Video: Mike Polk imagines the first episode of Hard Knocks with the Cleveland Browns
April 30, 2015Browns select OL Cameron Erving with No. 19 pick
April 30, 2015Despite all of the rumors surrounding potential trades, the Cleveland Browns stood pat this time around and selected a player with the pick they earned with their 7-9 record in 2014. In doing so, Ray Farmer and company added a 300-plus-pound nose tackle in Washington’s Danny Shelton.
Rated as the No. 2 interior lineman by WFNY’s Joe Gilbert, Shelton had 93 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks in 2014. At 6-foot-2, 339 pounds, Shelton is a true, run-stuffing nose tackle.
Here’s more from Joe:
His hands are very strong, allowing him to toss blockers around in order to get free. With his strength comes athleticism that does not usually come in a player his size. He has quick feet to slip past blockers with a nice swim move and close on the ball carrier. Though he is a dominant run defender, Shelton can pressure the quarterback with a great bull rush.
Shelton biggest flaw is his lack of pass rush ability. He does not have any real pass rush moves, except for his strong bull rush. Another issue he must focus on is keeping his weight in check. He will not jump off the page with amazing plays, but he will be a huge cog in a defense’s ability to slow down the opposing team’s running game and for his teammates to get free to make plays.
“Danny Shelton, obviously a big kid with size,” said Farmer following the pick. “Here’s a young man who played upwards of 90 to 100 snaps out there in the PAC-12. He showed some ability to rush the passer, can play lateral and down the line of scrimmage. Definitely is a guy who I like to refer to as a guy who requires four hands, where he’s going to require more than one guy to pay attention to him. I love his temperament. I love how he played. I love that this kid is a smart kid, high GPA – high school and college. The guy is a football player. We’re excited about the fact that we’re going to add a guy that helps us solidify the middle of our defense and make us better up front.”
Shelton was a WFNY favorite, having been pegged to the Browns in Gilbert’s Mock Draft as well as our “Blueprint” for this weekend. Linked to the Browns from the very beginning, Shelton should be able to step in and immediately address the team’s gaping weakness in what was one of the league’s worst run-stopping units a season ago.
Behold: Feast Mode.

Happy. Now let’s see Parker at 19. Or, trade down to the mid-20’s and select OL/DL

Off to Miami…
what is Miami doing? They need some line help, plus no QB. Dion Jordan out. Stupid pick for them.
Gotta trade down

No razzle dazzle from Farmer so far this year. Keeps his hands back, goes with the pitch, solid double into the gap.
I’m willing to call it a double, but I’ll say it was one of those doubles that are pop-ups that hang up long enough to find the space just between the shortstop, 3rd baseman, and left fielder, thus giving the runner ample time to get to second.
you know what? Give me Shane Ray. F it.
Flowers is still there.
he went at 9 to the Giants.
what’s wrong with Bud Dupree? I’d take a chance on him, too.
Huh, crap…
Collins…Gregory?
I do NOT want Gregory.
DJ Humphries, maybe?
lots of good options here
you seriously couldn’t have gotten Cameron Erving in the second round? WTF?
You seriously assume that Cameron Erving would have been available when the Browns pick in the second round?
to be fair, i keep forgetting that the Browns have the 11 pick. I just assume they’re picking 33rd. But there are still a lot of guys on that board who i rate above him. at least 10, maybe 20
“But there are still a lot of guys on that board who i rate above him. at least 10, maybe 20”
Then that settles it. REACH.
10, maybe 20? Interesting. If only Ray got a hold of your list…
Not sexy but solid so far this is the kind of draft that needed to be made five years ago as a foundation.
Hooray! I’m not in Coke debt today!
I freaking love this pick, and I love this player. Honestly, I think this guy is as close to Haloti Ngata as you’re going to find (and consequently, was taken in the exact same spot that Ngata was taken in ’06).
