Dan Gilbert: Luxury Tax Will Never Be an Issue
October 29, 2014LeBron’s return highlights offseason of Cavs oddities: While We’re Waiting…
October 30, 2014It’s the ultimate in biased quotes and nobody’s denying it. Tampa Bay Bucs wide receiver Mike Evans spoke to the media about his time with Johnny Manziel and didn’t hide the fact that he’s in the tank for his friend. That being said, after reading his quotes, you don’t get the sense that Johnny Manziel is being anything other than forthright when he’s saying all the right things. Mike Evans’ quotes are full of all those same “right things.”
On how it eats Manziel up not being able to play:
“He’s the ultimate competitor. I know he wants to be out there bad, but he’ll do whatever the team needs him to do – sit back and learn or whatever they have him do, he’s going to do it. He’s a team player.”On how good Manziel was in addition to having him as a good receiver:
“He was one of the best players in the country coming out, and some of the things he did were spectacular if you watch the games. Playing with him, people underestimated his arm strength. He throws a great ball, and he’s a student of the game. He’s very smart.”On how Manziel’s skills will transfer to the NFL once he starts playing:
“I think he’ll transition well. The game hasn’t really seen a quarterback like him, I don’t think. They say Doug Flutie and guys like that, but he can throw just as good as the 6-5 prototypical quarterbacks, and he can run like (Jets QB) Michael Vick. He’s a great player, and when he gets his shot I think he’s never going to come off the field.”On saying he thought Manziel should be the starter at the rookie symposium and if he stills feels that way after seeing what QB Brian Hoyer has done:
“I said that because that’s one of my best friends, and I’m going to choose my best friend. That’s their team’s decision because they’re winning now. I can’t talk too bad about that.”
The key quote for me in the whole thing is that when Manziel gets his shot, “I think he’s never going to come off the field.” Now, it will be awkward to see Manziel playing defense… Get it? But really, this is the one place that I kind of agree with Mike Evans. I think that given a bit of time to learn, absorb and prepare, Johnny Manziel can absolutely shock everyone with his brand of play on the field. He’s guaranteed to be a wild contrast in comparison to almost every other QB in the league with his athleticism, playmaking potential and under-hyped arm strength.
These are the things that had me so excited for Johnny Manziel during the draft, and the longer we get into the season and Manziel hasn’t been thrust out there too soon, the more excited I get about the prospect. Even if I have to wait until next year to see it.

You better talk me up good Mike, get back here, I’m talking to you.

You owe me Mike! You’d be nobody if I hadn’t blindly chucked all those balls in your general diriection play after play…
Hey, trusting a guy to out-jump the coverage is an important skill in the college game. Not every QB is willing to risk those passes. And, sometimes he found the guy left open too…

And don’t forget about dodging multiple college DL. (none of whom run under a 6.5) That’s a skill sure to translate well into the NFL.

both seemed to work okay for Eli in the Superbowl (helmet catch).
but yeah, I agree he needs to learn what he can and cannot do in the NFL. it’s why this is Hoyer’s year.
If we can only get our Dline to play like that NYG Dline that kept him within 20…
Alex Mack . . .

