January 22, 2016Everything you need to know about Cavs new head coach Tyronn Lue: WFNY FAQs
January 22, 2016What just happened?
Yahoo! basketball reporter Adrian Wojnarowski is famous in internet circles for breaking the most stupefying, earth-shattering news stories in the NBA, often with little warning or preparation. These stories are known as “Woj-bombs,” and Wojnarowski dropped one on Cleveland, Northeast Ohio, and all of America Friday afternoon when he reported that the Cleveland Cavaliers fired coach David Blatt. Brian Windhorst confirmed the news for ESPN.

Since David Blatt’s hiring in 2014, news has always swirled about the coach’s efficacy and long-term viability. Rumors about Blatt’s possible firing hovered over the entirety of the 2014-15 season, especially early. Nevertheless, the Cavaliers assembled themselves for a devastating run in the second half of last season, making the Finals and coming within two games of a championship.
Despite the successful run in the playoffs, there were still intermittent stories of Blatt’s inability to win over the Cavaliers. However, heading into and throughout the 2015-16 season, things seemed to be hunky-dory with Blatt, or about as well as they had ever been. The Cavs entered Friday with a 30-11 record, the best in the Eastern Conference by a few games. They had just defeated the streaking Clippers on Thursday night after a bludgeoning at the hands of the Golden State Warriors — the team that defeated them in the NBA Finals — on Monday night. Whether the Golden State defeat played a crucial role in Blatt’s firing is unclear as of yet.
Wojnarowski reported not long after the firing that Tyronn Lue had been promoted to head coach.

According to Brian Windhorst, LeBron James was not consulted in the decision — but his affection for Lue and disdain for Blatt have always been apparent. So much for a drama-free season, Cavs fans!

UPDATE: Tyronn Lue has agreed to a three-year deal to be coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Woj first reported the contract. Though, if recent history of Cleveland sports is any indication — a three-year deal doesn’t mean much.

what does that mean?
i agree completely.
Could be more moves to come perhaps Love needs to go if he’s so weak mentally I don’t know. Just like the Browns the proof will be in the pudding for the Cavs as well. I just feel right now this team has one huge ego/mentality and that’s not good when you have a team like Golden State doing what it’s doing. Cavs might have best player in the world but Warriors have the best team, best teamwork and best overall image. Oh well.
Sure, he may not be getting the most out of his players, who also have bad body language. He may not have shown the ability to command this team, the players may have never bought in, his rotations may not make sense.
The only problem with all of this is that he never really got the chance to do any of this. From the moment Lebron signed, Lebron was in charge, and Lebron had the final call. Lebron wants all the responsibility except for the part where the leader shoulders the lion’s share of the blame in a loss. That’s all Blatt was on board to do.
I’m not defending Blatt in any way here. He was never asked to actually coach, so it seems useless to try to analyze his coaching. I’m annoyed with the way this team handed all the keys over to Lebron again, and ignores the issues that come along with doing so. Lebron is a great player, but he’s not so great a coach and GM.
On a side note, I find the arguments about a coach’s rotations being baffling, to be baffling themselves. They are purely a results-based response to a process-based question. They are simply “we lost, thus if we did something different we would have won” statement, which is nonsensical.
“I didn’t need to ask them questions, I’ve watched them interact with each other for a very long period of time, under a lot of different circumstances. I KNOW WHAT SOMETHING THAT’S NOT RIGHT LOOKS LIKE.”
–David Griffin
Waiters didn’t fit I never liked his selection quite honestly I don’t see him doing much in OKC either.
Yeah, everyone has seen the gif of Lebron griping to Lue on the bench. We all know that the ultimate decider wasn’t happy with losing, and was ready to make someone else responsible for that. Something not right is a synonym for Lebron is grumpy.
Not sure Blatt is a “decent man”, and – given the golden parachute he’ll sail away from Cleveland on – I wouldn’t waste any time feeling too badly for him.
From a basketball standpoint, this strikes me as a winner’s move. If Blatt’s limitations were imposing a ceiling on the Cavs, and their recent play against Golden State and San Antonio speaks to this more than any leaked anecdote, then moving on from him now is absolutely the right thing to do.
And if it wasn’t Blatt’s limitations, but something else? All we’ve done is create excuses, which is, decidedly, not a winner’s move.
We have, without a doubt, the most talented roster in the league and Blatt wasn’t maximizing it. Would be open to your alternative theories, but that’s what my eyes have told me
We have, without a doubt, less talent than the Spurs or Warriors, even when healthy. We have the third best record in the league, and are on cruise control to the Finals despite Thompson, Smith, Delly, and Jefferson being 3rd – 6th in the team in minutes. This team could bang out 65 wins no problem if healthy. I’m failing to see where Blatt limited them.
Annnnnnnnnd…we officially reach that point of the conversation 🙂

