In the Eye of the Beholder: Cavs-Rockets, Behind the Box Score
January 16, 2016Former Rams fan decides to become a Cleveland Browns fan
January 17, 2016Hue Jackson’s coaching staff is starting to take shape. There was talk of some of Mike Pettine’s assistant coaches being retained — special teams coordinator Chris Tabor will be back for his fifth season — but offensive coordinator John DeFilippo will not be among them. This news comes via ESPN’s Adam Caplan.
#Browns have informed OC John DeFilippo that he has been released from his contract, source said.

DeFilippo leaves after just one year with the Browns. Flip’s offense finished 2015 scoring an average of 17.4 points per game, 30th in the league. Browns quarterbacks totaled 4,156 yards on 61 percent passing with 20 touchdowns against 12 interceptions. The offense played particularly well early in the season, as the Browns scored 23-plus points in four of their six games. They topped 20 points just three times in the remaining 10 contests.
DeFilippo has two years left on his contract with the Browns; the team will owe him the associated salary unless he lands another gig. Flip has been linked to both the San Francisco 49ers (who have hired Chip Kelly as head coach) and the now-Los Angeles Rams (who are still led by Jeff Fisher).
Along with the news of DeFilippo’s departure is word that Hue Jackson will be calling the plays for the Browns. Jackson has had a hand in plenty of play-calling over the years, having served as offensive coordinator the Cincinnati Bengals as well as the Oakland Raiders, Atlanta Falcons, Washington Redskins, and USC Trojans.

Jackson alluded to the moves in a radio interview. Via cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot:
“Right now in my mind, I don’t really plan on having an offensive coordinator, because I want to reserve that right to call plays,” Jackson said in an interview with Solomon Wilcots and Shannon Sharpe on Sirius XM NFL radio. “That’s something that’s gotten me this job, so it’s something that you’re an expert at. You want to continue to work at that and keep that in your pocket so you can use it to help your team.”
He also spoke of his affinity for play-calling in his introductory press conference with the Browns earlier this week.
I love calling plays. I do, but I’m going to do whatever I think is the right thing for this organization. Obviously, we’re going to look to find the best coaches that we can in the world to come here and coach. If that means Hue Jackson needs to slide over and give someone else that opportunity, then I will, but I know I will always be itching and scratching and wanting to do it because I think I have a pretty good feel of what it takes to be successful in this league.
Jackson interviewed former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton Friday. Hamilton won’t be coming aboard as OC, but could find a spot on the coaching staff as an offensive assistant. Again from MKC:
Jackson interviewed former Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton Friday for a prominent role on the offense, possibly assistant head coach or passing game coordinator.
A head coach calling plays is not unprecedented. Ten NFL coaches did the job last year, with New Orleans’ Sean Payton among the most famous examples. Kyle Shanahan handled such duties for the Browns in 2014, with John DeFilippo taking over this year. The Browns last offensive-minded head coach, Rob Chudzinski, ceded play-calling responsibilities to offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
The last Cleveland head coach to call his own plays? Mr. Charisma himself, Pat Shurmur. Here’s hoping that Hue’s tenure goes a bit better.

Definitely mixed feelings on this one. Flip seemed like a very smart, collaborative offensive mind to have as part of our org. Hue called a pretty spectacular O last year in Cincy. I’m excited to see Hue running the O on game day but I’m sorry they couldn’t find a place for Flip.
Not sure i can handle all this third-person speech stuff.
i feel the same exact way. Sorry to see Flip go but can’t argue with Hue’s success.
Maybe he can land in Tampa, although Koetter is a tough wagon to hitch to.
Makes sense.
Hue called his own plays in Oakland. Im sure he can hack it. It’s common in the NFL. Just once though, it’d be nice if everyone stayed in their lane and proved they could do their job well, before trying to go above and beyond.
I get it from the “I don’t think there’s anyone better to call plays than me, and since Im responsible as the HC, I want the responsibility” angle, but one of our biggest problems since 99 has been ego, and this is more of that.
It is what it is and its not going to change, but I think it’s also at least worth noting.
When I looked at the draft of 8467 dollars, I accept that my friend’s brother was like really creating cash in his free time with his PC. . His aunt’s neighbor has done this for only 10 months and by now repaid the loan on their home and bought a new Car . Look here for details.

Hue’s ass is on the line … i’d be calling my own plays too. you saw how hard it was for packers HC mike mccarthy to give-up the play-calling … i think it lasted a little more than half of the season this year before he took over again.
