TD talks Tribe off-season and Browns quarterbacks – WFNY Podcast – 2014-12-18
December 18, 2014JT and Cardale to the Rescue — WFNY’s Top 10 Cleveland Sports Stories of 2014: No. 7
December 18, 2014The Holiday Season is upon us, and for many, the holidays are a time of rituals and traditions. Here at Waiting For Next Year, we believe in tradition as well, and one of our personal favorites is the annual WFNY 12 Days of Christmas contest series! This is now the seventh year in a row we have done this contest, as hard as that is to believe.
How does it work? It’s simple. Every week day from now through Christmas, we will have a different contest with a different prize package to give away to you guys. It’s our small way of showing our appreciation and saying thanks for hanging in there with us for another year. Each day will feature a different, unique contest. Some will require getting a correct answer, some will be selected randomly among all entries, and some will feature haiku writing, of course. So check back every day for your chance to win one of our prize packs!
Previous Day’s Winner
Ok, so, maybe we’re done with the Cavaliers guessing games. The first time we did it, nobody picked the right answer. This time, the Cavaliers went out and laid an egg and made this contest a lot less fun than it was supposed to be.
Anyway, two people picked the Hawks to win. One of them picked the Cavs to score 97 points, and the other picked the Cavs to score 98 points. Which is pretty amazing when you consider that the Cavaliers actually did score 98 points. You can’t get any closes than that. Anyway, congrats to Anomander for correctly guessing that the Hawks would win as well as getting the Cavaliers’ point total exactly correct.
Today’s Prize Pack
For Day Nine, it’s time to wreck this contest together! We have a Johnny Manziel “Wreck this League” T-Shirt from the fine people over at Tarnation! Sports. And as always, we also have a Two Bucks gift card for the winner of today’s contest. If you win this prize package you can wreck your hunger together with your gift card while wearing your Wreck This League shirt!
Today’s Contest
Since we’re talking about Mr Wreck This League, how about a contest question based around the Cleveland Browns QB situation? Today’s question is: Assuming Manziel more or less plays about the same as what we saw in his first game, what would you do about the QB situation next season if you were the GM of the Browns?
The winner of this contest will be selected at random among all legit entries received before midnight on Thursday, December 18, 2014. To enter, simply leave a comment in the Comments section below ((and as always, please be aware of our Before You Comment guidelines and technical information)) with your answer to the question. For example, if I were entering the contest, I would say: “I’m warming up to the idea of using every draft pick on a QB until the Browns finally find one who can actually play and make the team better. They can keep Manziel, just draft as many QBs as possible and may the best man win”. See? It’s that easy. So what are you waiting for? Go get your answers in below, and good luck!
The Fine Print (in normal sized font) and Rules
Only one entry per person per day is allowed. This is very important. Anyone who submits more than one entry is immediately disqualified. Only one winner per household per year is allowed. Winners will be notified via email. Prizes will not necessarily be delivered by Christmas, but we will try our best to make it happen.

I would trade Johnny to the R&#skins for 3 first round picks. I would then use all five of our picks to draft Marcus Mariota. I would then bench Mariota and make him watch Hoyer all season (after paying Hoyer his Andy Dalton money).
Roll with Shaw!

If he plays exactly the way he played vs Cincinnati, then I would hope that someone would possibly give us a 5th or 6th round for him. Even Weeden showed *some* improvement. If he does improve reasonably, I’m fine rolling the dice with him for another year. I mean, we do it every time anyways.
Keep building a team around him. Replacing him after 3 games puts the next QB in the exact same situation. Let’s get the rest of the team square and see what he can do. We arent in a position to draft the big 2 this year and the FA class is arguably headlined by Brian Hoyer. See what the available QB’s look like draft/FA time for the 2016 season if he lays an egg next season.
TEEEEEEBOOOOOWWWWW!

If Manziel plays the same, I would use a franchise tag to bring back Hoyer and use the 2015 draft picks to improve other areas of the team.
why not just pay some other FA QB w/o true starting credentials a few million and the promise to start if that is your plan? why would anyone pay Hoyer $20mil?
it’s an interesting scenario and one I hope doesn’t come into play. But, I do believe that I would roll with Manziel next season, sign a mid-FA guy to compete with him (Locker!!!), and give Shaw some rep’s. I don’t think there’s a QB worthwhile where we will be picking this year, but that will depend on who comes out early and which guys jump up the board.
You showed incredible restraint. At least you didn’t go Mountain on his head.
I would sign Hoyer to a three year option/incentive-heavy deal, cut Manziel, and start drafting new guys.

