May 11, 2015CSU offseason roundup: Anton Grady transfers to Wichita State
May 11, 2015The Browns have had a busy day on Monday, signing eight players and their sixth-round pick Charles Gaines, and now they have inked a deal with their first pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, defensive tackle Danny Shelton, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport is reporting that the Browns have agreed to sign Shelton to a four year deal with $11.7M fully guaranteed and a $6.7M signing bonus. The signing of the Shelton marks the fourth 2015 draft pick to sign their rookie deal with the Browns, with linebacker Nate Orchard, defensive back Charles Gaines, and tight end Randall Telfer already reaching an agreement with the team. Offensive lineman Cameron Erving and running back Duke Johnson are two of the more notable picks who have yet to sign with the Browns.

Danny Shelton is coming in to the NFL as a player who is expected to contribute right away as a run-stuffing nose tackle. The 6-foot-2, 339-pound defensive tackle has the strength and girth to control interior of the line and fill up the interior running lanes for the Browns defense. As a senior at Washington last season, he amassed 93 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss and nine sacks. He was graded as the best nose tackle prospect in the draft my most experts and was my No. 2 best interior defensive lineman behind Leonard Williams.
Shelton fills a huge need for the Browns on the defensive line. After ranking last in run defense last season, the Browns needed someone who could control the middle of the defensive line and be the a run stopper. Shelton fits that description to a T. His run stopping ability should thrust him into the lineup immediately, especially on first and second downs. His presence on the defensive line will be a site for sore eyes for Browns fans, after watching the horrible run defense of last season.
There are other reports that say that the deal has not yet been agreed upon by both parties. So we shall see if anything changes with the contract between the Browns and first-round pick Danny Shelton.

UPDATE: Via a press release on Friday afternoon, the Browns officially announced that they have signed first-round pick Danny Shelton. The Browns have now signed eight of the club’s 12 draft picks. Terms haven’t been made official, so it will be interesting to see how much they deviate from what was reported on Monday, if at all. The Browns also signed offensive lineman Cameron Irving on Friday, coming to terms with both first-round choices in the same day.

The Shelton of Swamp
Wise for big, big men to ink the guaranteed money before the second minicamp. These draftees do get injured.
I’m confused. I thought the rookie salary structure basically dictated the contracts that draftees receive. Shouldn’t all this just be players signing those contracts?
can’t wait to watch shelton do his thing when the games count …
The players have an injury agreement they sign before the camps, which basically says that if a guy gets injured (like Fowler for the Jags or Heuermann for the Broncos), the team agrees to still offer them the contract they would have absent injury, in good faith. For first rounders in particular, with the salary scale, it should be pretty pro forma.
My bad. I know about the injury waiver but thought the payout was way more limited than that.
It’s all about the guaranteed money, the fifth year, and the fringe elements. It makes it possible to sign guys early, but some agents worry about signing early, then having everyone around them make them look bad, which hurts their recruiting the next year.
