Cleveland Browns vs. Buffalo Bills: Behind the Box Score
December 2, 2014My Sportsman of the Year: Anderson Varejao
December 2, 2014While Mike Pettine won’t declare a starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 14 must-win contest against the Indianapolis Colts, incumbent starter Brian Hoyer continues to believe in his abilities to lead the team despite his struggles over much of the last month.
“I don’t have any doubt in myself,” Hoyer said on Monday. “I never have throughout this entire process, going back to last year. I feel like we’re 7-5. We still have a chance to attain all of our goals. It’s still there in front of us.”
As Craig pointed out on Monday, the Browns may be 7-5 at this point, with plenty of game-winning drives anchored by Hoyer leading the way, but the overall win total has almost been in spite of his recent play.
Though the Browns’ record is the best it has been since the unicorn season of 2007, Hoyer is ranked 34th out of 39 eligible quarterbacks on ProFootballFocus, large in part to a 56.3 percent completion percentage (better than only Arizona’s Drew Stanton and New York’s Michael Vick) and an 11-to-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
“This just doesn’t happen by luck,” Hoyer continued. “It was hard-earned, and we’ve worked to get where we’re at. Like I said, we’re still in it. With those other teams losing yesterday, we get to play…We have four more games. Two of them are division games. You don’t get to 7-5 in the NFL just lucking into it. It’s been a lot of hard work, and I think I’ve proven that I’ve gotten us to this point. I feel like I can carry us through the next four games. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be ready to go.”
There is doubt, however, as to whether or not he’ll have the chance to execute on his words.

I say start him.
He’s earned the right to start, but not necessarily the right to play continuously despite his declining performance.
Give him the benefit of the doubt…and a short leash.
Man, the “remember the good times” bit. Dude is publicly campaigning to keep his job…he must feel like he’s losing grip on it. Hopefully he doesn’t resort to making Pettine a mix tape.
Hey Brian . . . shut up.

i believe he should have answered with “whatever coach wants, i’ll help us win no matter how”
Yes. It’s “football player speak,” but it’s usually the right course of action. I’m really losing confidence in Hoyer’s “great team player” image – but that’s probably not his fault (nor is the image his creation).

i agree completely. I have not liked that about Hoyer all year. I feel he has been a selfish player when it comes to his playing time vs. what’s best for the team. I understand that he is playing for a contract but he’s just not that good.
Hoyer’s “gotten us to this point,” is akin to the captain of the Titanic saying the same thing while everyone is huddled in lifeboats. “Well, at least we are halfway to America – and it’s all due to me…I’ve gotten us to this point!”
nice analogy!
Meanwhile, the arrogant, selfish, attention-hound rookie has said nothing but the right things. Now, I hardly believe him (Football wants to play!), but at least he’s saying the right things – which indeed is being a good team player.
Perception, as they say, is reality.
I hate that phrase – as reality is reality and nothing else – but in this instance I grudgingly admit its relevance.
Indeed. That was a fine cruise! Until it wasn’t.
The running game and defense carried him quite a few games as well.
It is what it is.
I could care less.
Irregardless…
From one Brian to another
Well, with all due respect . . .
If it’s not one thing, it’s another…
(this reminds me of a scene from – in my opinion – one of the funniest movies around, national lampoon’s loaded weapon 1, where denis leary and william shatner are going back and forth with idioms)

Tautology at its worst. Totally devoid of any meaning or nutritional value. I hate that phrase with a passion!
Can’t believe I missed this. Damn this job.
