Are these really just the “same old Browns?” – WFNY Roundtable
January 9, 2015Video: Ohio State’s National Championship Trailer is incredible
January 9, 2015Vic Carucci spent a lot of time with the Browns until he decided to head back to Buffalo. He was in and around the team as much as anyone over the past few years. Carucci joined Baskin and Phelps on 92.3 the Fan to talk about the Browns’ current situation now that they’re searching for a new quarterback coach and offensive coordinator.
Carucci talked about what the Browns might do in terms of finding a new offensive coordinator. Obviously one of those options is to hire a guy that the Browns think can maximize Johnny Manziel and really go all-in on trying to make Johnny the best he can be. But Vic Carucci said something else that I found really interesting and I’m just paraphrasing because the quotes come off extra converstional. Carucci said that he doesn’t think, based on his knowledge of Jimmy Haslam that “will blink twice, or even blink once” at the idea of finding another quarterback. Carucci specifically mentioned the draft picks that the Browns possess in the first round as well.
So take that for what it is. Carucci isn’t claiming to know what the Browns will do, but I think it’s important to note that the owner of the Browns is committed to the position of quarterback more than he will allow himself to be committed to one individual guy. I don’t find it to be “earth-shattering” information, mind you, but I think it’s important.
Johnny Manziel didn’t show us anything on or off the field that makes you think he’s someone worth betting heavily on next season. That doesn’t mean the Browns need to run him out of town now and bet the farm on Marcus Mariota, but it also means that maybe they would consider it even though they did use a pretty high pick on Manziel. The only thing worse than wasting a high pick on a draft pick is continuing to try and force it at the game’s most important position without ample evidence that they’re capable of producing for you in that spot.

“I’m not going to change who I am for anybody.”… About the only time Johnny was honest with anyone.
