January 21, 2015Video: Campaign to get LeBron James in the 2015 Slam Dunk Contest
January 21, 2015Tuesday evening, it was reported that the Browns were expected to interview Marty Mornhinweg for the team’s vacant offensive coordinator position, who previously worked for the New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles in the same position. That report was then refuted, and other reports surfaced that tied the Browns to St. Louis Rams quarterback coach Frank Cignetti and Oakland Raiders quarterback coach John DeFilippo.
Through the tea leaves the answer has surfaced: the Browns have in fact hired DeFilippo as their new offensive coordinator. While The OBR said a hiring was imminent, Alex Marvez first broke the news for FOX Sports; a report that Adam Schefter (and every local beat reporter) soon confirmed.
Source tells @NFLonFOX that @Browns are hiring John DeFilippo as new offensive coordinator.
— Alex Marvez (@alexmarvez) January 21, 2015
DeFilippo will replace the recently departed Kyle Shanahan, with whom the Browns split ways a few weeks ago over whispers of internal disagreements about the direction of the team and the offense. Although DeFilippo is mostly an unknown quantity to Browns fans at present, Browns fans may remember that the team interviewed him last year as well.
Admittedly, settling for a candidate that the Browns passed over last season is hardly encouraging. Surely more details about DeFilippo will emerge throughout the day, as will (hopefully) what the Browns found so attractive about DeFilippo. Browns fans undoubtedly will want to become familiar with the man they expect to play a prominent role in their football lives for at least the next 11.5 months or so. Hopefully DeFilippo’s background as a quarterbacks coach will help him draw out the inner All-Pro from the likes of Brian Hoyer and Johnny Manziel.

Hooray! Someone who would take the job! I knew there had to be one person!
We used the same photo for our respective articles! http://clesportstalk.net/browns-set-to-hire-raiders-defilippo/
Yay Google and the Associated Press!
Never been an OC? Never called plays before? Never worked with a successful QB? Coming from a losing team?
Sounds like a prefect fit for the Browns…
Pfffft – look at that pic. If you’re that judgie with Pryor and Leinart, good luck with Johnny, pal.
And where’s all the “Mouthbreathers for Bernie” today? I’m ashamed of youse, it seems you’ve given up.
Sounds like it’s time to…… RABBBLE!
RABBLE RABBLE! OAKLAND! WHO? RABBLE! QB COACH!!! RABBLE RABBLE!!!
I like that we got a young guy who is used to working with many, many different types of rookie/young QBs (Eli Manning, JaMarcus Russell, Mark Sanchez, Terrell Pryor, Derek Carr).
Hit or miss on those guys development, but he should at least know what is needed in terms of preparation there.
And, I am thankful we didn’t hire an old retread. We need to have fresh ideas on offense.
Then again, he could be completely in over his head. No way to know for certain, so I’ll err on the side of optimism for the Youngstown native.
Well, “Jimmy”, you have the power to override Pettine’s latest hire. So how come you haven’t done so yet?
we have not hired a QB coach yet. just saying.

and, what I am saying is that we should absolutely NOT hire Bernie to be our QB coach 🙂
He needs to check with the nearest homeless guy first.
Don’t be surprised if Defilippo also gets the nod for QB coach as well as OC.
Former QB at James Madison University. Go Dukes!! (my wife went there).
I do hear that he’s a very intelligent and personable guy, so there’s that. I have no idea if he can do the job, so we’ll have to wait and see. I speculate that Mike Pettine may be a lot more involved on the offensive side of the ball now because he made it seem like he was interested in that last year.
and after the Raiders, Berea may seem dang functional.
#glasshalffull
it’s a good thing that he’s worked with Pettine before then as they should know if they can work together.

Raiders may hire Pat Shurmur and Eric Mangini (no, seriously) to be their co-ordinators, so I’ll take that trade anyday 🙂
I like it. I think coordinators should be new to the role, not some guy who developed a system 10-20 years ago and carries it around with him like an albatross. Hopefully he’s got some fresh ideas and schemes.
TL:DR; LET’S WRECK THIS LEAGUE!!
So John DeFilippo, inquiring minds want to know:
Your passing system?
Your running system?
Run first?
Pass first?
How are you going to shape up Johnny Football? Connor Shaw? Brian Hoyer? (maybe)
Were you planning on staying with the Browns for more than a year?
Favorite Transformer?
Do you like sandwiches?
Do you like to eat sandwiches with BenRM?
I’M A SANDWICH. Wanna eat me? (My body is ready.)
Do you like Ray Farmer?
Do you like Jimmy Haslam?
Would you be willing to eat sandwiches with Ray, Jimmy, and Ben in the same room?
Will you have any say on the offensive makeup of the team?
(Too drunk to think of any other questions. Anyone else want to add to this discussion?)
It’s not mentioned in the article that DeFilippo worked with Pettine before @ the Jets. This is an OC that Pettine knows and knows he can work with. I thought this was the hire everyone expected from the start?
who?
An old article from last year, but it may shed some light on what we can expect from Defilippo. (for those who don’t know.)

If that’s true good for Pettine. I hate when the FO isolates a HC with divide and conquer hirings of assistants, setting up a potential successor before the coach can establish it as his team. Like what Dan Gilbert has done to David Blatt.
They are just trying to suck enough to move the team to LA.

I would have taken it.
Agree that the younger more energetic guy is a better hire than the old, recycled OC. We have to trust Pettine to make the right call here. Let’s hope they share the same offensive philosophy.

Autobot or Decepticon?
What does Red Right 88 mean to you?
Glad to see this OC search mirror the process from last year’s HC search. /notactuallyglad
masochist
agree on the “old retread” comment. Yesterday I saw on the ticker that Chan Gailey was hired as an OC and my first thought was “oh god, don’t let that be us…”

Are Browns fans the greatest in the world, or the Universe?
Agree with the thought, but somewhat disagree with the comparison.
Had Dan hired Blatt and let him bring his whole Euro-staff over with him we’d been in an uproar and rightfully so.
David needed NBA guidance not only for the differences in game but also the liason with players.
3-4 or 4-3?
…. no wait, sorry… so used to asking that question this time of year.
SO IS HE BRINGING CARR WITH HIM OR WHAT?
he may have opted for the George Kokinis special.
Younger & energetic is great as long as people are patient and realize mistakes will be made. Browns fans are pretty patient these days, right?
Personally, I like the hire – I hope he can keep the ZBS.
[had a reply but editors dinged it. Probably bc I used the b word. My bad.]
Go Dukes?

DeFilippo, eh? Good man? Intelligent?
