Indians sign RH reliever Tommy Hunter to one-year deal

February 13, 2016Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin has stated that the team isn’t shopping power forward Kevin Love, but the New York Daily News has heard otherwise. According to Knicks beat reporter Frank Isola, the Cavaliers were involved in talks between New York and the Boston Celtics that would have sent Love to Boston, picks and center Timofey Mozgov to New York, while sending perennial All-Star forward (and friend of LeBron James) Carmelo Anthony to Cleveland.
The only problem? Melo likes New York and would not, at least at this point, waive his no-trade clause. Here’s Isola:
The Daily News has learned that the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers have discussed a blockbuster trade centered around Kevin Love. There were very preliminary discussions about expanding the deal to include the Knicks and Anthony, who would have to waive his no-trade clause in order to facilitate a deal to the Cavs.
The Knicks would receive draft picks and players in return. One of those players is believed to be Timofey Mozgov, who five years ago was traded by the Knicks to Denver in the Anthony deal.
Those talks have not progressed. Plus Anthony reiterated on Friday that he has no plans to seek a trade. …
“Not yet. I’m pretty sure I’ll have that conversation with myself and my family and my team,” he said. “But it’s not a conversation for right now.”
Anthony is in a weird predicament with his current situation as he yearns to play alongside stars, but either has to be traded for them, or has been a part of a Knicks organization that has spent wildly on pieces that didn’t quite fit said mold. The team currently has one of the most talked about rookies in the league in Kristaps Porzingas, but the team is still 23-32 despite his surprising start.
On Friday, Melo spoke at length about fantasies that involved him playing with some of the games best—”The older they get…you realize you just can’t do it all by yourself.” The Knicks traded for Anthony in 2011 (in a deal which included Cleveland’s Mozgov) and signed him to a record $125 million contract in 2014. Said contract, however, has handcuffed the organization, one that seems unwilling to wait for the impending bump in the salary cap.
Love, meanwhile, has long been a target of the Boston Celtics, but signed a maximum contract with the Cavaliers this past offseason. Despite putting up numbers that had him on the fringe of joining Anthony and James in Toronto for All-Star weekend, he continues to be in the middle of trade rumors due to the Cavaliers’ perceived inability to get him consistently involved on the offensive end. Acquiring Anthony would conceivably move James to the power forward spot, allowing the Cavaliers to play small with Tristan Thompson then getting the bulk of the team’s minutes at center.

So he would rather lose in New York? Not sure I would like that deal either.
I don’t think I like that deal. Anthony is a bigger star than Love but I’m not sure he’s a better fit, despite the fact that Love hasn’t felt like the best ever fit. Anthony can fill it up, but that’s not exactly what we’re lacking, and he’s not particularly efficient about it. Love is shooting better from three, has a higher eFG% and TS%, has better box plus/minus, better offensive AND defensive ratings per 100 possessions, substantially lower usage rate, is four years younger, and under contract for two years longer. Melo has more offensive firepower in his bag of tricks, but Love is more efficient and effective in a 3rd option role. I don’t think we need another guy who is used to taking 18 shots per game, and it would certainly narrow the window of opportunity.
That said, the term “have had discussions about” means nothing, as we well know. NBA GM’s have discussions about all kinds of crazy things, like swapping Kobe and Lebron, for example. I’m sure Griffin is exploring every possibility.
Another toilet rumor. Nothing to see here guys and gals.
If we can get EVERY 1st round pick +swap rights with Boston for the maximum 7 years(including those Brooklyn picks), I would be ok with it.
I agree this would be dumb. I don’t know who we could go out and get to make an impact. Possibly someone for Mosgov, but we don’t need to cut down minutes of JR or opportunities by Kyrie.
I get that Melo is a great player (albeit now older and unlikely to be elite through his contract), but from a fit perspective for the Cavs this doesn’t seem to pass the sniff test. If Griffin chases this he’s panicking and just throwing sh*t at the wall…
I like a Love/Irving core with a gracefully aging Lebron for the next 6 years. Let’s not screw this up…
Boston and New York in panic mode. So… like always, let’s pick what we want from Cleveland, create crap stories like “Cleveland discusses…” deal and then the moron GMs in Boston and NY finally get the idea. B. S.
Not sure why the Cavs would want to give up 2 big men for a high-usage wing, helping the Celtics out big time, too.
