April 15, 2015The 2015 NFL Draft is two weeks away with excitement building every day. Over the course of the last month or so, I have released my top five players at each position and also my top 20 prospects on my big board. So now I set my eyes on individual skills in the draft. Each player has a different skillset that defines who he is as a player. But, which players have the best individual skills in the draft? The players in the defensive secondary need certain skills in order to succeed at those positions. So today, I will examine the NFL Draft prospects in the defensive secondary with the best individual skills.
Safeties
Best Coverage Skills: Damarious Randall, Arizona State
Randall is an athletic safety with great quickness and quick twitch ability to change directions. He can keep up with any receiver because of his athleticism.
Best Tackler/Hardest Hitter: Landon Collins, Alabama
Collins is a big powerful safety who brings the wood every time he goes in for a tackle. Even though he is a hard hitter, his technique is very good along with his strength to bring down bigger players.
Best Instincts: Landon Collins, Alabama
Collins can read and react to plays very quickly. He is not an especially fast player overall, but his instincts allow him to get to the ball very quickly both against the run and pass.
Best Ball Skills: Gerod Holliman, Louisville
Holliman led Division I FBS in interceptions with a total of 14 last season. He can high point a ball and has good hands to grab passes out of the air from offensive players.
Best Playmaker: Shaq Thompson, Washington
I project Thompson as a safety in the NFL and believe he can transfer his ability to make plays to the safety position. He has very good ball skills and athleticism, scoring four touchdowns on defense for Washington last season.
Best Athlete: Shaq Thompson, Washington
Thompson has the versatility to play multiple positions because of his athletic ability. His combination of size, physicality, and speed is the best in the class.
Cornerbacks
Best Coverage Skills: Kevin Johnson, Wake Forest
Johnson has great technique, quick feet, and excellent change of direction ability to stay with receivers. He can play on an island and potentially be a shutdown cover corner.
Best Athlete: Byron Jones, Connecticut
Jones is a physical freak with great explosion and speed, breaking the world record in the broad jump with a 147-inch jump. He has the ability to match up with any player on offense because of his athleticism.
Best Physicality: Marcus Peters, Washington
Peters plays with strength and physicality to control receivers at the line of scrimmage. He will look to knock receivers off their line and play the game with toughness.
Best Run Supporter: Marcus Peters, Washington
Peters uses his physicality and toughness in run support to tackle the ball carrier. He has the toughness to not shy away from helping out against the run.
Best Instincts: Trae Waynes, Michigan State
Waynes is a player who can read the quarterback and leave his man to follow the ball and make a play on the pass. His instincts allow him to play well in zone coverage as well as man coverage.
Best Ball Skills: Quinten Rollins, Miami (OH)
Rollins was third in the nation with seven interceptions last season. Using his basketball experience, he can jump and reach balls at its highest peak with good hands to make the catch.

Fantastic job Joe. I agree with all of the above and I think it really gives a nice level of depth to discuss these guys as the Browns prepare for the draft and then discuss whichever guys our favorite team selects.
