Outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo was on the practice field for the first time in nearly a month Monday, and may be able to play in the Browns season opener against the New York Jets. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus on August 6, and he was expected to be out for roughly four weeks.
Last week, Browns head coach Mike Pettine said he was hopeful that Mingo would return in time to play at New York on September 13, though he said that the target was still “up in the air.” Mingo said Monday that he would play against the Jets if it were up to him, but that the coaches and medical staff will have the final say. He is not expected to play in the final preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

The No. 6 overall pick in the 2013 draft, Mingo missed much of training camp and has yet to play in a preseason game this year. Paul Kruger has one outside linebacker spot locked up, and Mingo will be competing for playing time at the other with rookie Nate Orchard (who missed the third preseason game and Monday’s practice due to a back injury) and Scott Solomon.
“There are a lot of spots [being contested],” Pettine said in July, before Mingo’s surgery. “Defensively, all of those guys on the D-line compete for playing time; the outside ‘backer room where we made some changes — Scott Solomon coming on late and drafting Nate Orchard — to challenge Mingo.”
Mingo played in 15 games (11 starts) for the Browns last year, totaling 42 tackles with two sacks and one fumble recovery. He was hampered by a shoulder injury for much of the year. He had 42 tackles and five sacks in his rookie season.
Other Browns returning to practice Monday included wide receiver Terrelle Pryor (hamstring), cornerbacks Justin Gilbert (hip flexor), Robert Nelson (hamstring), and K’Waun Williams (oblique), safety Jordan Poyer (concussion) and nose tackle Ishmaa’ily Kitchen (groin).
Running back Duke Johnson and cornerback Pierre Desir (concussions) were among those not at practice Monday. Rookie corner Charles Gaines (hamstring) did some work with a trainer, while Johnny Manziel (elbow) did not throw.

what is a MINGO?
Webster’s Dictionary defines it as: another missed first round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns.
Hooray? Seriously, is this good news? Is he any good?
if a Mingo returns to practice and everyone is around to see it, does he make any noise?
no he is not.
