WFNY’s 2015 NFL Draft Coverage: Joe Gilbert’s Top Five Inside Linebackers
March 10, 2015Browns taking measured, patient approach to free agency
March 10, 2015The Cleveland Indians handed Gavin Floyd a shiny new contract with major league guarantees in hopes of a bounce-back from an injury-plagued 2013. Unfortunately for the Tribe, this appears to be off to a rough start as the veteran has apparently reinjured the same elbow that suffered a stress fracture a season ago.
The team, via press release, stated that they are in the process of gathering information on the treatment which may include surgery. Floyd suffered a stress fracture to his throwing (right) elbow last summer when pitching for the Braves, undergoing season-ending surgery on June 25. He posted a 2.65 ERA in nine starts last season before the injury. The season before, he underwent Tommy John surgery.
This winter, the 32-year-old signed a one-year, $4 million deal with incentives and was guaranteed a starting rotation spot if healthy. The cash-strapped Tribe have made an annual ritual out of signing veterans on a discount,1 but it has failed to pay much in the way of dividends outside of Scott Kazmir who used the team as a launching pad for his two-year, $22 million deal with the Oakland Athletics.
The Indians, conversely, appear to now have two rotation spots up for grabs. it’s conceivable that both young Danny Salazar and the left-handed T.J. House make the final cut, though veterans Shaun Marcum, Zach McAllister, Josh Tomlin the recently signed Bruce Chen are also vying for a spot.

Sad, but file under “not terribly surprising”. Here’s to hoping that September rotation from last year can keep it rolling.

Shapiro/Antonetti – lighting the dolan’s money on fire in free agency since 2001

Floyd was always a calculated risk, a lottery ticket with a high-but-unlikely upside.
Justin Masterson is getting $9.5M guaranteed this year. That’s the kind of deal Floyd was.
Anything that doesn’t mention that Bobby Bonilla is still making $1.2M from the Mets each year until 2035 is woefully lacking a bulletpoint.
Money owed for the 2000 season which he spent playing not for the Mets but the Braves.

Now it would have been incredibly difficult to make 8% a year since the beginning of 2000, and Bonilla is almost certainly actually ahead on this one, especially considering he took on no risk to get almost 8% a year, but it’s nowhere near as bad a deal as many think. Steve’s pro tip of the day – invest your money!
I still think the rotation will be fine.
Always take the lump sum up front.
Barring injury. Knock on wood. Light candle. Rain dance. Sacrifice chicken.
Definitely!
I’m not gonna say, “I told you so.” But I did.
high upside? I’m not sure how high that upside was.
If the Indians didn’t sign Floyd, would we all be complaining about how Dolan cheap Dolan is and how he pockets millions of dollars every season?
I’d put his upside as a league average pitcher who can give you 160 IPs – a back of the rotation innings-eater who won’t kill you every fifth day.
Using those numbers would put him at about 2.5 WAR. Lets knock off half a point though since he’s older, injury, blah blah. So 2.0 WAR. Based on last year, I’m guessing one win will cost around $7M this year. We’d be paying around $10M at most for $14M worth of value.
I didn’t expect the moon and the stars or anything.
Hey, remember the year Grady cost them $5? But I think he attended more of spring training.
Have this picture in my head of Paul Dolan bursting into kitchen all rosy-cheeked, snow on his boots, excitement in his voice as he holds up the lottery ticket and yells “Honey- this is it! I really think this is the year!” And she rolls her eyes, again.
my opinion is that dolan’s have shown they will be more flexible and willing to spend more and more. you just have morons writing those checks and choosing whom who should be on the receiving end.
i mean look at this garbage… matt lawton, swisher, bourn, david dellucci, ricky guiterrez, scott kaminicki, brett myers. i know im missing some but that is over $150m less than 0.0 WAR.
good think they can draft well… ugh.
We definitely need Chen to make the team now and hopefully fill a starter spot if he is still able. That $4 mil on Floyd is likely not covered by insurance since it’s only a one year deal. Not much money but completely wasted since so little is being thrown around. Compared to what is being wasted on Swisher (who will likely start the season on the DL), it doesn’t look bad.
Scott Kamienicki’s $1.8M from 2000? Now that is a long-held grudge.
Kluber-Carrasco-Bauer-Salazar-House. No need for Chen to make the team. Hopefully he’s interested in hanging around Columbus though.
That staff would be nice if they all pitched like they did in the second half of ’14. Outside of Kluber and House, those other three could easily regress or revert back to their old ways. I think House has the best chance to be consistent. I see Chen making the staff if he is solid and healthy in spring. One, if not two, or all three of them could struggle. My bet is on Salazar starting the season in Columbus.
