Suppose the Browns didn’t make any trades in the 2011 draft

September 2, 2015In years past, Nike’s “What the?” series has taken bits a pieces of other sneakers from said athlete—LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant—and combined them in to one, glorious, incredibly loud sneaker. Last year’s “What the?” LeBron (the 11) included eight different product design elements from past signature shoes, including 20 different graphics and color choices. There were some MVP nods, there were some “fruity pebble” hints, and even some graffiti Hyperposite. The entire shoe was beautifully constructed, with all of the elements being so different, yet working together so well.
This time around, James’ “What the?” shoe takes a bit of a turn, dialing up the detail and paying homage to some of Nike’s greatest athletes who came before him: Michael Jordan, Bo Jackson and Andre Aggasi.
The bright and bombastic sneaker has an eye-popping “23” inscribed on the outside of the right shoe, an obvious hat tip to the G.O.A.T. The outside of the left forefoot is laced with Hot Lava and black speckles, reminiscent of Aggasi’s Air Tech Challenge. The saw-toothed notches in the left pull tab are an obvious nod to Nike’s Cortez running shoe. Pops of 3M will allow portions of the shoe to glow under light, an all-white Zoom Air heel gives way to various heel-plate designs (both ATC and Jordan 11) while James’s signature and dunkman logo grace each tongue.
The shoe was set to release on Saturday, September 5 and be retail priced at $250, but several outlets are reporting that this may not happen due to a lack of information from Nike. Last season’s “What the?” LeBron sold out in minutes. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
