May 30, 2015Long snapper Christian Yount has been waived by the Browns, general manager Ray Farmer announced on Friday.
In Cleveland since 2011, The 26-year-old out of UCLA appeared in 53 games for the orange and brown. The long snapper registered three tackles and three assists with the Browns.
Yount was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during training camp in 2011, but was waived by the Bucs that October. The Browns picked him up exactly five weeks later, and signed him to a five-year contract extension in 2013. More details on the contract, courtesy of the Akron Beacon Journal‘s Nate Ulrich:
In 2013, Yount received a five-year, $4.2 million contract extension. He was scheduled to make base salaries of $820,000 this coming season, $835,000 next year and $855,000 in 2017.
Charley Hughlett, who was signed off of the Kansas City Chiefs practice squad last December, is the current favorite to take over snapping duties. The 25-year-old from Central Florida, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2012, was put on the Browns practice squad toward the end of last year. He has yet to appear in an NFL game. He has also spent time on the New England Patriots practice squad.
Yount replaced Ryan Pontbriand, who snapped for the Browns from 2003 to 2011. The Browns drafted Pontbriand in the fifth round in 2003, making him the 13th long snapper to be drafted since 1982 and the highest-drafted long snapper ever.1
One of the most under-appreciated positions on the football field, a long snapper is expected to not make a mistake, and actually, most people do not even think of that position even during field goals and punts. Pontbriand was flawless for years, but in 2011 he semi-famously snapped a ball off of Alex Mack’s leg, which resulted in Phil Dawson missing a chip shot that would have beaten the St. Louis Rams.
Known for his humor on Twitter, Yount — who describes himself as a burrito enthusiast and sportsman in his bio — will surely be missed in the Cleveland Twitter world.
