September 24, 2015Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones will remain the starting quarterback for Week 4 against Western Michigan, head coach Urban Meyer announced in a press conference following Wednesday night’s practice.
With an offense that has underwhelmed over the last two games, including suspect play at the quarterback position, Meyer and company have decided to not make a change, at least to start the game.
“It’s not [Jones]. It’s the offense right now is in a funk,” Meyer said. “Every time you say, ‘Boy what a great game by the quarterback.’ No. It was a great game by the offense. When you’re not getting protected, when you’re not balanced or control the line of scrimmage, when you’re not perimeter blocking very good, the quarterback struggles.”
After beating out J.T. Barrett in the quarterback competition during fall camp, the redshirt junior has started the first three games of the season for the top-ranked Buckeyes. But after poor performances to start the games against both Hawaii and Northern Illinois, Jones was replaced by Barrett.
Barrett, however, has also struggled and did not do enough in either of the games to win the job over Jones, according to Meyer.
A quarter of the way through the regular season, Jones is 26-of-46 passing for 334 yards, with two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also has 21 carries for 115 yards and a touchdown. Barrett, on the other hand, is 20-for-35 for 193 yards, including two touchdowns and one interception. He has five carries for 65 yards.
Although the starting quarterback was quite the debate heading into Wednesday’s press conference, Meyer wanted to make sure that everyone knew that it’s not just the quarterback that’s struggling, but the entire offense.
“All this focus on that guy behind center, I get,” Meyer said. “Everybody’s gotta do their job, but that’s not my focus. That’s not our focus. It’s all together.”