Johnny has to have more of a shot than the last 3 games of the season against teams which are all still in in the playoff hunt able to win their respective divisions. I think the plays will change a little with Johnny, and it takes some time to gel. I would think no matter what he is the guy next year (unless we get Mariota on the cheap). I don’t see us trading for Cutler. Gotta give him more than 3 games.
BRING IT!!!!

Assuming Manziel more or less plays about the same as what we saw in his first game, what would you do about the QB situation next season if you were the GM of the Browns?
Bring in a veteran QB to serve as a back up. Possibly draft a late round QB. Get the rest of the team healthy and on the same page, give him a full season and see what happens. If this team is any worse than 7 wins next year, let Johnny wreck the league elsewhere.
It pains me to say this, but unless Farmer gets a godfather offer (and why would he if Manziel continues to play like that), I think Manziel has to be the opening day starter next year, if for no other reason than an attempt at consistency. Absolutely draft AT LEAST one QB, but this team will never amount to anything if we can’t have the same QB span multiple seasons. If he continues to play as poorly as he did in game one throughout the season next year, then fine, pull the plug. But give him a chance to succeed with an offseason to prepare before closing the book on him, and hope that he actually wants to prove he’s as good as he thinks he is.
I would trade Manziel and draft a quarterback whose last name isn’t Winston. I would try to bring Hoyer back for a 2-3 year contract for a reasonable salary and let Hoyer start until the young quarterback is ready.
I would draft a rookie qb at pick #22
If Manziel played the same way as last week the next two games, I would call Braxton Miller and see what his thoughts are for next season
Johnny is the starter. Bring in some turd like Fitzpatrick or Jake Locker as backup.

If he plays the same… Trade Manziel for a 3rd and 4th to the Cowboys. See what the market is for Hoyer and if you can sign him for backup money. Look at packaging the two first rounders for mariotta hoping the raiders finish with the top pick.
I think he’ll be the starter next year though and we’ll bring in a couple of veteran backups to battle for that spot. Connor Shaw stays as an intriguing wild card option.
Back to the drawing board. Draft another qb and sign Hoyer or another FA to mentor him ne t year
You know what they say, 4th times a charm
you know what? we need more QBs to add to the list.
sign Locker, Bradford, and Mallett. after week1, trade whoever started for Jay Cutler (he’ll have worn out his welcome by then).
before week5, sign Tim Tebow (how has he NOT made the list yet).
sign all the cruddy Spartan QBs to start the next few games. Drew Stanton, come on down. Kirk Cousins, come on down.
I’ll go back to my old draft strategy…use all the picks on QBs (Unless SAMMY is available…but, I digress), one of them is bound to work out.
2014 could have been:
Manziel
Bridgewater
Carr
Logan Thomas
Tom Savage
Aaron Murray
Missing out on: Jimmy-G, AJ McCarron, Zach Mettenberger, David Fales, Keith Wenning, Tahj Boyd, and Garrett Gilbert
I’d wait to see how he does with Alex Mack at C and with a full offseason preparing as the starter, while continuing to build the rest of the team. I’d also trade a low pick for Jay Cutler to have as a backup. If Brian Hoyer could lead this year’s team to 7 wins…
I still give Jhonny the start next year. At this point we know that Hoyer is serviceable, but I don’t believe that he is good enough to lead us to the playoffs. Especially in this division. My opinion is that Manziel will figure it out if he is given the time. I just think he is too athletic and too driven to be such a complete bust. I think his floor is still higher than Hoyer’s ceiling.
I really hope Murray gets a shot.
Roll with Manziel going into next year and do exactly what Bernie and Tim have advised us to do: be patient. Let’s try to get some semblance of organizational stability and cohesion and build up the team around Johnny through the draft and free agency. Perhaps we place too much weight on the QB and if we build a stacked defense as well as bring in some offensive weapons we’ll finally achieve some success.
1.) Re-sign Jordan Cameron
2.) Trade him to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo
3.) ???
4.) [Edit: Win] Super Bowl
Oh, and try to trade Hoyer to the Cardinals right now because they might be juuuuussst desperate enough for a QB to make it worth our while.
I would definitely try to trade for RG3. His value can’t get any lower and the situation in Washington is toxic.
I think Manziel needs more than 3 games. I would like to see what he can do with a healthy offensive line. They also should find a veteran QB.

if only the NFL allowed late season trades
Rules: I keep forgetting that they’re a thing…
