December 15, 2015For the first time since the Cleveland Browns decided not to re-sign kicker Phil Dawson, the San Francisco 49ers kicker returned to the city where his career began: Cleveland.
In what was an emotional return to the Dawg Pound for Dawson, one that included a video tribute both during pregame and in the first quarter, the 40-year-old couldn’t hold back his love for the team and city he started his first 14 years of his NFL career with. In an interview with cleveland.com’s Tom Reed, the former Browns kicker almost couldn’t hold back the tears.
“I figured after the little deal they did in pregame that was going to be it,” [Dawson] said. “So I kind of exhaled and was trying to find my rhythm. Then, all of a sudden, boom. I’m trying not to break down on the sideline and zero in on kicking and paying attention to the wind. It was just hard to find that balance today”
“I don’t think I have words to do it justice. I want to thank the Browns organization for doing that and the fans for making it so special.”
Although his new team, the 49ers, lost to the Browns on Sunday, the University of Texas product admitted that Sunday was more about the memory of returning to Cleveland and the standing ovation he was given more than the result of the game.
“I told people, ‘When I’m an old man and my memory’s starting to fade I hope the good Lord lets me remember today because it’s about as good as it gets,'” Dawson said.
If only a crack, Dawson seemed to have left the door open for a return to the Browns and a chance to end his career where it began. When asked about potentially returning to Cleveland, Dawson responded, “I can’t answer that right now…But it’s a special, special place and I love it.”
So far in 2015, Dawson has made 19-of-20 field goal attempts and 15-of-16 extra-point attempts. In his career, he has made 381-of-450 field goals. He holds the record for field goals made in Browns history (305) and is second all-time in scoring (1,271 points). While he will be a free agent at the end of the 2015-16 season, could we possibly see Dawson return (and retire) with the team he started his NFL career with? I guess we will just have to wait and see.

bernie kosar left the browns only needing 1-2 more seasons to be the leader in most browns passing categories … same with dawson , he only needed one more season to overtake lou groza as the browns all-time leading scorer.
we all love phil … but do we really bring him back ? coons has actually been good & would be even better if the knuckleheads up front on the FG unit could actually block.
Bring the guy back for a victory lap (well, maybe more an “occasional victory mixed with numerous unsightly losses” lap). He’s still better than most everyone else at his position.
Phil Dawson would have not only performed the special teams blocking but would have also kicked the ball (from 60 yards plus).
We would have had 10 win seasons for the past few years if we would have had Phil Dawson.
Also, when he spits on the sidelines, flowers grow in those spots. Beautiful flowers.
Facts.
Yeah, if we only had kept Phil and Lawrence Vickers, the drought would have ended by now. Sigh.
If it’s the difference between bringing Phil back or drafting a #1 WR in the first round, I say . . .