In fairness, he’s probably never seen a RT execute a seven step drop faster than him. And Schwartz didn’t even attempt to stay between the DT and his QB as he got pushed back at ludicrous speed. Stunningly bad.
Well, I don’t think the plan is to draw up plays like the one from the Kentucky game.
My one complaint about that play…. slide a little earlier. You got the first down. Your health isn’t worth an extra meaningless yard or two. Don’t even let any defensive player get close to you.
Also – he sure slides better than Hoyer.
I don’t know. To me, it looks like he just sees the field in really slow motion while running and knows precisely what he’s doing (not yet while in the pocket – but look out if he ever catches up to that part of the game!). He sure had his head on a swivel during that whole run. It’s stuff like this that makes me anxious to see him play, but I’ll be patient.
Anyway, it’s definitely better than the head first thing he also pulled in that game (or maybe the Wash game). Yuck.
I’m just thinking that we play the Steelers twice a season. I don’t doubt for a second that there’s more than a few players on that team (and around the league) that wouldn’t be afraid to take 15 yards and a fine to take a cheap shot.
i have a feeling we will see this gif about a million more times
They just brought one out of retirement.
Just from me!
is this the father/son scrimage? that CB looks to be what 4’9″?
You can have the posting rights for that one. lol
Nah. Josh just becomes 7’2″ when the ball’s in the air.
I’ll happily share it, but it really does express my feels. I mean, look at Mack take 2 players out of that play! He sees, makes a decision, and moves to block the second guy in a fraction of a second. That’s the stuff that you just don’t replace.
I know I’m stating the obvious, but that is a play that Hoyer literally could never make.
Why that matters, is that it’s another dimension of our offense that could put us over the top.
As you say below, his sense of the pressure and awareness is incredible. I’m starting to be more and more persuaded. IF, and only IF, he can get close to matching Hoyer’s knowledge of the offense, you got to get Johnny in.
Honestly, I don’t think any other QB in the NFL makes that play. Granted, it was against backups (and maybe deep backups), but the sheer athleticism (hate the word, but I’ve got nothing better) is unmatched. I sound like a total Rapunzel, but this guy potentially brings something that the league may have never seen. I know I’m in the extreme minority, but I’ve been ready for “Manziel Time” since the Jacksonville game. Not “full time,” but I think the Browns should find some time.
any other QB in the NFL? I’ll assume current QBs and ages factoring in.
healthy RGIII definitely could (unsure of current health)
I think Wilson could, but he likely stays in the pocket
Cam may have to stiff-arm that 1st defender, but he likely gets the 1st down too
I stand by it.
A healthy RG3 (merciful and mighty) is the only one that I think really compares, but “healthy RG3” is a fictional character. He does not exist. Wilson does not have the speed and quickness, and if he stays in that pocket, he gets sacked. Newton is an enigma. Probably “could” make that play, but wouldn’t. Doesn’t run with the same speed and abandon (and doesn’t make the decision to run that quickly – Manziel may be too quick with that read, but he is DEAD QUICK with that read). Those guys might get the first down, but they don’t make “that” play.
Colin Kaepernick? Colin Kaepernick.
Ok, good justification. But, also understand that it was Kyle (and daddy Shanahan) that forced injured RGIII back into the game to become broken RGIII.
I hope that Kyle learned his lesson.
Intriguing. Can you show your work? I will take this under advisement, but would really like to see a gif, please.
Based on Manziel’s playing time, I’d say he learned his lesson. Maybe too well.
I think Wilson is the closest to make that type of play (and the best model for JFF). He’s got great vision downfield, makes quick decisions, runs with skill but great awareness (and not with reckless abandon).
PS. I hate that the Shannys got scapegoated for breaking the RGIII. He is very talented, but he was not that great of an investment for all those picks, prone to get hurt, and thus prone to get re-injured (not on the Shannys’ watch). Fine, the rat family ran their course and got run out of Wash, but that narrative is kind of unfair that they forever destroyed RGIII.
Not scape-goated. What actually happened.
Yes, RGIII’s style of play (and Manziels) lead them more prone to getting injured especially when you factor in his size.
However, I’m not talking about the initial injury or any injuries after that season. I’m talking about putting a completely gimpy RGIII who was laboring out there and ended up further injurying himself on a non-contact play he should never have even been on the field to have.
Much like how I blame Jerry Jones for forcing Romo back onto the field despite his back making him more immobile and with less ability to throw than Brandon Weeden (as he demonstrated when he bypassed an open Witten on 2nd and 2 in OT). No reason to risk the long-term future of your QB in that situation.
C-Bus brings up a great point. I blame beer for his name not coming to mind.

Or

Okay. That’s fair. Kaepernick makes that play.
But now I have 2 questions:
1) Does this mean we have a Kaepernick sitting on the bench?
2) Which of these 2 guys is the bigger d-bag?
Ah, I read your phrase, “…to become broken RGIII” as meaning that they permanently broke him as opposed to just that play. Ok, I’ll accept that they shouldn’t have put him in there and might be partially culpable…but they generally get blamed for destroying him…and that’s unfair. He’s a fragile guy (and his heart and attitude are in question too as far as I’m concerned). As to the latter points, JFF seems to be ahead of RGIII.
It’s all good. And, I hope so on JFF. He did seem to keep his eyes downfield better in college and noted he needs to learn to slide quicker in the NFL. But, until we see it on the field, it’s hard to judge for sure.
I’ve said for months that the Browns’ situation is Smith/Kaepernick redux. The heady guy who’s good but not spectacular and the guy behind him who needs to sit and learn a bit.
Kaep is bigger. More a Cam/Roeth mold QB than a Wilson/RGIII that Manziel is. However, Ezzie is spot-on in that it is quite similar to that SF situation.
as to ( 2 ), it’s Johnny. I mean, yeah, it’s Johnny.

