J.R. Smith three-point shooting stats never get old: WFNY Stats & Info

Yesterday was a Sunday (never forget) and J.R. Smith went 8-for-17 from the three-point line. So of course I’m back with an update to my tongue-in-cheek running joke of a WFNY Stats & Info in-depth analysis of Smith’s three-point record chasing. Let’s get onto the stats.

Most career three-point attempts in Cleveland Cavaliers franchise history:
1. LeBron James – 2,669
2. Mark Price – 1,960
24. Larry Hughes – 424

27. Kevin Love – 367

Since the last update three weeks ago, J.R. Smith also passed Ron Harper, Omri Casspi, Gerald Wilkins, Steve Kerr and Dajuan Wagner. No, I certainly didn’t expect that Dajuan Wagner attempted that many threes in a Cavaliers uniform. But here comes Smith (and Kevin Love) marching up the record books. With only five Cavs games remaining this season, and Smith averaging just over seven attempts per game, he’d be on track to barely catch McInnis at No. 28. Love should pass Delonte West into No. 26. That might be all the movement here.

Suddenly, this list is pretty bunch up with a trio of active players. Dirk Nowitzki’s Mavericks have five games left. Kyle Korver’s Hawks have six games left. And Steve Nash just retired officially. So the 19-26 range should be somewhat interesting in this final stretch of ther regular season. But holy moly, Ray Allen and Reggie Miller took a ton of threes in their career. That’s incredible. Third place is Jason Kidd way back at 5,701.

Now, back to where Smith’s current 42-game Cavs season ranks among the most prolific outside-shooting seasons in franchise history. He’s currently tied with LeBron’s sophomore season for the No. 22 spot. The 2014-15 versions of Kevin Love, Kyrie Irving and LeBron also all rank in the top 18. That’s just another great reminder of the evolution of today’s game.

I was curious about this one after diving into Smith’s past single seasons. His career high was 480 two years ago with the Knicks. He had 382 in 2006-07. He entered Sunday’s game with 381. So I looked at 380-plus. Jamal Crawford is at 345 attempts this year with five games left, so there’s an outside shot he ties Miller with an eighth career season.

And finally, onto the J.R. Smith-est of J.R. Smith stats. He’s an all-time chucker and his best skill is in single-game feats of strength. With his 17 attempts on Sunday, he extended his own NBA record with his eighth such 15-attempt game.

3. Stephen Curry – 19
Four players tied with 13

With his eight makes on Sunday, he also extended this NBA record with his 24th such seven-make game. Stephen Curry is hot on his heels for this one and should eventually take over the all-time record. But for now, Smith should be rest assured heading into the summer that his two lofty records are well intact.
