The good, the bad, and the ugly of the defense: Cleveland Browns Film Room
December 24, 2014WFNY Q&A: Norris Cole talks about Cleveland, LeBron and Life
December 24, 2014Cleveland Cavaliers center Anderson Varejao underwent an MRI on Wednesday, and received a terrible Christmas gift in the way of a torn Achilles tendon, as reported by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst. The injury “likely will end Varejao’s season.”
Though non-contact, the Brazilian big man landed awkwardly in the third quarter of Tuesday’s 125-104 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. He left the floor without being able to put weight on the leg and was later seen on crutches.
It’s believed the Cavs will intensify their on-going endeavor to trade for a rim-protecting big man. The team has been seeking depth for its front line going back to the summer, having specifically targeted Timofey Mozgov of the Denver Nuggets and Kosta Koufos of the Memphis Grizzlies. Additional reports have added both Lopez brothers—Portland’s Robin and Brooklyn’s Brook—into the mix.
ESPN also reports that the Cavs, in recent days, have been in contact with the Boston Celtics about working as a facilitator in three-team trade scenarios.
The Cavs signed Varejao, who has missed 166 games with various injuries over the past four seasons, to a three-year, $30 million extension in October. Under NBA rules, if the injury is deemed by an independent NBA physician to be season ending, the team could—through an application process—receive half of his 2014-15 salary for a replacement player, either through a trade or free-agent signing. It can only be used in a trade for a player in the final year of his contract or in a one-year offer to a free agent.

Last one (and despite the fun nature of gifs, I am actually truly very upset about this)

Someone get me a gif of Dion Waiters waving goodbye.
Why do I feel like the Cavs are going to be paying Deron Williams’s albatross of a salary for the next few years?
Deron Williams? I’d have taken Brook Lopez before last night now I’ll take him even more and just hope he can stay on the court. No idea why Griffin didn’t give Thompson the deal he gave Varejao that will prove to be a huge mistake.
Yep it’s officially basketball season in Cleveland now. Get on that phone Griff STAT!
Couldn’t find a waving gif, but I found this.

Wait a minute….
I fully expect his expiring contract to be part of a package. In a perfect world Griffin uses Haywood, Waiters that Memphis first to add a big man say Brook Lopez. Lopez worries me though he’s far from a healthy player but when he does play his game is a perfect fit for the Cavs. If that deal can be done I beg, plead with Ray Allen and use the exception on him. Like I said: perfect world.
The Nets are begging someone to take D-Will’s deal. If they can find a way to fit it in I’m sure they’ll make the Cavs take him as part of a Lopez deal.
Living in Brooklyn and rooting for the Nets has been tough but the sight of Lopez on the bench makes it even tougher. The guy plays less than Varejao. Personally, I would pass on him.
Sad, but inevitable. And the Sun also rises
Ah well they can beg someone else I don’t see a role for him with the Cavs.
True that’s why I’m hesitant. The problem is there aren’t really any big men who make an impact available. Greg Monroe? I like him but he’d be a rental. Would it be worth trading Waiters? Koufos would have been a nice addition or even Mozgov but that was with Varejao still playing.
I hope not. Maybe the big kid from New Mexico will blossom. Last year Delly did. This breaks my heart in so many ways. I actually feel for Andy because he does not deserve this, and the Cavs don’t deserve D Will’s salary either. Don’t give up on Dion. We have come along way with him; it would be a shame for some other team to reap the benefits. Besides he has Delly to be his pet goat. He seems to keep Dion on the straight and narrow. We may have to win with the bigs we have. No use wasting talent on a rental.
