The low cost of buying into the Cavs
June 15, 2015Please not on our court: While We’re Waiting
June 16, 2015The first five games of the NBA Finals have been nothing short of incredible, and they have attracted an audience commensurate with the level of play.
On Monday, ESPN’s Media Zone said that the series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors is the highest-rated (measured in Nielsen ratings) and most-watched (measured in total number of people) NBA Finals in ABC history. ABC has broadcasted the Finals since the 2002-03 season.
Featuring players like LeBron James and Stephen Curry, many people are tuning into the series between the injury-riddled Cavaliers and run-and-gun Warriors.
Per ESPN:
The record-setting 2015 NBA Finals is averaging a 13.5 overnight rating through five games, which is up 27 percent from a 10.6 last year.
[Sunday] night’s Game 5 delivered a 14.2 overnight rating, which is the highest-rated Game 5 on ABC in more than a decade and up 21 percent from an 11.7 for last year’s Game 5 (Miami-San Antonio).
The games may start at 9 p.m. on the East coast, but that hasn’t seemed to bother the majority of people who want to watch the final series of the NBA season
The 2015 NBA Finals, in which the Golden State Warriors lead the Cleveland Cavaliers 3-2, is the most-watched ever on ABC through five games, according to Fast Nationals from Nielsen. The series is averaging 19,215,000 viewers, which is up 25 percent from 15,373,000 viewers last year (Miami-San Antonio).
These are huge numbers, and the improvements over 2014’s Heat-Spurs series suggests that the Cavs and Warriors are a much more exciting (and watchable) matchup.
The series continues to have a trickle-down effect on related NBA programming as well:
Last night’s edition of NBA Countdown, ABC’s NBA Finals pre-game show, delivered a 3.7 overnight rating, which was up 28 percent from a 2.9 for last year’s Game 5 pre-game show.
Whether it’s the fact that the 2014-15 MVP is going up against arguably the best player in the world or just the fact that the NBA Finals involves two of the best fan bases in the NBA, a lot of people seem to be enjoying the matchup between the Cavaliers and Warriors.
With Golden State holding a 3-2 lead in the series, Game 6 tips off Tuesday night at 9 p.m. ET, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Nobody but Clevelanders was supposed to watch tho isn’t that what all the “experts” predicted? They should thank the best player in the world.
you say, “arguably” a lot when talking about LeBron. I am pretty sure there are no arguments that he is the best player on earth.