After seeing the press coverage, my message to David Griffin:
http://www.quickmeme.com/img/f9/f9bc4f29394f6b85595178046c34b2b2ba6a3632d6df518d3fd03467c837d0fc.jpg
I got the impression he’s pretty self-confident or has a big set of juevos. Maybe both. Either way I didn’t buy a lot of what he was selling. I think it’s a joke honestly but at least now they (players and management) won’t have Blatt to blame. Lets see what happens. My biggest question is how is this team better? Lue your up.
WHERE IS THIS CHAIR, AND WHY DIDN’T WE HIRE HIM!?!?
I don’t agree often with Steve but I think both the Warriors and Spurs not only have more talent but they have better talent both on and off the court. Perfect examples: JR Smith, Iman Shumpert and Kevin Love. JR Smith acted up last year he should have been allowed to walk away instead he was brought back and he’s had issues this season. Iman Shumpert has just as much off court interests as he does on the court. Kevin Love is starting to give me an impression of a weak minded, soft, whiner who put up stats in Minnesota because he was their sole best option.
I don’t say any of this lightly but right now I feel like a fool for believing in and sticking up for this team like I did. Now I feel like I’m going to take the approach I did with the Browns and that is prove it to me. Right now the Cavaliers are no better today then they were yesterday. Tomorrow they play the Bulls. Lets see if we see any kind of noticable difference. I know one thing this team sure as hell better win it all otherwise who’s next to get sacrificed?
Sounds like this team needs a sports psychologist more then a head coach. Listening to Griffin I think he thinks he’s a psychologist or maybe he should be the head coach. It’s the NBA it’s supposed to be professional not a bunch of babies who need their hands held and be coddled just so they are happy. JR Smith, Kevin Love I’m looking right at you two.
If Lue doesn’t help the Cavs win the championship, both he and David are dead men. and the fans will wonder what would have happened if we had kept David Blatt
I just am amazed at hearing Griffin say that victories weren’t being enjoyed and all the rest of the psychological mumbo jumbo. For me it sounds like a bunch of self-indulgent, entitled, whiners who rather then take responsibility chose to put it somewhere else on someone else. Golden State is not only a more talented team but for me it’s pretty clear they are emotionally and mentally superior as well.
Emotionally and mentally superior? I would say yes. More talented? Hard to say. I could easily see the Cavs having the best offense and defense this year, If everyone got their act together and are on the same page. We’ll see if Lue can turn things around.
I think top to bottom Golden State is more talented I’ve always thought that even as a Cavs fan. Their players can do more. Cavs have to many guys who can do only certain things this is where match-ups come in to play. I just don’t see how Lue changes any of it. I would expect this team to probably play hard but believe me I’ll be watching to see what is different as far as actual game play.
Indeed!
So now who coaches the East in the All-Star game??
LeBron!

This post achieves a rare and impressive combination of overgeneralization and overreaction ;). That said, I agree with your last point: if Blatt’s handling of the team was so roundly disliked, we should expect to see a noticeable difference in demeanor and performance almost immediately. I look forward to tonight’s game and just hope the east coast blizzard doesn’t knock out my cable!
Just two stories I’ve seen today I’d read the one about the players boycotting that horrible night in Portland if I was you. Overgeneralization I disagree. Overreaction perhaps but I’m more then annoyed. This is the kind of stuff good teams and good organizations who find themselves in first place in their conference don’t deal with yet for the Cavs and sports in general in Cleveland it continually seems to occur. It all traces back to ownership. No wonder it’s been over 50 years since a professional sports team won a championship in Cleveland just look at the people who own these teams.

