October 20, 2014Week 8 of college and high school football in Ohio is in the books. In college, Ohio State’s offense continued its roll with a dominating win over Rutgers. The MAC is getting tighter and tighter this week with losses by Bowling Green and Akron. The OAC elite of John Carroll and Mount Union are both still perfect after victories this week. In high school, the biggest win came from St. Ignatius when they beat highly ranked Archbishop Moeller on Saturday. This week set up the big showdown on Thursday between Mentor and Hudson. It was a fun week of football and one that had a lot of important results.
So let’s take a look at Week 8’s installment of the Ohio College and High School Football Roundup!
College Football
Ohio State cruises past Rutgers 56-17
The Buckeyes continued their offensive roll with another blowout win this week. The Bucks offense had everything rolling, especially quarterback JT Barrett. Barrett threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns. Two of his passing touchdowns were caught by tight end Nick Vannett. Bucks running back Ezekiel Elliot added 69 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Buckeye offense put up 585 total yards on the day. Ohio State moves to 5-1 on the season and may have put themselves back into the playoff discussion.

Cincinnati routs SMU 41-3
The Bearcats got back on the winning side with this win over SMU. Cincinnati quarterback Gunner Kiel threw for 241 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for an additional 50 yards. The Bearcats had three rushes over 47 yards and two of them, Jarred Evans and Rodriguez Moore, scored a touchdown. Cincinnati moved to 3-3 on the season.

Ohio slips past Akron 23-20
Ohio won a tough game against Akron to move into striking distance of first place in the MAC East division at 4-4 on the season. Akron lost its first game in the MAC and are now 4-3 on the season. Ohio was led by quarterback JD Sprague, who threw for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, while also rushing for 68 yards. Akron quarterback Tommy Woodson threw for 268 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, while also rushing for 44 yards.

Ohio @ Western Michigan (Sat. 2pm)
Bowling Green falls to Western Michigan 26-14
The Falcons lost their first game in the MAC to Western Michigan. Western Michigan had a good performance from running back Jarvion Franklin, who rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown. The Broncos quarterback threw for 166 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 39 yards. The Falcons are 5-3 on the season.

Kent State beats Army 39-17
The Golden Flashes won their first game of the season and are now 1-6. Kent State dual threat quarterback Colin Reardon threw for 360 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception, while also rushing for 42 yards and a touchdown. Receiver James Brooks caught seven of Reardon’s passes for 108 yards and tight end Casey Pierce caught two of his three touchdown passes.

Notre Dame College slips past Shepherd (WV) 35-34
Notre Dame got back on the winning side with a close win over Shepherd (WV). Notre Dame and former Willoughby South quarterback Ray Russ threw for 459 yards and five touchdowns in a great performance versus Shepherd. His main target was Mitchel Shegos, who caught 11 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Notre Dame moves to 5-2.

Malone loses to Walsh 35-13
Malone lost another game and is now 1-6 on the season. Walsh had four rushers exceed 40 yards on the ground in the win. Kalvin Gordon rushed for 78 yards and a touchdown, Justin Keith rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown, and Aaron Male rushed for 82 yards. Ronnie Beers rushed for 83 yards and scored Malone’s only touchdown on the day.

Youngstown State beats Southern Illinois 26-14
Youngstown State got back on the winning track with this win over Southern Illinois. The Penguins were led by their rushing game in this victory. Running back Martin Ruiz rushed for 109 yards, while running back Jody Webb rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns. Youngstown State moved to 5-2 on the season.

Dayton cruises past Morehead State 41-7
The Flyers won again this week and are now 5-1 on the season. Dayton got an amazing performance from their running back Connor Kacsor. Kacsor rushed for 232 yards and four touchdowns on just 10 carries. Three other rushers gained over 60 yards on the day, including Jack Adams and Kyle Sess, who both scored a rushing touchdown in the victory.

Baldwin Wallace rolls over Wilmington (OH) 56-17
The Yellow Jackets move to 4-2 on the year with this convincing win over Wilmington (OH). Baldwin Wallace quarterback Tyler Moeglin had another good game, throwing for 127 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 42 yards. His main target on the day was Kyle Dunne, who caught six receptions for 91 yards and all three of Moeglin’s touchdown passes. Jarrod Smith added two touchdowns on the ground in the win.

