Everything you need to know about Hue Jackson: WFNY FAQs
January 14, 2016Hue only live twice, Mr. Jackson
January 14, 2016While Cleveland Browns new head coach Hue Jackson continues to field questions about Johnny Manziel, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. believes that media and fans alike may be trying to divide by zero. In his first mock draft of the 2016 season, Kiper has the Browns using the No. 2 pick on California quarterback Jared Goff, giving the team their next quarterback of the future and one who will be the hallmark of Jackson’s tenure with the team.
2. Cleveland Browns
Jared Goff, QB, Cal
It goes without saying the Browns need to take a hard look at quarterbacks, and Hue Jackson should have the chance to start fresh with someone other than Johnny Manziel. Goff has tremendous talent and upside. He’s shown off an NFL arm since he arrived at Cal, and has a great mind for the game. He’s also shown how resilient he can be, growing with and leading that team at Cal, which would be a great trait in Cleveland.
The Browns quarterback situation this past year included Manziel, veteran player-coach Josh McCown, and former Rams QB Austin Davis. Jackson’s interview with the Browns reportedly included a discussion about the much-discussed position with Mike Garafolo and ESPN both reporting that the new head coach wants to move on from Manziel, and the team is down with the cause.
For those wondering about Ohio State’s Joey Bosa, Kiper has him going No. 1 to Tennesseeâ”Getting the best defensive lineman in any draft really transcends need,” he writes. On the rest of the Ohio State front, Kiper has Eli Apple joining Richard Sherman and company in Seattle (No. 26) while Ezekiel Elliott joins Gary Kubiak and the top-seeded Denver Broncos.
Ole Miss wide receiver LaQuan Treadwell is currently pegged to be joining the San Francisco 49ers at No. 7, but notes that the Niners could easily try to address quarterback as well. Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch, the other quarterback considered for the Browns at No. 2, is currently listed at No. 15 to the St. Louisâer, Los AngelesâRams. For those hoping that Carson Wentz would fall to No. 32 (the Browns’ second pick), you’re going to be disappointed. Kiper has him going to Houston at No. 22.

This is my biggest issue with Lynch: system. We’ve seen this time and time again the NFL is littered with QB failures who came from a run and gun college system.
Treadwell is a beast the thought of him with Gordon is mouth watering. The problem is who will get them the ball. I’m keeping McCown regardless of whether or not a QB is drafted. But like you said they still need a QB.
Goff is a big boy himself he’s just not SF tall.
Haiku showdown!
Give me Dave Pozzuoli or give me death.
Not me. He’s my third QB behind McCown and Davis. That’s right you heard me third QB. He’s in every QB meeting possible, he’s studying film, he’s holding a clipboard on the sideline while listening to the play calls. His first professional season is a red shirt in other words. The Cleveland Browns won’t be going anywhere next season. Let the kid learn. The following season he graduates a level.
Shaun Rogers?
They need minimum of 5 first round picks. Probably more.
I disagree. Bosa will have little help which means he’ll be double teamed easily. I want to see if his game translates to the pros. He’s not a JJ Watt. He’s very good but he disappeared a lot this past season largely because offensive lines could key on him. That’s just opinion here’s a fact: if Bosa is the selection the defense needs to immediately become a 4-3 with Shelton moving inside. Now you need another DT as well as an opposing DE. Even more important you need LBs. LBs who can travel, cover, make plays in space. Browns have almost none of those. This means if you take Bosa you probably need to use at least 2 more additional picks on defensive players. You can’t do what they did with Shelton. He couldn’t single handedly help the defense or the horrible rush defense because he had no help largely from LBs in back of him.
But again, just my opinion.
i would also start goff right away (see carr, winston & mariota) … this is not your father’s nfl any more … the days of bringing a guy along slowly , ala aaron rodgers , pretty much don’t exist any more.
the best way to learn is to play.