The “boycott” appears to be in response to Blatt’s failures to make strategic decisions without properly communicating with the team and with individual players. I find this to be a pretty fundamental failure from a coach. There is a major ego issue with Blatt, and he is a brazen, arrogant guy with a chip on his shoulder; this has been problematic since day 1, although the winning has helped attenuate the problem. Certainly the players bear some responsibility, but to place it all on them and declare the locker room full of malcontents…that’s a serious oversimplification of the problem. David Griffin, who is much closer to all of this than we are, read his players and his coach, and made a rational decision that will lift the ceiling Blatt’s limitations have imposed on the team.
A few thoughts:
1. I think there are only 1-2 coaches in the NBA that considerably make their teams better. The rest are essentially babysitters for huge egos. The “true NBA coach” notion will die with Pops (which is a sad whole other argument I won’t go into). That said, you have to play the cards your dealt, and for us that means placating to our star players and making them happy to the point they exert max effort. It appears that Blatt had lost the Big 3 and Lue is respected, so this move had to happen.
2. LeBron is not the problem. Does anyone remember the Finals last year?? The guy played his heart out for the team. I don’t even like the guy, but I respected the hell out of his effort and we all know he’ll be geared up for the playoffs this year too, like (almost) always. If anything, he could probably improve as the team’s leader by finding a way to set the tone for the rest of the players, who I believe are super soft and emotionally fragile. Asking him to shoulder more of the blame is just going to create a media circus about LeBron’s psyche, that he isn’t happy in Cleveland, etc. Don’t make him answer questions about how he is responsible for the loss. It would be a huge distraction.
More like a “mutiny” but whatever you label it this reflects more on the players then the coach. Blatt really needed to explain why he didn’t play guys BEFORE not playing them? Blatt needed to consult with the players strategy? Blatt needed to take a vote? Come on it’s called professional for a reason. But regardless who hired Blatt? The same people who hired Mike Brown then fired him only to rehire him and fire him a year later. This speaks to the organization as a whole. Has nothing to do with Blatt. Unfortunately a hard lesson needs to be learned and I think it’s coming.
If your boss made major decisions that affected you without telling you, and repeatedly gave preferential treatment to higher compensated workers, would it be something you’d just let roll off your back? Why would an NBA locker room be any different than your workplace?
Blatt was not the right guy to maximize the immense talent on the roster, and it’s better that change be effected now rather than after getting swept by the Warriors in June. Just like last year, the Cavs now have half a season to gel with new pieces and peak later this spring, when it matters. I’m excited to see how they respond to adversity – this will be the truest sense of their “professionalism”.
I’ve never worked anywhere I could openly question a boss let alone stop working or work inefficiently no. And if I did it probably impacted me and my co-workers more which is why I’d never think to do it. Horrible comparison.
They will reap what they have sewn and personally I hope they get everything they have coming. You don’t do things like this in this manner. It’s really a shame but to bad.
What new pieces it’s the same team it was two days ago? And what adversity? They were more of a team when Irving and Love were gone in the playoffs. Says something doesn’t it? Oh well. Good luck.
lol, ok. I think you’re a little too emotional about this right now. Let’s see where things are in a couple weeks, shall we?
Probably but I’ll never look at this “team” the same way. Heck I gave the Cavs the benefit of the doubt after the Browns season but the truth is winning organizations don’t do things like they have and this was just the latest example. I am taking a break I have the Pats game tomorrow. We’ll see how that goes as for the Cavs, whatever.
re his decency, don’t know how he related to players and staff, but I met him once, have a few friends who also met him once or twice. Our separate impressions were unanimous. Thoroughly decent.
Re your second point, it’s basically the same as mine. If it works it was the right thing. If it doesn’t it might just show that LeBron wants to win one here but on his terms, not on Riley’s or Wade’s or Blatt’s. I still believe that if Kyrie and Love were available in last year’s Finals we’d have that trophy and it’s very likely Blatt would still be coaching.
