December 26, 2014Undrafted rookie quarterback Connor Shaw reportedly agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns on Friday and likely will start Sunday’s season finale in Baltimore. Reports indicate the contract will be a multi-year deal.
Shaw, 23, played collegiately at the University of South Carolina. He appeared in the Aug. 18 preseason game for the Browns against the Washington football team. He had been on the team’s practice squad and is expected to sign officially soon.
Various reports emerged on Friday about Brian Hoyer still not practicing and Shaw’s likely rise to the starting quarterback spot. He’ll be the 22nd quarterback to start for the Browns since 1999.

“This is a dream come true if I’m able to start and able to play,” Shaw told the Akron Beacon Journal’s Nate Ulrich earlier this week. “I’m excited about it.”
Rookie quarterback Johnny Manziel, who became the 21st starter since 1999 in week 15 this season, was placed on injured resrve earlier this week with his noted hamstring injury. Hoyer, who injured his shoulder and biceps at the end of Sunday’s week 16 loss against Carolina after replacing the injured Manziel, has not thrown all week.
As of Thursday, the Ravens-Browns game was listed as OFF on the gambling boards, likely because of the quarterback uncertainty for the Browns. Mike Pettine’s squad has lost four straight since a 7-4 start. Injuries have decimated the roster, but the offense’s demise has been particularly dramatic. The team has not reached the 250-yard mark in three straight games.

Great!
Now, I compare this to the classic bear in the woods joke…
A bear jumps out of a bush and starts chasing two hikers. They both start running for their lives, but then one of them stops to put on his running shoes.
His friends says, “What are you doing? You can’t outrun a bear!”
His friend replies, “I don’t have to outrun the bear; I only have to outrun you!”
Connor doesn’t have to beat the Ravens. He just needs to play better than JFF. 😉
Go get ’em kid!
So, hypothetical talk-radio fodder time:
The Ravens are playing for their playoff lives, no? They are going to come out scrapping.
What happens if Shaw comes out blazing, puts up 300+ in the air and throws for 3 TDs? I mean, they are giving him some cash today. He’s going to be on the roster next year or they will pay him not to be. He was the best looking QB in the pre-season (which that and 89 cents gets you a cup of coffee at Circle K). Is there ANY chance he puts himself in the conversation (inside the walls of Berea where it matters) to start next year?
(Assuming they don’t blow this up and highly draft a guy…)
I could very well envision a scenario where all 3 QBs are (really truly legitimately) given a shot to win the job. Likely Hoyer will be gone, and so it’ll probably be between Shaw and Johnny.
If there’s anything Pettine has shown, it’s that meritocracy rules (see Crowell over Ben Tate, see Williams over Justin Gilbert, Hoyer over Johnny). If Shaw shows something, he’ll definitely be in the conversation.
You lost me at “the Washington football team.” Contrary to popular belief, your throat will not close and you will not burst into flames if you say that word.
No wonder the Browns suck. They had a chance at an experienced QB but they passed on Tim Tebow. Don’t like him? He would be better than an untested rookie with zero NFL qualifications.
Conner outplayed both other QBs in the preseason game. The Browns don’t care about winning. They just want a big name like JM to make money on.
The Washington “football team”? They are still the Washington Redskins so show some balls in your columns man! Show some respect toward one of the oldest and most storied franchises in the NFL Jacob! Don’t fall for the propoganda from the left wing PC Police! Your not breaking any rules or laws by saying Washington Redskins! Now that being said, I hope Connor Shaw plays great tomorrow!
I hope he does. It was good to hear JoeT say that he understood the offense. Not as good to hear coach Pettine say that we might need to win this game 3-2.
First, the contract is non-guaranteed. So, they could always cut him or throw him back on the PS next year. However, I do believe the plan was to have him ready to be the QB2 next season.
And, I think Coach Pettine has shown he’s willing to play whoever he thinks gives him the best chance to win regardless of what anyone else thinks. He stayed with Hoyer until Brian forced him to try someone else because he believed in him (or not in Johnny, your pick there). He put K’Waun over Justin at CB. He buried Tate and Farmer went ahead and cut him. We appear to finally have a coach willing to do what he says in terms of the best players playing.
Tim Tebow looked great announcing the Frozen Disney Parade. That is his profession now, let him do what he does.
In other words, Let it Go…[sorry for ruining your day ;)]
I think Tebow is more Olaf than Elsa.
Good one!
Manziel is looking like a bust. Don’t know if he’ll beat out Ryan Leaf?
