January 12, 2015According to Joe Schad from ESPN, Ohio State is set to add Tim Beck to their offensive coaching staff after the College Football Playoff National Championship Monday night.
The former Nebraska offensive coordinator would replace offensive coordinator Tom Herman, who will become Houston’s head coach after Monday night. Beck was not retained by the Cornhuskers after the firing of head coach Bo Pelini.
Beck will likely be named the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Offensive line coach Ed Warinner will likely be bumped to the primary offensive coordinator and will take over the play-calling duties.

Graduating from Cardinal Mooney high school in Youngstown, Tim Beck has Ohio ties. Meyer stated that the Buckeyes needed to hire someone to replace Herman that can recruit in Texas. Beck has Texas ties – he coached at Mansfield Summit High School in Arlington Texas and recruited Texas while at Nebraska. The connection also makes sense because Warinner and Beck coached together at Kansas in 2007, where Beck coached the wide receivers and Warinner was the offensive coordinator.
While with Nebraska, Beck was the running backs coach from 2008-10 and moved to the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator starting in 2010. Nebraska had the top ranked total offense in the Big Ten and second best scoring offensive behind only Ohio State. Beck worked a run-first version of the spread offense where his quarterbacks were not asked to be great passers. He will have a new challenge with the Buckeyes and will hopefully be able to continue what Herman and company started.
Beck will certainly have big shoes to fill since he is replacing Herman. Herman was not only one of the best offensive coordinators in the country while at Ohio State, but he did a great job developing quarterbacks, as seen this season.

yes, he pretty much ran the Urban Meyer circa Utah/Florida offense
where his quarterbacks were not asked to be great passers
well, he was getting the slim pickings left over from Texas after all those schools grabbed the best QBs. I definitely agree that it’ll be a new challenge to incorporate the passing, but I think it should be something within grasp due to the skill level of the guys involved.
on the surface, this seems like a homerun hire. I was actually expecting a school to offer Beck the head spot due to his successes and his ties to Texas. glad he’ll be a Buckeye.
