Tribe 101 with Prof. Rosen: Pitchers

March 20, 2015The Tennessee Titans are—believe it or not—a bigger mess than the Cleveland Browns. They also have a young quarterback who they feel could potentially be the future of the team, leading at least one NFL writer, CBS’ Jason La Canfora, to believe that while Oregon’s Marcus Mariota will go second overall in the upcoming NFL Draft, that it will not be to the woebegone Titans.
In a recent column, La Canfora lists five teams that could conceivably trade up to obtain the Oregon product, one of which is your Cleveland Football Browns.
Cleveland Browns: They are picking No. 12 and clearly needy for a quarterback and a stable citizen at the helm. Josh McCown is a great caretaker but he’s not the future. And Johnny Manziel had about as much of a lost rookie season as one could imagine. His future is already in doubt. The Browns have been peddling their 19th overall pick for Bradford – in both St. Louis and now Philadelphia – and owner Jimmy Haslam has been very intrigued by Mariota for quite some time. And make no mistake, his fingerprints were all over the Manziel selection. You can’t rule the Browns out by any stretch here, with the draft picks and willingness to do it. Haslam likes splash moves.
While Haslam likes the splash moves and the team needs a quarterback—big time—the one note that La Canfora left off is Mariota’s connection to current Browns quarterback coach Kevin O’Connell. Recall that the team had negotiated with O’Connell weeks before he was officially signed as the coach was spending beaucoup amounts of time working with the Heisman-winning Mariota.
Other teams listed include the St. Louis Rams (who just traded away Sam Bradford), New Orleans Saints (who could look for a contingency plan for the aging Drew Brees), the San Diego Chargers, and, of course, the Philadelphia Eagles and their head coach Chip Kelly.
Between reports surrounding Bradford and these continued links to other quarterbacks, it’s clear the team is not content with their current stable. If the Browns were to move from Nos. 12 and 19 to No. 2, there would likely be more involved in the deal. Then again, if the Browns feel Maritoa is the future at the position, they would be wise to do whatever it takes to make it happen.

No!
I do not want another QB who has never played under center.
He is not a “can’t miss” guy either. I will be (again) watching nervously hoping this does not happen
As much as the media likes to create a story that Haslam likes to make “splash moves,” where has there been any evidence of that happening? You could argue Manziel, but it’s not as if the Browns were the only team thinking he was a first-round draft pick.
Not saying that Haslam doesn’t have his problems, but not sure his actions are in line with the picture that the media has drawn of him.
Could _________ happen? Yes.
Because this is how people like to think of Jimmah….

I think we should see what it would take to pry Aaron Murray off KC’s bench.
He works great in a system but I thought OSU exposed him badly.
He’s a system QB. Realistically worth a second round pick at best.
Browns picking him means they have given up on Johnny and waste 3 first rounders in the process. (1 Manziel, 2 for Mariota)
Yep.
I would rather not trade up to get Mariota. There are too many holes on this team. I would much rather spend those draft picks on a WR, TE, OL or DT. Maybe look for a guy like Hundley or someone that grades out in the second round and let them sit behind McCown. Let someone else overpay for the pick.
I would take Sean Mannion 1000 times over Mariota. I don’t want another system specific QB drafted by the Browns. The Browns need a Big Ben type to compete in the AFC North. Get smart Cleveland.
List on a Lotus Elan is about $110,000-ish.
5 weeks at $9,534 plus $10,000 is only $57,670…
Unless you bought a used one. A really used one.
I’ll pass you on to my Nigerian cousin.
“Splash move” by Jimmy #1: Mingo. Hmm.
#2: Mike Pettine. ooooh
#3: Ray Farmer. Splashy splash-splash
#4: Canning Banner, Lombardi. ESPN moves HQ to CLE.
#5: Justin Gilbert. Palpitations.
#6: Manziel – make NO mistake, “his fingerprints were all over” that. (Science!)
Who knows what headlines he might grab next.
Serious question: after La Canfora’s last Jimmy expose, how does he still manage worm his way into Jimmy’s inner thoughts? Pettine doesn’t seem like the squealing type, Farmer’s career is hanging by 8″ of dental floss, Scheiner’s already been portrayed as the latest bean counter football guy wannabe. I say find the kid who wheels in the chewy tobaccy buffet. Either that’s your rat or Jason is underneath.
I think it’s secret Lombanner loyalists laying low in the current staff.
I say fire ’em all.
Only way to be sure.
I don’t think there’s any reason yet to believe Manziel will turn things around on the field, but it’s a positive sign that he has stuck with rehab for going on two full months now. There were more than a few people who questioned his sincerity when he checked himself in. Actions speak louder and all that jazz.
Exactly. It is obvious that this will not happen. La Canfora is lost in the woods. I wouldn’t be surprised if Haslam had some influence on the Manziel selection and if so, after last seasons debacle, the last thing he’s going to do is stick his dumb head in again and trade up to 2. The Browns can’t afford to miss again in the 1st round and they know it. They’ll play it safe and keep there picks.
National Media scans Cleveland Browns Transaction Report since Haslam has purchased team:
1. Fires Head Coach
2. Fires GM
3. Hires new business wiz kid out from under Jerry Jones
4. Has dinner with college Head Coach sensation Chip Kelly to offer job
5. Sells naming rights to Stadium
6. Begins process of new uniforms
7. One year later fires new hand selected Head Coach
8. One year later fires new GM (hand selection removed due to our belief Banner was forced)
9. “Allegedly” has hand in selection of first round QB college sensation Johnny Manziel
10. Significant entertainment and technology upgrades made to stadium
11. Releases “new logo”
12. Upcoming release of “new uniforms”
…..It’s as easy for them to look at this list and say SPLASH MOVES as it is for local fans to say, meh, normal stuff.
You forgot “raises tickets prices after going 11-21”.
Burn baby burn do it trade all your picks do it!
Been wanting Mannion now for quite some time, part of what seems like a dying breed in CFB. He’s a classic pocket passer, strong arm. I can care less of he can scramble or improvise. The great ones don’t fit that mold either.
I mean he still threw for 300 yards. OSU won by shutting down their run game and some costly drops by Oregon’s WRs.
hi NAH … mariota played decent in that game, but he took a beating.
farmer loves mariota , but they have a chance to get 2 STARTERS at 12 & 19 … i hope they don’t do it. i’m wondering if the eagles are going to wait to see if they can get mariota & THEN trade bradford to the browns … are the eagles really gonna go with bradford or are they merely holding onto him for insurance ?
I would take Bradford for the #19. See what front office does…They have to know the Eagles will be desperate if Mariota falls, so we have to play on that, and how many teams would insert Bradford right now into the starting slot?
