The 2015 NBA All-Star game starters have been unveiled, and the Cavaliers’ LeBron James is in the East’s first five once again. His most noteworthy teammates, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, did not make the cut. This will mark LeBron’s 11th appearance in the All-Star Game. Love and Irving could still be selected as reserves, though neither is a lock.
James received 1,470,483 votes, the most of any Eastern Conference player, but second overall behind Golden State guard Stephen Curry. Irving finished fourth among Eastern backcourt players with 535,873 votes, trailing John Wall, Kyle Lowry, and Dwyane Wade. Kevin Love finished sixth among Eastern frontcourt players with 386,208 votes.
Two backcourt players (i.e. guards) are voted in along with three frontcourt players (i.e. forwards or centers). Voting is no longer categorized by specific positions like point guard and power forward. Thus, two point guards form the starting backcourt for the East, while two power forwards and a center will start in the frontcourt for the West.

Irving’s non-selection is significant because of how it affects his salary next season. He did not sign a full max deal, but rather a sort of mini-max that would have seen his 2015-16 salary go up if he were voted an All-Star starter (or if he wins MVP) this season. Had he reached one of those benchmarks, he would have earned 27.5 percent of the team’s salary cap. Instead, he will earn 25 percent. Exactly how much he will make will be determined by next year’s salary cap.
