Ball Played: Tigers continue mastery over Indians
June 23, 2015Tribe 101 with Prof. Rosen: Mid-Term Evaluation
June 23, 2015With the college football season quickly approaching, the Ohio State Buckeyes football team, who are the favorites by many to win the second (and back-to-back) College Football Championship, have been talked about a lot in the college football world.
To reach their second straight College Football Playoff, the Buckeyes will likely have to finish the regular season undefeated. Well, according to Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook manager Ed Salmons, the scarlet and gray will be double-digit favorites in every regular season game come fall.
“Ohio State is going to be double-digit favorites in every game throughout the regular season and the Big Ten Championship game. Their toughest conference game is going to be at home against Michigan State, and I’m thinking the number should be Ohio State as high as minus-16. You won’t see a single-digit number on them until the playoffs start,” said Salmons, in an interview with SportingNews.
Along with being double-digit favorites in every regular season game, Salmons also gave the Buckeyes 1-to-4 odds to win the Big Ten Championship game and 3-to-1 odds to win their second College Football Championship in as many years.
People may argue that this proves that the Big Ten is so weak, but Salmons even believes that Ohio State would be favored if they took on Alabama.
If the Buckeyes were to meet the Crimson Tide of Alabama again (in the College Football Playoff), Ohio State wold be 3-point favorites on a neutral field, according to Salmons. If you forgot, the Cardale Jones-led Buckeyes were 7.5-point underdogs against Alabama in 2014. when Ohio State beat the Crimson Tide, 42-35/
Salmons believes that the only downfall for the Buckeyes is the fact that the SEC is so good (and the Big Ten is so bad), and the internal struggle of who to play at quarterback.
“He’s (coach Meyer) going to try and play all three of them, but I just don’t see it working out. Braxton Miller should either transfer or red shirt. It’s kind of like the situation with Kentucky basketball this year, where John Calipari indicated after the season that he’d probably do things differently if he had to do it all over again in regards to playing time,” Salmons said.
In 2014, the Buckeyes were an underdog in four games – all four of those games were won by Ohio State.
Buckeye fans do not have to worry about a weak schedule for the scarlet and gray. Their schedule will most likely be tougher than 2014 and obviously, their 2014 schedule seemed to prepare them just fine.
