Superstitions, Qualifying Offers, and Swan Songs: While We’re Waiting
August 11, 2015Not everyone in Indians clubhouse sad to see Nick Swisher go
August 11, 2015It’s okay, everyone. No need to drive to the I-480 bridge. Yes, Joe Thomas was hurt in practice on Monday. But, it sounds like he’s going to be fine.
Thomas went down after having his right leg rolled up on at training camp, reportedly by rookie defensive tackle Danny Shelton. Word in Berea is that Thomas did not suffer a serious injury, and, thus, Shelton will not be punished with exile of any kind.
Per the team’s official announcement, “OL Joe Thomas left today’s practice with a leg injury that is not believed to be serious.” Head coach Mike Pettine echoed that almost to the letter, saying, “I don’t think it is anything serious.”
Thomas has today’s practice off. He’s around the field and walking around with neither a brace nor a limp. He’s passing the time on a stationary bike with the other wounded.
One of the best reports of Monday’s action came from the Akron Beacon Journal‘s Nate Ulrich:
Rookie nose tackle Danny Shelton fell after being blocked by center Alex Mack and inadvertently rolled up the back of Thomas’ right leg while he and left guard Joel Bitonio were engaged with defensive end Desmond Bryant during a running play in an 11-on-11 drill. Thomas immediately yelled and fell to the ground, then rose to his feet and walked off the field.
Head athletic trainer Joe Sheehan examined Thomas’ right ankle and knee for a few minutes off to the side. Offensive line coach Andy Moeller talked to Thomas as Sheehan checked the leg. Then Thomas made a long walk with assistant head athletic trainer Andre Tucker off the field and into the team’s facility.
Thomas, who’s been named first-team All Pro five times, didn’t walk with a dramatic limp. He seemed to be in good spirits as he left the field.
Thomas didn’t look like a terribly concerned fellow while being treated on the sidelines.

Thomas has started all 128 games with the Browns since being drafted No. 3 overall in 2007 and has famously never missed a snap. He was recently the subject of a profile, “Cleveland’s Rock” by Robert Mays for Grantland, which revealed that Thomas and other Browns veterans met with team owner Jimmy Haslam and president Alec Scheiner in hopes of slowing the perpetual cycle of teamwide turnover.
Thomas endeared himself to Cleveland years ago — perhaps first when he skipped the draft to go fishing with his old man — and has been a rare symbol of stability since the franchise rebooted.
Rookie lineman Cameron Erving said he’s learned plenty from Thomas in just a couple weeks of practice.
“I can’t tell you how many things I learned from Joe in a short amount of time,” the Florida State product said. “So many little things like how to be successful, how to be a true professional, how to handle yourself as far as training room and getting the routine. I’ve learned some of those things, and I’m still learning. He’s been in the league for a while now.”
“Everybody knows how good of a good player that Joe is. What kind of advice do you think he’s given me?1 It’s got to be good.”
Linebacker Paul Kruger said that Thomas’ going down was a scary sight, in large part because of his tenure and track record.
“There are cornerstone guys that you really need out there, and Joe has been a really effective player for a long time. You want to take care of those guys and make sure they are healthy.”
The reports are certainly encouraging2 , as an injury to Thomas would have been a special brand of heartbreak — even for the Browns. He has manned the blind side as well as any man alive for the better part of the past decade, and any Browns fan will be happy to hear that he’s okay.
(But maybe say an extra prayer or two just in case.)

Word is, he actually broke both the tibula and the fibula – in half, I heard – but his primal yell and will power mended them both together and transformed the bones into a substance now stronger than titanium.

You’re killing me.
“Vibranium absorbs more impact than adamantium.”
*ahem* its your
“its your”
The English-speaking universe just imploded from a double-possessive with no object.
But neither can absorb as much impact as Joe Thomas’s bones.
Irregardless of the correctableness of the usage, you is both incorupt.
Can you name the TWO very different movies to reference unobtainium?
I love terrible sci fi movies
Yeah, he should of known better.
One was Avatar, I believe.
I know of unobtanium from motorcycles. When you go to buy a part that’s ridiculously expensive, it’s usually because it’s made of unobtanium.
Well played.

Avatar. Was that the Kevin Costner movie where he goes to fight the Sioux, but then makes friends with them, falls in love with one of them, joins the tribe, and then ultimately fights against his own people?
The Draft?
The Core (which is in the top 5 of greatest awful movies ever)….and then stolen by Cameron for Avatar.
No, that was Ferngully.
Yes!
