June 15, 2015After a false alarm last weekend, the day is finally here: No. 1 Cleveland Indians prospect Francisco Lindor will be promoted on Sunday. Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan was the first to report the news; MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian later confirmed.
Last week, when Jose Ramirez was sent to Triple-A Columbus (along with Lonnie Chisenhall), many expected Lindor to be called up in his place. Instead, the Indians sent up utility man Zach Walters. Walters continued to struggle hitting for average and now has a .159/.202/.363 line in 39 career games for Cleveland. Update at 10:30 a.m. Sunday: Nick Swisher was moved to the 15-day disabled list with left knee inflammation in the corresponding roster move.
Lindor, 21, was the No. 8 pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. He was a consensus top-10 prospect in all of baseball entering this season. In 95 career games in Triple-A through Friday, he batted .276/.330/.394 with 15 doubles, five triples, seven home runs, 36 RBI and 11 steals. His stolen base and BB/SO rates were both way down from his 109-game sample with Double-A Akron. Additionally, GM Chris Antonetti cited some very minor hand/core issues last week when discussing his non-promotion. No set deadline had been announced for his expected debut at that time.

There has been an incredible string of top baseball prospect promotions within the last few weeks. The Minnesota Twins announced on Saturday that their top prospect, outfielder Byron Buxton, also would be promoted this weekend. The Houston Astros promoted Carlos Correa and the Texas Rangers promoted Joey Gallo all in the last week, as well. With those flurries of moves, it is likely the Super-Two free agency deadline had passed.

Well this is some unexpected good news. Hopefully the young man doesn’t try to do to much all at once. I’d be fine with solid glove (no errors) and an average bat. Trying to temper expectations. I’m just glad he’s up finally.
