November 3, 2014Week 10 is in the books and a lot of big games are coming up in the next few weeks in Ohio. In high school football in Ohio, the regular season has ended and the teams are preparing for the playoffs next week. Hudson and St. Edward are entering the playoffs on a roll with Mentor ready for another playoff run. In college, Ohio State took care of business over Illinois this week. Most of the MAC was off this week, so the schedule of games was not as full as usual. The OAC is a two horse race between John Carroll and Mount Union, paving the way for the final week’s big matchup. Football in Ohio is getting serious with teams’ seasons on the line.
So let’s take a look at Week 10’s installment of the Ohio College and High School Football Roundup!
College Football
Ohio State cruises past Illinois 55-14
Ohio State played a solid game on both sides of the ball in this dominating victory over Illinois. The Buckeyes outgained Illinois 545 total yards to 243 total yards. The Buckeyes played two quarterbacks in the game, JT Barrett and Cardale Jones. Barrett threw for 167 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 38 yards. Jones threw for 82 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 47 yards. Running back Curtis Samuel rushed for 63 yards and two touchdowns with running back Ezekiel Elliot adding 69 yards on the ground. The Bucks defense forced four turnovers in their win. Ohio State moved to 7-1 on the season.

Cincinnati beats Tulane 38-14
Cincinnati moved their record to 5-3 after beating Tulane on Friday. Bearcats quarterback Munchie Legaux replaced the injured Gunner Kiel and threw for 211 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. On the ground, Bearcats running back Rodriguez Moore rushed for 124 yards, while Mike Boone rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Notre Dame College cruises past West Virginia State 41-10
Notre Dame College moved to 6-3 on the season with this win over West Virginia State. Notre Dame College and former Willoughby South quarterback Ray Russ threw for 316 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions. Russ’s main target was Mitchel Shegos, who caught passes for 127 yards and one touchdown.

Malone falls to Urbana 35-16
Malone lost another game and moved to their record to 1-8 on the season. Urbana running back Cedric Presley rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown, while also catching four passes for 40 yards. Malone’s Kaleb Scott rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

Youngstown State beats South Dakota 28-17
Youngstown State won their third straight game and moved their record to 7-2 on the year. The Penguins were dominant on the ground behind Martin Ruiz and Jody Webb. Ruiz rushed for 185 yards and a touchdown, while Webb rushed for 128 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Hunter Wells threw for 244 yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

Dayton dominates Valparaiso 42-19
Dayton cruised past Valparaiso and moved their record to 6-2. Flyers running back Connor Kacsor rushed for 92 yards and two touchdowns. Dayton’s quarterback Will Bardo threw for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the win.

Baldwin Wallace cruises past Capital 48-14
The Yellow Jackets moved to 5-3 with this win over Capital. Baldwin Wallace quarterback Tyler Moeglin threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 40 yards and two touchdowns. Yellow Jackets running back Issac Reed rushed for 197 yards in the victory over Capital.

John Carroll rolls over Muskingum 62-14
John Carroll stayed perfect on the season at 8-0 with this win over Muskingum. John Carroll had a great performance from former St. Ignatius quarterback Mark Myers. Myers threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns in the win. His main targets were receivers Marshall Howell and Zach Strippy. Howell caught four passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Strippy caught six passes for 89 yards and two touchdowns.

Mount Union crushes Otterbein 66-7
Mount Union remained unbeaten with this dominating win over Otterbein. Purple Raider running back Bradley Mitchell rushed for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Mount Union quarterback Kevin Burke threw for 202 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 68 yards and one touchdown.

High School Football
Hudson cruises past Twinsburg 51-13
Hudson finished off their regular season with another win and enters the playoffs perfect at 10-0. The Explorers played two quarterbacks in the game, Mitch Guadagni and Kyle Ator. Guadagni threw for 98 yards and two touchdowns, while Ator threw for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Hudson’s defense held Twinsburg to just 22 rushing yards in the game.

Mentor sweeps past Strongsville 37-7
Mentor ended the regular season at 9-1 after beating Strongsville on Friday. Cardinals’ quarterback Jake Floriea threw for one touchdown and rushed for two touchdowns in the win. Floriea’s touchdown pass went to Eddie Daugherty, while Jason Blizzard and Jarrell Jackson each added a rushing touchdown.

Solon shut out by Brunswick 34-0
Solon lost in the final game of the season to Brunswick and ends the regular season at 6-4. Brunswick’s defense shut out the Solon offense, holding Solon to just 72 yards of offense in the first half. Quarterback Steven Ficyk, who threw for 150 yards and three touchdowns, led Brunswick. Brunswick running back Mike Bekeny rushed for 126 yards in the game. Brunswick ends its regular season at 7-3.

Saint Vincent-Saint Mary dominates Youngstown Ursuline 38-6
Saint Vincent-Saint Mary won their last regular season game and ended their regular season at 8-2. Irish’s Vince Lockett led the charge with over 100 yards of offense, two rushing touchdowns, and a receiving touchdown. Irish quarterback Dom Davis threw for 127 yards and a touchdown in the victory, while defensive back Markus Hurd added an interception for a touchdown for St. Vincent-St. Mary.

St. Edward beats St. Ignatius 41-10
St. Edward blew past St. Ignatius on Saturday and ended the regular season at 8-2. The Eagles were too much to handle for the Wildcats, especially the Eagles’ speedster Shaun Crawford. Crawford caught six receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns and added a touchdown on a kickoff return. Eagles running back Cole Gest rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns. St. Ignatius falls to 6-4 after this loss to their rival.

Glenville cruises past John Marshall 34-0
Glenville finishes the season at 8-2 after sweeping through the Cleveland Senate League. There were no stats available for this game.

Avon beats Bay 24-6
Avon finished the regular season with a win over Bay and moved to 9-1 on the season. Avon quarterback Jake Sopko connected on two touchdown passes to his tight end Chris Maxwell. The Eagles defense held Bay to just two field goals and forced two turnovers on the day.

Benedictine flies past Archbishop Hoban 35-7
Benedictine finished off their impressive regular season at 9-1 after beating Archbishop Hoban. Benedictine’s Dontez Rash dominated on both sides of the ball in the win. Rash rushed for 128 yards and a touchdown, while on defense he had five tackles, a fumble recovery, and an interception. The Bengals’ Justin Layne added a touchdown reception and a kickoff return touchdown.

Bedford rolls past Maple Heights 35-6
Bedford finished perfect on the season at 10-0 after beating Maple Heights. Bedford was led by their strong rushing attack of London Cloud and Chawntez Moss. Cloud rushed for 90 yards and three touchdowns, while Moss rushed for 123 yards and two touchdowns. The Bearcats defense held Maple Heights to just one touchdown, while allowing just three completions and and forcing Maple Heights into two fumbles.

Nordonia dominates Wadsworth 41-7
Nordonia finished their regular season perfect at 10-0 after cruising past Wadsworth. Nordonia quarterback David Murray threw for 232 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown. Denzel Ward caught four passes for 114 yards and two touchdowns for Nordonia.
