to slow down the Mustang offense on Friday. Mustang quarterback Bobby Cole scored both touchdowns for Strongsville, running for one and throwing for the other score.

Solon defeats Twinsburg 28-7
Solon got back on the winning track with this victory over Twinsburg. Solon quarterback Johnny Mooney passed for 166 yards and four touchdowns on the day. Solon’s Jake McCurry was the recipient of two Mooney touchdown passes. Solon’s defense held Twinsburg to just 18 yards rushing. Solon is now 6-3 on the year.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary beats Massillon Washington 28-20
Saint Vincent-Saint Mary won a statement game versus the tough Massillon Tigers. Irish quarterback Dom Davis threw for 265 yards and two touchdowns in the win. His main target was Markus Hurd, who had seven receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown. Irish running back Vince Lockett rushed for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Irish defense held Massillon to just one touchdown in the second half and Ohio State quarterback commit Danny Clark threw for just 156 yards and a touchdown. The Irish are 7-2 on the year.

St. Edward beats Cincinnati Moeller 24-10
St. Edward continued their winning streak with a convincing win over Cincinnati Moeller. The Eagles defense forced Moeller to throw four interceptions, including one taken back for a touchdown by Matt Carandang. Shaun Crawford and Andrew Dowell added a touchdown each on the ground in this win. The Eagles move to 7-2 on the season.

Glenville defeats Cleveland JFK 23-6
Glenville remains perfect in the Cleveland Senate League and moves to 7-2 with this win. Trevon Story, who scored two touchdowns in the victory, led Glenville’s offensive effort. The Tarblooders defense scored a touchdown when Ralph Davis intercepted a JFK pass and took it back 75 yards for a touchdown.

St. Ignatius falls to Cincinnati St. Xavier 24-10
St. Ignatius fell in a tough game this week to Cincinnati St. Xavier. The Wildcats were held to just a field goal in the last three quarters of the game. The Wildcats could not muster enough offense against the stout St. Xavier defense. In the loss, St. Ignatius quarterback Dennis Grosel threw for 198 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. The Wildcats move to 6-3 on the season.

Avon takes down Olmsted Falls 28-13
Avon moved to 8-1 on the season with this tough win over Olmsted Falls. Avon’s Sonny Cooper rushed for two of the Eagles four touchdowns in the game. Avon’s Jake Sopko and Zack Torbert each scored a touchdown in the victory.

Benedictine cruises past Walsh Jesuit 26-7
Benedictine was impressive once again this week when they took down Walsh Jesuit. Bengals running back Dontez Rash rushed for 104 yards. Benedictine running back DeCavilon Reese rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Ohio State commit Jerome Baker added 79 yards and a touchdown on the ground for the Bengals. Benedictine moves to 8-1 on the year.

Bedford shutsout Warren G. Harding 23-0
Bedford remained unbeaten at 9-0 with this blanking of Warren G. Harding. Bearcats running back Chawntez Moss rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. His backfield mate London Cloud rushed for 128 yards. Warren G. Harding only mustered 79 yards of total offense in the loss.

Nordonia cruises past Revere 34-13
Nordonia remained perfect at 9-0 with this victory over Revere. Nordonia quarterback David Murray threw for 286 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Denzel Ward caught two of Murray’s three touchdown passes on the day. Nordonia’s Denzel Ward and Chase Ryba each picked off a Revere pass, while Noah Pennypacker had two interceptions for Nordonia.

That was a great game between Hudson and Mentor certainly better then the performance Ohio State gave Saturday. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky then good.