I’m keeping/convincing Thomas to stay along with Mack (long shot) and Schwartz but I’m trading Haden. He’s been here to long. He’s gotten completely to comfortable. And most importantly he’s getting hurt more and playing less.
hi TRS … see my comment just above. start him right away .
I saw it and I completely disagree. You learn how to lose when you are on a bad team. Good teams can obviously afford to let a QB sit and learn a la GB and NWE but I honestly believe for the long term, not the immediate, having him sit, listen and learn is the more prudent way to go.
fair enough … but carr , mariota & winston all played on bad teams that are getting better … and they all have experience now. i recall peyton manning starting immediately his rookie year & he led the league in int’s , but the experience of actually playing paid-off.
i guess that will be up to hue & his philosophy on rookie QB’s.
I think a lot of this will depend on both Goff as well as the Browns coaching staff. Obviously, hopefully, they’ll know more then us. I’m just giving my opinion based on the rest of the team and all of the change that will surround it. I’m also basing it on needing to see and read more about Goff. I didn’t see him play a lot. He’s had some ups and some downs he’s still young and raw. Hopefully the analytics will address the measurables while Hue and his staff deal with the mental side.
Just think had you know who not been such a burning mass of dung and Gordon returned you could possibly look at adding a weapon like Treadwell. That would have given the offense 2 amazing WRs, a Pro Bowl TE, a third down back in Duke and a backup in Crowell. But nope.
“but big-time players play big in the big games.”
Johnny Manziel agrees with this.
Jacob Rosen would like to see you in his office. đ
He’ll never be big!
HE BEAT ALABAMA.
So did Cardale Jones!
I see Haden reenergized by Horton coming back, or anyone other than O’neil and Pettine… It will be like a new team… Joe barely got to experience all of the color combinations, so new uni too!
And studies have shown that concussions are not contagious, he will be fine.
Kind of a chicken or egg situation… If Gordon returns to form and lasts the entire season, with Treadwell on the other side and Gary at TE, Pryor could move to qb and be successful… Or do you get the guy in the middle to get the ball to Gordon and Gary, and Pryor??? How many picks do we have? 30??

In your scenario, he will be starting week 3 (McCown out game 1, Austin is terrible in game 2, in comes the Goffinator)
Why do we want to keep NOT drafting the best player available… Sure Goff might help us more this year but if we take a top prospect, or trade back it will look soooo much better in 3 years than when we are drafting Goff’s replacement.
IMO we should get trades together in case we either don’t like Bosa or Tennessee takes him.
Id rather be bad 2 years and make the playoffs year 3 with a rookie QB(and perhaps young pro-bowl players? !!!) than have two 8-8 seasons, make a splashy trade, and collapse to 4-12
I accounted for this possibility both his jock and his helmet will not be available for use on game day. Pryor stay ready.
No disrepsect but I dont want QBs that cannot make all the throws. Murray is Colt McCoy.
With as terrible as the line and WRs are it wont matter who they pick. Just once I want to see them focus on building the team from the linemen out instead of obsessing about QB. Besides, they missed their chances to draft stars i.e. Wilson, Carr, (maybe) Bridgewater
Hackenberg in Rd 2 seems like a smarter play.
hi CAD … is the O-line as bad as some are making it out to be ? i know the numbers will show we gave up a lot of sacks & did not run the ball well … but they did pass protect okay. thomas & mack made the pro-bowl , schwartz actually had a good year & bitonio can play better than he did this year.
now , if we can’t get mack & schwartz to stay , we may have a problem.
Pass protection was adequate but they were what, 31st in rushing? And neither Thomas or Mack should be in the Pro Bowl, they both got in on name alone. Joe Thomas has been slipping for 2 years and Mack looked noticeably less than 100% for most of the season. The WRs are complete trash though, a lot of the sacks were coverage sacks because they cant get open and theres no one that scares a defense except maaaaaaaaybe Benjamin and thats a stretch. Im just sick of the obsessing over QB when theres literally no part of the team you can look at and say they’re set there
