More noise about Tristan Thompson and Toronto
August 31, 2015Browns expectations and Buckeye QBs: While We’re Waiting…
September 1, 2015It’s probably not fair to speculate on what Dan Gilbert’s nighttime visions look like, but we’re going to do it anyway. It also seems fitting to speak of nightmares so close to the death of one of the beloved masters of horror, Wes Craven. After WFNY put this GIF together we felt it was almost as scary as some of Craven’s greatest works. It’s also somewhat indicative of why the Cavaliers and Tristan Thompson haven’t put a deal together yet as the rising volume of noise around the situation starts to peak.
Tell me that if you were Dan Gilbert that wouldn’t have you feeling like Drew Barrymore at the beginning of Scream. Tell me that you wouldn’t prefer a chilling phone call … from inside the house! (R.I.P. Mr. Craven.) And good luck to you Dan Gilbert.

How to solve the TT problem in two simple steps:
Step 1 (2016 NBA season):

Step 2 (2016 NBA season + 1 minute):

UGH! Editing graphic posts on here never works. lol
a) It’s just money, Dan’s money, and while this is undoubtedly uncomfortable it’s hardly Wes Craven stuff to him, given the amounts Dan has made and spent in the last 25 years.
b) In two years all NBA owners will be forced – forced! – to spend amounts covering most of your maroon area that seems so craaazy now. Players worse than TT will be making close to today’s max because all teams are required to spend their spending floor over a finite number of players. TT level limited talent might be the new max, no matter how long we hold our breath, stomp angrily and scream “that’s not a max player!”
c) The Cavs have LeBron not because of skill, but because of raw luck: he was born here, they won the ’03 lottery, and he wanted to come back here. Gilbert paid to inherit that good fortune. This is part of his new payment coupon book. And, oh,these Cavs also produce income for him.
d) It’s just money, Dan’s money. TT seems to be a good guy, and certainly good for the team. We don’t know how effective or sturdy Andy will be. Or how sturdy Love is. Or exactly what Kaun is. So stop nervously counting Dan’s money like a sputtering Trump supporter. Dan’s been doing a decent job counting his money since he was an amateur bookmaker in college. He’s better at counting his money than you. You have a big bucks team in a big boy league. Just try to enjoy it.
That’s a fun gif, but I’m curious what the cost difference of that additional $400k for TT is. I’m also curious about what a revenue gif would look like. I think Gilbert would spend into the red in the short term, but it’s looking like they may still turn a profit with a $190M payroll, crazy as that may sound.

“We will have six seven-figure deals between new deals and renewals,”
and
“The RSN last year exercised an option to retain the team’s rights through the 2020-21 NBA season for an average of $35 million to $38 million a year, making the deal one of the richest in the league”
Not to mention the national TV revenue, the increased ticket prices, merchandise out the yang, etc.
Craig, do you really think a man such as Dan Gilbert, who has a net worth of $4.8 billion, is having nightmares over what he may pay to TT? Please explain.
This post was meant to be a bit tongue in cheek and to pay a bit of homage to Wes Craven.
Uptick for the shout out to Wes; but you’re really not helping the “why you pay Tristan” debate here by false headlining dude 😉
For anyone who lands on this article and can’t see it as tongue in cheek that Tax Nightmare is from everyone’s salary combine not just Tristan. And it’s a nightmare that Dan gladly signed up for when he sat down with LBJ that faithful day in Miami.
And if you want to be honest about which contract is the true nightmare…….Eh hem….Andy……cough cough.
Ahh. I picked a bad day to stop drinking. Bleh!!
But what if Andy stays healthy throughout the rest of his contract? Scary!!
The ? isn’t can Dan Gilbert pay Tristan Thompson it is should he? The answer is: no. And Thompson has given Gilbert the perfect out by being completely unreasonable with this contract negotiation. But regardless of that no way do I want to sign Thompson for 5 years and risk the chance he backslides when he’s not even a double double player statistically averaged right now.
And for those who want to start a discussion based on next year when the league is swamped with cash save it. That’s a once in a lifetime perfect storm and does not change the overall value of a player. All it means is that average player can now have an opportunity to make more $$$ simply because there is more $$$ to earn. The first thing I want to see is all of these owners readily “making it rain” across the league. I’m sure there will be some who lose their mind but I don’t believe for one minute you will see teams strapped with extra cash go off on a spending frenzy. So please save your hypothetical what if scenarios for contract negotiations a la Rich Paul. Cavs are in the drivers seat when it comes to Mr. Thompson it’s that simple. If they want to pay him fine but if they don’t that’s fine too.
It would be nice to do it with him during his final season but part of me wouldn’t mind seeing him sit out while he waits to go back to Toronto supposedly.
Just don’t let him play more then 25-28 minutes a game and maybe, just maybe, Varejao will survive.
You keep saying that next year and beyond has nothing to do with this
year but in reality it has everything to do with now and future.
Because when the 2016 season ends and both he and Timofey are free agents…you’ll have wished you would have given 26 year Tristan his money in 2015 instead of 31 year Timofey even more money. We won’t keep both and the plan has ALWAYS been to let Timo walk.
As easily as I can put this (thanks EJ Maroun) is like this:
Tristan’s Contract Demand: 5 years / $94 Million dollars = 20% of cap moving forward or the equivalent of $12,559,555 in next year’s salary.
Players making around this same money include: Joakim Noah, Serge Ibaka, Andre Iguodala, Rajon Rondo, Derrick Favors and Andrew Bogut.
Tristan fits in this tier of players very well AND this tier of players will all be commanding the exact same $18.8 in 2017 that Tristan is asking for now.
He’s just on the early bus is all.
Finally…..it won’t be teams “going on a spending frenzy” as much as it will be players simply making exponentially more which will force teams into spending.
ouch
I have never heard or read any plans to let Mozgov walk and honestly you have no idea what Mozgov will be offered. Now will Mozgov earn a raise? Absolutely. Why? Because he is worth more to the Cavaliers in what he can bring the team then Tristan Thompson. So I would pay Mozgov before Thompson everyday any day and it has nothing to do with age.
Now with regards to the players you cited who you think are on par with Thompson I completely disagree with Noah but especially Ibaka. Both of them should and most likely will be paid more then Thompson. As for the rest the only guy I see who I would statistically compare to Thompson is Bogut. I have to check Favors but I want to say he has recorded far and away superior offensive numbers then Thompson.
As long as we’re on this comparing players. Thompson by virtue of declining 5 years $80M has said that’s not enough and that he is more comparable to the likes of Draymond Green most specifically and or LeMarcus Aldridge. We all know Thompson doesn’t come close to Aldridge and honestly if you look at the whole season from a year ago and not just the playoffs he doesn’t even come close to Green. Btw for the record I advocated drafting Draymond Green out of MSU even though I am not a real big fan of his now.
As for the bus unless the Cavs give in and reward him generously locking themselves into a 5 year deal Thompson has a better chance of being under the bus then on it. Unless the bus is headed to Toronto.
P.S. If this is such a no brainer which you seem to think then why haven’t the Cavaliers just rolled over and said “Ok TT here’s every $$$ you wanted!” I mean after all like you seem to be implying 5 years $94M is a bargain.
Sorry, I stopped reading after you said you would pay Moz over Tristan.
But to follow up with your PS – why would the Cavaliers just roll over and say “Yes Tristan in fact let’s make it an even 5 / $100 just to make you happy’?
As in all business negotiations it’s a staring contest.
….oh wait…..I glanced quick and saw you think Noah has more basketball value that Tristan. Get some sleep Sham, you’re fingers have commented too much today.
Great response…no seriously…I mean it!
LAST WORD.
