Justin Gilbert talks about surprise “move to offense”

October 10, 2015Second-year guard Joe Harris has struggled through the Cavs first two preseason games, but he is not in danger of being cut, according to NEOMG’s Chris Haynes. The former Virginia and now Cleveland Cavalier is on a cheap, guaranteed contract. Given all dollars that the Cavs are shelling out, it seems that Joe ain’t going anywhere.
From Haynes:
Harris’ salary for this upcoming season is guaranteed at $845,059. The second-year guard is a lock to remain on the squad, team officials insist.
The 2016-17 season is a team option the club holds on his rookie-scale contract. It’s set at an income of $980,431.
Barring a trade or something catastrophic occurring, the Cavaliers have every intention of picking up his third-year option, sources informed Northeast Ohio Media Group.
Harris, who turned 24 in September, shot a combined 3-of-10 in the Cavs preseason games against the Atlanta Hawks and Philadelphia 76ers. Combo guard Jared Cunningham, meanwhile, turned heads with a 31-point outing against the Sixers, leading some to wonder if Harris’ roster spot could be in danger. It appears that it is not.
There isn’t much wiggle room on the Cavs’ 15-man roster. Thirteen spots are occupied, including Harris and excluding, for now, holdout Tristan Thompson.1 Assuming Thompson signs at some point, that means all of the other Cavs in camp — Austin Daye, Jared Cunningham, Quinn Cook, D.J. Stephens, Nick Minnerath, Dionte Christmas and Chris Johnson — are fighting for one spot.
