For the first time in the long, storied history of the scarlet and gray football program at the Ohio State University, the Buckeyes are set to wear black uniforms for their primetime matchup against the Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday night. Last Saturday, Nike made it official—the new look will be black from head to toe (including their helmet), along with the traditional, somewhat brighter scarlet and gray stripes and numbers with bright green buckeye leaves on the helmets.

While the players will be in donning black on the field, head coach Urban Meyer has also called for a first-ever blackout at Ohio Stadium in what he likes to call “Dark Night in the Shoe“.
For the past few seasons, Ohio State has worn a special Nike Pro Combat jersey for one game per season, but the alternate jersey has never been black until now.
Although traditionalists may not like the change, it was a long time coming. Whether it is for recruiting, giving the Buckeyes a new look, or purely for Nike to make a profit off jersey sales, the first-ever black jerseys for Ohio State and a blacked out Ohio Stadium could be quite a spectacle Saturday night.
Hopefully the scarlet and gray (and black) will play as well as they look in Saturday night’s primetime matchup against the Nittany Lions.

Can’t express how disappointed I am by this. Don’t make more of State Penn than they are. Just show up, wear your uniform, and send the Nittany Lions back to PA with their tails between their legs.
And by the way, 108,000 white people cannot pull off a “blackout.” It never works. It will just look like 108,000 white people wearing black shirts.
Nope. Just…nope. When you have one of the best unis in the sport, this is beyond unnecessary.
Well, if they paint their faces too, then Jason Whitlock might show up.
They look sharp. If it was the Ohio State University at Amherst, then why not.
But, those uniforms are not for The Ohio State University. Especially given “including their helmet.” Ugh.
I don’t get it, but uptick, anyway.
I will say this, though. I think Nike has, thus far, done a pretty good job with OSU’s annual nod to trendy crap. I’m hopeful (but still pouting – which is funny, because I don’t care if the Browns trot out in flip flops and pork pie caps; it seems my hypocrisy knows no bounds).
I stand by the looking sharp angle. I believe they do. They just are not a uniform for the Buckeyes. Put those on NC State (w/ obvious modifications), and I’d love them.
There are some who believe you can paint your face any color for any reason other than one particular color because it would make you a racist.
Really Really Really wished they had gone just black/gray/white with these.

This game is a huge recruiting night for them, so it’s not so much that it’s Penn State as it is… “HEY KID, THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO GO” show off night.
I understand that. I guess I’m just too old to appreciate it. It just seems like a move of desperation to me. Penn State? Really? Blah. Are we not the defending UNDISPUTED NATIONAL CHAMPIONS? What more do we need?

When I was their age, we didn’t have “shoulder pads.” We just shoved a bunch of toilet paper (which we also didn’t have) in our shirts. Helmets? Bah. Duct tape over bubble wrap. That’s it.
I mean at least the Cavs aren’t wearing jerseys with sleeves this year.

Although, most widely known by State University of Ohio, helmet stickers didn’t actually originate there.

we didn’t even have water when i was their age. I’m not talking about water breaks – i mean water. it wasn’t invented yet.
The helmet is the worst part. I hesitate to say all changes to the Buckeyes look are bad/should be avoided after how much I liked what we wore in the NCG, but that was also far more subtle than what Nike generally does with these Pro Combat looks. It goes back to my issue with the changes they made for the Browns: Simple, classic looks don’t need to be changed.
Hideous. Honestly I’d be happy if the Cavs would just finally settle on a consistent look/color scheme. Seems like they can’t go two years without something changing.
