The merits of technology, Derrick Rose’s memorial, and trading Kevin Durant, While We’re Waiting

March 10, 2015When one of the best cornerbacks in the league effectively signs a series of one-year deals that bet on himself in exchange for future flexibility, he’s bound to be linked to several teams every March. Alas, thus is the case once again with Darrelle Revis coming off of a ring-winning season with the New England Patriots as Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot reports that the Cleveland Browns have expressed interest in the Pro Bowl defensive back just hours after his option was declined by the NFL Champions.
#Browns have expressed interest in CB Darrelle Revis, who played for Mike Pettine in NY, league source tells http://t.co/o11vJSOExu

The Browns were linked to Revis in trade talks a season ago as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were looking to offload his $16 million, a deal that ultimately landed the ball hawk in New England with the Patriots. Revis, who will turn 30 in July, was ProFootballFocus’ top-ranked cornerback in 2013, drawing excellent marks in pass coverage as well as run support. Last season, he fell to fourth among cornerbacks, excelling in the passing and running games in addition to penalties, flagged just four times on the season (two of which were accepted) while defensing a league-best 14 passes.
This time around, the Browns are hoping Revis’ connection to head coach Mike Pettine will convince the veteran to come to Cleveland. While ESPN Cleveland”s Tony Grossi infers that the Browns have nary a shot at adding Revis to a defensive backfield that already includes Joe Haden and (presumably) Tashaun Gipson, Cabot believes that there’s a chance it could happen.
Revis loved playing for #Browns Pettine in NY. Pettine is a great recruiter and the #Browns have money

It is dangerous to look too much into potential additions like this, but the days of Buster Skrine in Cleveland are looking more and more like they’re coming to an end. This may also signal that the team would rather not have to count on Justin Gilbert to rebound from a sub-par rookie season. Committing to Revis would require a lot of money to be spent on the defensive backfield, but it would instantly place them among the best in the league—if not the best—when it comes to specific units.
Stay tuned.

Or Draft Geno Smith…I will be nervously watching again hoping we don’t sell for Mariota
Somehow I don’t see this happening.
Kevin Burke…UFA. 😉
Revis. During practices. Jus’ like Johnny.
Regardless of whether or not they are willing to overpay Skrine to keep him, I think it makes sense that they would be looking for a short term fix opposite Haden. The trio of Gilbert, Williams, and Dessir have potential and are under control for a while. I can see why they might not want to give out a too-big, too-long contract to a top UFA corner, but given their excess of rollover money this year it would make sense to throw a lot of money at a one-year kind of guy.
Now I seriously doubt Revis wants to spend his age 30 season with the finally-up-to-seven-wins browns led by Josh McCown, but maybe there will be somebody else who is interested in a similar deal. Then again, money talks….
MAN, WISH WE WOULD HAVE JUST USED ONE OF LAST YEAR’S PICKS ON A YOUNGER, CHEAPER, LONG-TERM LOCK DOWN CORNER INSTEAD.
We certainly tried to.
No matter how much the Browns completely suck, they have never straight up tanked liked the ’11 Colts.
JJ Watt

Pierre Desir. ;D
