Connor Shaw to sign with Browns, likely start on Sunday

December 27, 2014Regardless of how disappointing Johnny Manziel has been this season – and it was pretty disappointing – any talk of giving up on Manziel is wholly premature. I said as much this week on Les Levine’s show with Dennis Manoloff. I know Manziel looks horrible and he isn’t “fast” in the way Robert Griffin might be, but I still see an athletic kid who can use his quickness to elude the rush and an arm that’s capable of keeping defensive secondaries honest. I still see a kid with supreme confidence in himself and an utter lack of fear, even in the face of failure.
The questions are still many in terms of his willingness to prepare and practice in a way to make him a successful NFL pro, but better that than not having ability. One can learn to practice, but one can not learn to have talent. It’s good to know Kyle Shanahan isn’t giving up just yet either.
On Manziel saying seven quarters is too early to give up on a QB and if he agrees with that:
“Yeah, definitely. Sometimes, a year can be too early to give up on a quarterback. Sometimes, quarterbacks have struggled for a few years, then they’ve come out and picked it up in the second half of their career. I don’t think of it really in terms of absolutes in anything. I look at every situation. We’ve got seven quarters to evaluate him off game tape, and I’ve got a whole year of working with him through practice and training camp to evaluate him off of. I’ve got a lot more in my mind with dealing with Johnny than just those seven quarters. I think it’ll help us going into the offseason where he needs to improve, and more importantly, him knowing. You can talk all you want and tell him, he can believe it and stuff, but when you get that experience and you get thrown into the fire, then you really understand. It kind of helps you going into the offseason with the urgency and really truly knowing what you’ve got to improve at.”On if he would go to bat for Manziel if General Manager Ray Farmer came to him and asked if the Browns can win with Manziel:
“Yeah, I think every person on our team gives us a chance to win. There’s no doubt at every single position, especially with rookies, Johnny’s got to get better. I’ve got to get him a lot better. I think every player on our team needs to get better, and so do we as a coaching staff. Hopefully we can finish 8-8 this year, but right now we’re 7-8. You’re either always getting better or worse. Until we can be that one team that’s happy at the end of the year, that one team that wins the Super Bowl, us coaches are definitely always going to be frustrated trying to improve everyone.”
I’m especially interested in Kyle Shanahan’s take on this because he was a young, brash coach with question marks surrounding him on his way into Cleveland. He was rumored to be immature and cliqueish in Washington while also taking advantage of being the head coach’s son. So Shanahan likely can identify somewhat with the realizations that a younger man gets after a humbling experience.
I still question whether there’s enough time for Manziel to be ready to be the Browns’ starter next season, but I’m a long ways away from giving up on him as the Browns’ eventual star quarterback. If you believe what Shanahan said, then I’m not alone.

Sorry, I hear nothing in this that gives me confidence in Manzel. Lots of “coach speak” and “double talk” … can we win with Johnny, “why of course we can win with every player on our team.” Not that I expected him to be gushing over Johnny’s play.
And he didnt show up to practice and josh gordon either. They went out together. So now hes making others worse. Cut this piece of sh#t now. Both of them.
Shanahan is looking to bail from the Browns.
Johnny Manziel was not eligible to be at that walk-through practice. Players on IR may not participate in practices (it’s what NE got in trouble for a few years back). He was late to his rehab session and fined.
I doubt that. But, who would take him after last year’s Redskin season and the final 5+ games of offense here? Kyle Shanahan will be back. He had positives and negatives about his playcalling, but hopefully, next year we see the same offense with each QB (though called to their particular strengths).
I don’t give a crap. He was out with Gordon. He’s bringing others down. If he wants to succeed he will be at every opportunity he gets. As far as im concerned hes not the starter next year. His career hour glass is losing sand fast.
On time. 15 minutes early. He shows up to game Sundays at 11. Never EVER has there been a successful qb that followed his path. Hes already said hes not changing. One year wasted. Like a candle in the wind………
He said the same exact words for Connor Shaw. Talking heads…….
pre-determination doesn’t help anyone. we cannot do anything about it other than hope that he grows up and that the coaches hold him accountable to help in that process. it looks like we have the 2nd part, now we need the 1st part. we’ll see.
Hes claimed hes not changing his partying. Less than a week back he vowed seriousness. Hes a great talker. Im about actions. His trade value is highest now if we can get a 3rd now im taking it. Believe me im a huge Browns fan. His success in this league is not in the works. Watch his films. 90 percent of his plays in college are injuries or failures in the NFL. GO Browns
I get that you want what is best for the Browns and understand the Manziel fears. But, he will be on the team next year, so all we can do is hope he grows up.
Can anyone confirm that the Browns had to send security to Johnny’s apartment to drag him to rehab? Rumor has it he was not answering texts or phone calls and they thought he might be dead…
Its already been confirmed by local Browns media. Manziel is on a downward spral.
