C-Cap Recap: Tribe Tops Royals, Cures Your Ills
June 5, 2015Next Up: Indians vs. Orioles back at home
June 5, 2015The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to bounce back on Sunday, but according to Jon Barry in an interview with Dan Patrick, they’re not counting on Kyrie Irving to be a part of it. Barry couldn’t pinpoint which injury has the Cavaliers so worried, but he heard someone say that they think he’s done.
“I heard something from a Cavalier person – and this is not documented – but they feel like he’s done for the series.”
Now Kyrie’s own comments weren’t that definitive, but assuming he wasn’t as forthcoming with the media as he was with his agent, father and Cavs’ brass behind closed doors, it’s not hard to imagine someone with the Cavaliers saying this to Jon Barry. Kyrie was willing to admit that he was “a little worried,” and he probably should be based on how many struggles he’s had with his health during these playoffs.
Obviously the Cavs are a better team when Kyrie Irving is playing and playing well, but at a certain point, there’s a risk for the player’s long-term health and the mentality of a team that continually rides the health roller coaster with him. At a certain point, guys risk all sorts of secondary injuries when they supposedly can’t make their primary one “any worse” by playing on it. Kyrie Irving might finally be at that point and the Cavaliers might finally be at the point where they’re better off knowing they don’t have the hobbled superstar than trying to make it through the remaining games of the NBA Finals with doubts and questions about it.
It’s just so hard – whether you’re a Cavs staffer or even Kyrie’s father – to talk about the health and status of a player. It’s an equation with unlimited variables. The only variable that the Cavaliers can control is whether or not Kyrie will play. I say this without judgment or criticism of Kyrie Irving, but maybe it’s time to shut him down. That is, if he hasn’t already made the decision for them.

bad words. will take a miracle now.
I’m with you. Shut him down. Too much long-term potential to risk here.
“It’s do or die time in the NBA Finals. Delly, it’s all up to you.”

I’d rather they lose this series than lose Kyrie permanently.

EVERYTHING IS FINE
I keep telling myself, it’s not do-or-die this season. we have a FUTURE, and especially after Love reiterated how he’s going to stay, we don’t even have to deal with the “Will Lebron/Kyrie/Love leave Cleveland this off season? Here’s the reasons why….” articles. well, hopefully not as many, anyway.
So, FUTURE. We’ll wait another year. With a healthy Kyrie we didn’t push into a career-ending injury.
Hey Harv, appears you have a typo. You typed “year” where you clearly meant “month”
well, was taking into account the concept of “finals” before the roster started its slight makeover in early July.

I figured, I just was thinking:

My least favorite person reporting I mean speculating from unidentified sources, I love it! Sadly however I would not be surprised if KI was done.
Yikes Barry is almost bad as Broussard actually tweeting he didn’t know why Irving left on crutches.
It’s a balance I mean as Cleveland sports teams have shown a finals or world series appearance one year doesn’t mean another the following year. But I agree it absolutely makes no sense to jeopardize a career for the finals now especially when even if KI can play it clearly will be less then 100%!
This does however raise an important other subject and that is the fragility of not only Love but KI. Neither has shown an ability to be “counted on” when it mattered most given Love’s injury was a terrible fluke. These flukes seem to follow both Love and KI. Perhaps, for the greater good and future this is something to keep in mind for David Griffin. He resigned KI and another injury riddled guy in Varejao would making it a trifecta with Love be smart?
It is bad, but let’s not overstate it. Irving was injured coming into the series. Even if Shumbert’s shot had gone in, and Irving was not hurt, he could very easily have been hurt at the start of Game 2, and we might be in a very similar situation next week. When your 2nd and 3rd highest scorers are injured/not 100% and out, respectively, it is harder. With Irving, Love, and Varejao healthy (and here) next year, things would look very different.
at some point you have to just go with the odds. Varejao, much as I love that guy, has terrible odds. KI and Love are too young to just give up on yet. Lebron, Love, Kyrie will be here next season– and maybe Love will stay longer if they can work out the contract situations. The East isn’t gonna climb out of the ditch anytime soon it seems, so as long as the Cavs make it TO the playoffs, they have a good chance at making it to the Finals. That’s in our favor too.
Just seeing now that Kyrie has a fractured left kneecap, so he’s done. Back to playing the odds, looking to next year.
Ouch fractured knee cap well I guess those people who were giving KI grief can shut their pie holes now!
Fractured knee cap requires surgery!
man, I was blissfully ignorant of these people giving him grief. GRR. Dude walked off the court with a broken kneecap, shove it.

to be clear, I wasn’t telling YOU to shove it. ;0)
I agree that Varejao, as much of a hustler as he is, needs to go somewhere else. I love the guy’s game and his heart, but pro sports is a business, and if a guy is sitting with major injuries year after year, as an organization you just have to make a change for that position. I think Irving will be fine down the road. And Love too. Both had pretty healthy regular seasons. But Delly needs to be replaced, and so does Varejao. I think JR Smith is gone. I hate to lose Shumpert but I think he’ll leave too. Which means, you gotta find a way to keep T. Thompson and K-Love. A backup PG will be a necessity next season, as will an on the ball defender and/or three point threat, either in FA or the draft.