Switching gears mgbode, since I know you’re a family man: I just came across this gem while looking for a new shirt for my son. They’ve got discounted TRich, McCoy, Weeden and even Hillis jerseys at low low prices! Man it’s like a graveyard there…a graveyard of discounts that is.
http://www.fansedge.com/Cleveland_Browns_Toddler/kidssizes/2t
Awesome. Thanks for looking out.
Coincidentally enough, I’ve been looking to replace their Edwards jerseys for XMAS this year (yes, I’m a dirt cheap man and bought them for $10 right after he was traded).
Question though: What could their justification be of having Weeden’s youth jersey still be $40, but Colt’s and Richardson’s both much lower ($28 & 25 respectively).
Target still has some TRich and other jerseys too. I think the only justification could be that these places are at least a year behind (and think Weeden is still the QB). I’m going to say screw it and buy a Weeden one! My son won’t know the difference.
Also for the life of me, whenever I see a Charlie Frye (or insert a thousand names) jersey bobbing in the stands, I can’t figure out why anyone would buy a Browns jersey. It’s about on par with the lifespan of a goldfish
that was one example, but guys like Sheldon & Gocong were $40 too. just seemed random and arbitrary on pricing.
and yeah, buying new jerseys seems crazy with as much turnover as we have. I guess it’s like those that are always buying the “newest phone” regardless of if they have to pay full price for it.
—————————————
the non-cheap side of me really wants to just go with Dawson jerseys though. they doubly work here since Phil & family live here in Austin (and he went to UTx).
—————————————
I found a game youth T-Rich jersey for $15. But, as cheap as I am, I could never give money to a place called “Modell’s”
http://www.modells.com/product/cleveland_browns_youth_trent_richardson_game_jersey-18n1p-zc.do?utm_source=google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_campaign=googleshopping&gclid=CjwKEAjww8eiBRCE7qvK9Z7W_DgSJABfOjf2YQl48QSPI9vsb7zJrOZsqAr6AhMJL0Mq1aIS4ktldxoCfMnw_wcB
I support the Phil Dawson buy! Do it.
Also, you know Modell’s was actually from the hated one’s family right? I think it was his grandfather or great grandfather who founded it. It’s a pretty big chain. So yes. Not. A. Penny.
I knew not but am glad you educated me. Not a cent and I’m removing the link above just in case.
I don’t think it is the Shanahans. Look what happened to RG3 and the dislocated foot play this year. My point is at times, while RG3 seems super athletic, he doesn’t seem to stay healthy. Hoyer’s ACL tear he was at least hit by Kiko Alonzo, and it looked ugly on Hoyer (the hit.) RG3 looked ugly because we all saw his foot dislocate, but it wasn’t like he was getting sandwiched between a player and the ground, or even his ankle wasn’t sandwiched.
I know football is a rough game, and it is easy for this accountant and saxophonist for a living to say it when I don’t take any physical beating on my jobs (though maybe a little on the stage, but that is just dancing caucasian style…). I would get clobbered out on the field, but for professional NFL players, I think we will see an injury riddled career from RG3. Got nothing against the guy, and I hope I am wrong. He is kind of a more (much more) athletic culpepper, and once injured, well, the career just doesn’t recorver.
I think Washington has a better chance of winning with McCoy. (On that note, I am fine Weeden, Anderson, Quinn, Frye, etc left. I always felt McCoy needed a couple years to get it together. He can run a bit too, but I understand, he got plastered by a Stooler on TNF)
And kudos to the comment above on a Stooler taking a cheapshot for 15 yards and a fine, may indeed happen to Manziel…
It reminds me of “The Running Man,” when they bring Captain Freedom out of retirement to finish off Richards and the gang, but he just ends up getting his ass kicked instead.
Here’s hoping Johnny is our Richards. (And Goodell makes a good Killian)
