June 12, 2015The Cavaliers are a feel-good story and not done yet – WFNY Podcast – 2015-06-12
June 12, 2015Through the first four games, the 2015 NBA Finals matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors—two not-large markets, mind you—is the highest-rated Finals series in the history of the league.
According to ESPN’s Media Zone:
The 2015 NBA Finals, in which the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are tied 2-2, is the highest-rated ever on ABC through four games, according to Nielsen. Last night’s Game 4 delivered a 13.9 overnight rating, which is the highest-rated Game 4 on ABC in over a decade and up 31 percent from a 10.6 for last year’s Game 4 (Miami-San Antonio). The broadcast peaked with a 16.0 from 11:15-11:30 p.m. ET.
Locally, the NBA Finals on ABC continues to deliver big numbers. In the Cleveland market, Game 4 generated a 45.7 rating, which is the second-highest rated NBA game ever on ABC (Game 3 was the highest). In the San Francisco market, the broadcast delivered a 30.5 rating, which is the third-highest rated NBA game ever on ABC (Games 2 and 3 rank as the highest).
Think about this for a second: Just like on Tuesday night, nearly half of every television in the Cleveland market was tuned into the Cavaliers on Thursday night. The impact of these Finals, thanks to LeBron James, his return to Cleveland, and the league’s MVP in Steph Curry standing in his way, has even trickled down to ancillary programing. NBA Countdown, ABC’s NBA Finals pre-game show, posted a 4.8 overnight rating, which was up 23 percent from a 3.9 for last year’s Game 4 pre-game show. The WatchESPN smartphone app also broke records, drawing 744,500 unique viewers for Game 4. Weird: It’s almost like the league doesn’t need big markets to succeed in order to thrive. Players and storylines, however, are all the rage.
Among the best markets in terms of ratings (behind Cleveland), the Cavaliers have also drawn interest from Columbus, Ohio; Miami, Florida; and Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina. The Cavaliers continue their quest for their first championship in team history and the first for the city of Cleveland in 51 years on Sunday night at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Wait but everyone said how bad a series this was supposed to be…

These finals are the highest rated since ABC took over the telecasts, not the highest in league history. The Bulls pulled in bigger numbers when they were winning titles. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Basketball_Association_Nielsen_ratings)
But it’s been great that so many people have been tuning in, especially with the two games in Cleveland so the country can see it is not all doom and gloom around here.
