Impressions from Cavs-Hawks in Cincinnati
October 8, 2015Maybe I’m wrong about the Indians
October 8, 2015In his first game as a Cleveland Cavalier, guard-forward Richard Jefferson decided to make a statement on Wednesday night against the Atlanta Hawks at Xavier University. With less than 13 seconds left in the third quarter of the contest, a slicing Jefferson received a pass from teammate Anderson Varejao and, as any 35-year-old would do, elevated as if he was still an Arizona Wildcat, completely destroying the 7-foot-3-inch center who was waiting in the paint.
Jefferson had spent the majority of the evening working in an out of the Cavaliers’ offense with the reserve unit, but undeniably took advantage of his opportunity despite the Hawks’ rookie center Walter Tavares being considerably younger and bigger.
The dunk was enough to not just make highlight reels across the country, it completely electrified the Cavaliers’ bench who could not wait to mob the veteran swingman after the play.
“I thought it was great,” said LeBron James. “He keeps talking about how old he is and things of that nature. We keep joking with each other about how old both of us are and that was definitely some spring still left in that body of his. It was a great finish.”
Adding to the mix was J.R. Smith, a player who has had his fair share of highlight-making dunks.
“That’s my man,” said Smith of Jefferson. “I like that. Especially on a 7-foot-8 dude. I don’t know how tall he is, but he’s tall as hell.”
“Honestly, when I cut backdoor, it was more of I jumped and I didn’t even know who it was,” Jefferson said following the game. Judging by the image above, Jefferson could soon identify the rookie by his dental records.
