All in on Paul DePodesta: While We’re Waiting…
January 6, 2016Thoughts after the Cleveland Browns hiring of Paul DePodesta
January 6, 2016Along with Teryl Austin, Adam Gase, and Doug Marrone, the Cleveland Browns have another four potential head coaches who will interview for the job, most likely this week or next: Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson and defensive coordinator Paul Guenther, Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, and Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. This news comes via cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.
Since each of these candidates’ teams is in the playoffs, their interview availability could be different than that for the previously named candidates.
A former Oakland Raiders head coach, the 50-year-old Jackson has 15 years of experience coaching in the NFL. He has been with Cincinnati for the past six seasons, and has been the Bengals offensive coordinator for the past two. Led by quarterback Andy Dalton, the Bengals offense averaged 26.2 points per game, sixth-best in the league.
Guenther has been with the Bengals for 11 years and has been in the NFL for 13 total. Cincinnati allowed the second-fewest points per game this season (17.4 points) and ranked seventh in rushing defense, allowing 92.3 yards per game.
McDermott has been Carolina’s defensive coordinator for the past five seasons. He has made it known that he wants to be Philadelphia’s head coach, as he started his career with the Eagles. McDermott’s Panthers ranked second in scoring defense (19.3 points) this season and led the league with 39 takeaways. With the Panthers having a bye in the first round of the playoffs, Jimmy Haslam and company will fly to Charlotte on Thursday to interview McDermott.
Patricia has been with New England since 2004. Under his leadership, the Patriots defense finished 10th in points allowed this season, giving up 19.7 points per game. They also allowed 339.4 total yards per game (ninth) and 98.8 rushing yards per game (ninth). If the Browns do not interview him this week — while the Pats are on a bye — they will have to wait until after the playoffs have concluded.
If the Browns wind up hiring Patricia, it will be the third time since 2005 that Cleveland has hired one of Bill Belichick’s defensive coordinators, with the two previous coaches being Romeo Crennel (2005-08) and Eric Mangini (2009-10).
Whoever the Browns decide to hire following this array of interviews will be part of the committee to hire a general manager as well.

This is somewhat exciting, even though I still believe Jackson (my personal preference) will end up elsewhere. This is the first I’ve seen of McDermott’s stated preference for Philly, which lessens a bit my desire to make him the guy: I want a HC who is fully focused here, not looking out of the corner of his eye at the girl he’d rather be with the whole time. I don’t know near enough of Guenther to be able to have a reasonable opinion of him, though I have liked what the Bengals defense has done in recent years, and I like defensive-minded coaches (yes, even after our recent arrangement). And after what we’ve seen (frequently firsthand) over the years from Disciples of Belichick, I’ll take a hard pass on Patricia. Seems to me that guys coming out of New England are clearly more a product of that organization than anything else.
At this point I’m hoping they steal the Harvard football head coach just to continue and amplify the absurdity of the last few days
Wait they are serious about Gase? Didn’t he run away from the Browns last time or was that Chip?
I’m with you on Patricia. How many Belichick disciples have to fail miserably at various places without him for the rest of the league to get the hint?
Crennell
Weis
Mangini
McDaniels
Pioli
Bill O’Brien is the only one who hasn’t flamed out entirely, but Houston hasn’t exactly been lighting it up, playoffs or not (they won arguably the worst division in the league).
Eh, no worries…I’m totally confident that Sweet Dee Haslam will make the right call here.
All the more reason to look to add people who have have created their own success. For me that means proven NFL people whether it’s the HC or GM. Clearly Haslam disagrees which means the next two BIG hirings will undoubtedly be first timers. First time HC and first time GM which will explain why they took the job in the first place. Despite whatever you want to label Haslem’s new model the result will be the same thing that has haunted this organization the past 17 years: people in positions they are not qualified to be in which includes the owner.
Now of course just like all the times in the past that this time could be different. This could be the one time when all of this finally comes together and we will all finally get to see an actual NFL organization being built from the ground up. But I just don’t see it. But I hope I’m wrong.
It’s not just her tho…Jimmy, Korn Ferry dude and Sashi will all be at the table too.
Can you imagine being someone who is interviewed by this group? Better yet can you imagine anyone with any real credentials or resume being interviewed by these people? Me either. That’s why they have already, by default, limited the potentials for hirings in two of the most critical positions in a sports organization: head coach and general manager.
I wonder if they asked DePodesta what he thought about this setup? I’m guessing no.
MIT!
It was Gase. Chip was the guy who led them on for an additional free dinner.
Patricia, the rocket scientist, seems the obvious choice.
i thought josh mcdaniel would’ve been another candidate …
what ?? … no josh mcdaniel !?!?
I think I saw the grandfather of the guy on the right in a movie recently…

He snuck out the back door like Shanahan did last season.
I keep seeing you harp on this argument, and I honestly don’t know what’s so bad about interviewing with team owners, a guy from a firm your agent has a contract with, and the team’s head cap guy?
To be fair, the quarterbacks in Houston are:

I’d go offensive since he’ll be guiding our new QB
To be fair, Houston blew major opportunities to acquire young talent to be a starting QB. They created a mess and stuck these stiffs in it.
CEO of Yahoo, Marissa Meyer has gone so far as to Support the practice “Work at home” that I have been doing since last year. In this year till now I have earned 88k dollars with my pc, despite the fact that I am a college student. Even newbies can make 38 an hour easily and the average goes up with time. Why not try this.

And I could understand if that’s what they ultimately choose to do. But Kevin O’Connell’s work with the less than inspiring group he had here makes me think that developing a QB can happen just as well with a defensive-minded HC, so long as you have a talented QB coach.
