NEO High School Football Week 2: Mentor wins shootout, moves to No. 1 in rankings
September 7, 2015Browns suspend OL coach Andy Moeller indefinitely
September 7, 2015The Cleveland Browns announced that they have signed quarterback Austin Davis on Monday, following his trip to the Browns’ facility and the passing of his physical on Monday.
With Johnny Manziel suffering through an elbow injury, the Browns are in need of a backup quarterback ahead of Sunday’s opener in New York, against the Jets. Davis appears to be the guy the Browns have chosen for that spot.
Entering his fourth season in the NFL, the 6-foot-2, 221-pound quarterback graduated from Southern Mississippi. Davis was originally signed by the Rams as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2012. Following a short stint with the Miami Dolphins, the 26-year old returned to St. Louis and played in 10 games for the Rams in 2014, including eight starts. In those 10 games, he completed 180 of 284 pass attempts (63.4 percent) for 2,001 yards to go along with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
At Southern Miss, Davis set single-season and career records for passing yards, touchdowns, and completion percentage.
To make room on the 53-man roster, defensive back Charles Gaines was placed on the IR-designated to return list. Gaines will be eligible to return to practice Week 6 and eligible to play Week 8.
The biggest question following the signing of Davis — with 10 starts last season — could he give Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel a run for their money as the starting or backup quarterback in 2015? If so, it may say a lot more about McCown and Manziel than it does Davis.

Davis will end up being the starting QB by year end.
Thank God Ohio State starts tonight!
It seems its another rebuilding year. Pick a QB or a certain DE with its top pick. Dont trade down and pick a project player. Do the opposite of what a Brown GM and coach would do. In the case of having a top 5 either pick the franchise QB or a certain DE that plays for The Ohio State Buckeyes. If someone cant do their job they should be fired. Every year should not be a rebuilding year, regardless of a new owner or coach.

I don’t see how he beats out Cardale Jones
Win enough games that you don’t have a shot at a top QB
I like this move… Davis played fairly well for a Brian Schottenheimer-led offense (very tough to do), and he might now be the best QB on the Browns.
I wouldn’t go that far, but much better than Thad Lewis. Good use of cut downs. Davis did have around an 85 QB rating for the Rams last year (in a pretty tough mix of games too, beating the Hawks in one of them)
I dunno, we’re only talking about him needing to beat out Josh McCown and Johnny Manziel for the job. I think it’d be a longshot, but not from a talent perspective. Simply because he didn’t have the benefit of going through camp with the Browns and learning everything he needs to know in the offseason.
I love the way the media covers the Browns!! If Cleveland signed Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, news of the signing of some unknown unheard of backup could result in him possibly being the starter before the season ends!! Statements like yours Josh rad getting really old!
The likelihood of him starting is right around 50%. McCown and Manziel haven’t proved they can stay healthy (many sads for that) for an entire season.