John Carroll dominates Marietta 80-0
John Carroll completely blew out Marietta this week and moved to a perfect 6-0. John Carroll had three players throw at least one touchdown, including former St. Ignatius quarter Mark Myers throwing for three touchdowns and 185 yards. Former Glenville receiver Aramis Greenwood caught five passes for 71 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Tommy Michals rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns.

Mount Union takes down Heidelberg 58-17
Mount Union remained a perfect 6-0 on the season with this win over Heidelberg. Mount Union and former St. Edward dual threat quarterback Kevin Burke threw for 295 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Purple Raider running back Bradley Mitchell rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns. Mount Union had two receivers, Roman Namdar and Taurice Scott, with over 100 yards receiving and a touchdown catch.

High School Football
Hudson rolls over Strongsville 41-7
Hudson continued their unbeaten season with this win over Strongsville. The Explorers were led by running back Joe Charpentier, who rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns on the day. Hudson quarterback Mitch Guadagni threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 69 yards. His main receiver was Reid Robinson, who caught both of Guadagni’s touchdown passes. Hudson is 8-0, while Strongsville falls to 6-2 on the season.

Mentor cruises past Solon 42-16
Mentor moved to 8-0 on the season with this convincing win over Solon. Mentor playmaker Eddie Daugherty rushed for 107 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Mentor was led by their stout defense in this game. The Cardinals’ defense had good performances from Bradie Crandall, who had 1.5 sacks, and Billy Hudson, who had a blocked field goal and 1.5 sacks. Solon falls to 5-3 on the season with this loss.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary crushes Warrensville Heights 49-16
Saint Vincent-Saint Mary won again this week, moving to 6-2 on the season. The Irish quarterback threw for 78 yards and three touchdowns on the game. The Irish put the game away early, leading 42-0 at halftime.

St. Edward cruises past Eastern Christian Academy 35-6
The Eagles took care of business this week versus Eastern Christian Academy. St. Edward was led by running back Cole Gest, who rushed for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Eagles quarterback Brett Kean threw for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Corner Shaun Crawford had two interceptions for the Eagles. St. Edward moves to 6-2 on the season.

Glenville beats John Adams 25-8
Glenville continued their run through the Cleveland Senate League with this win over John Adams. Trevon Story, who rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns, led the Tarblooders on offense. Glenville had a touch match versus John Adams, even trailing after the first quarter 8-6. Glenville moves to 6-2 on the season.

St. Ignatius beats Archbishop Moeller 34-20
St. Ignatius had a big win this week in beating Archbishop Moeller. The Wildcats won the game through their defense and special teams. The star of the defense was OSU commit Dre’Mont Jones. Jones forced a fumble that he took all the way for a touchdown and had six tackles, one sack, and one tackle for a loss. The special teams blocked a punt and Michael Mathews recovered it and ran it in for a touchdown. On offense, running back Luke Russell rushed for 127 yards on the day. The Wildcats move to 6-2 on the season.

Avon outscores Rocky River 63-35
Avon had another shootout this week in their win over Rocky River. Avon quarterback Jake Sopko had an amazing game, throwing for 338 yards and five touchdowns. The Eagles had trouble defending against Pirates quarterback Matt Lowry, who rushed for 158 yards and a touchdown and passed for 268 yards and four touchdowns. Avon moves to 7-1.

Benedictine beats Lake Catholic 29-15
Benedictine gained another victory this week when they beat Lake Catholic on Saturday. The Bengals were led by running back Dontez Rash, who rushed for 215 yards and two touchdowns. Jerome Baker rushed for 129 yards and a touchdown and recovered a fumble for another touchdown. The Bengals move to 7-1 on the year.

Bedford cruises past Barberton 35-14
Bedford remained unbeaten at 8-0 with this win over Barberton. Bearcats running back Chawntez Moss rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns on just seven carries. Bedford’s London Cloud also added two rushing touchdowns in the win over Barberton.

Nordonia rolls over Tallmadge 40-7
Nordonia rolled to another win this week and remains unbeaten at 8-0. Nordonia quarterback David Murray threw for 218 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 178 yards and a touchdown. Murray’s main target was Dylan Mabin, who caught four passes for 76 yards and two touchdowns.
