Todd McShay has Browns taking Jared Goff in Mock Draft 2.0
February 5, 2016For Johnny Manziel, football must become secondary
February 5, 2016In the wake of the latest allegations surrounding Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel, the player’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, has released a statement that announces the termination of the professional relationship between the two parties.
It is with deep regret that, after several emotional and very personal discussions with his family, his doctors, and my client himself, I have made the decision to terminate my professional relationship with Johnny Manziel.
Though I will remain a friend and Johnny supporter, and he knows I have worked tirelessly to arrange a number of professional options for him to continue to pursue, it has become painfully obvious that his future rests solely in his own hands. His family and I have gone to great lengths to outline the steps we feel he must take to get his life in order. Accountability is the foundation of any relationship, and without it, the function of my work is counterproductive.
I truly wish the best for Johnny and sincerely hope he can, and will, find the kind of peace and happiness he deserves.
Manziel was recently tied to allegations that involved domestic abuse, drug use, and threats of suicide. These latest items are merely the last in a long line of off-field issues that have plagued the quarterback since entering the league two years ago.
While the “painfully obvious” adjective sticks out, Burkhardt is simply the latest of Manziel-linked individuals to attempt to help with the former first-round draft choice, but find themselves without many other options but to sever ties. Earlier this offseason, LRMR announced that they have ended their relationship with Manziel; Nike followed this news by saying they were “on the fence.” It appears that the final link, the Cleveland Browns, are merely waiting for league rules to let them do the same.
In what may be the most chilling quote to come out of this entire saga, Manziel’s father, Paul, told the Dallas Morning News that if his son doesn’t get help, “he won’t live to see his 24th birthday.” The paper claims the family has tried to admit Manziel to rehab in the last week, but their son has declined. Paul Manziel is also upset that his son was allowed to walk away from the Denton County Sherriff officer despite Johnny being believed to have been to be suicidal.

well, Im sure here comes the cascade of “we need to get this kid help”. I call BS. People have been trying to help him for a while. His parents. His coaches. His agents.
Until Johnny wants to get help, it doesnt matter. Step one is admitting theres a problem. Until then, all the postulating and hand wringing in the world wont help. I dont feel sorry for him, Im not concerned for him, and its all his fault. I hope he fixes himself up, for his own sake, but thats about it for concern from the “Fnmloans” household
Well, I guess we can all officially put to bed the theories that Manziel is just being a regular kid and the media is out to get him. With that said, I really do hope on a personal level that he can find a purpose in his life and make some goals for himself.
One might suspect this is nearing bottom for the Duce. Besides his parents, who else is left sticking by this kid?
One might also suspect that this isn’t even close to the bottom, unforch.
Between the agent’s mention of “family, his doctors….” and Manziel’s dad being quoted in another article saying “We’re trying to get our son better”, I’m starting to wonder if his issues are more mental health than substance abuse. Yes, the later has been an issue. That’s undeniable. But reading between the lines of these comments and yesterday’s police report with its curious redactions, it looks like drugs and alcohol might be symptoms of the problem rather than the cause.
friends until the $$$ runs out. Which probably wont be for a few years.
I dunno, gambling in Las Vegas is a very easy way to lose a ton of money quickly.
That is sadly more likely.
To me, it sounds like the classic stage of denial. “I don’t have a problem. Things get a little out of hand sometimes, but there are other people who are much worse. I’m having fun and I don’t want to stop having fun.” That sort of thing.
I think I was the biggest Manziel fan here, but this does end it for me. Do I think he can get his life together? Sure, but as a Cleveland Brown in the next 2-4 years, no. I think he will be out of the league for a year and this will be his wake-up call (or he will never wake up). I am unsure on drafting Goff, but, hopefully, the Harvard guys will actually produce a good draft. Not to go Mike Polk here but it is statistically improbable to keep having this many horrible drafts in a row, you would think the team can eventually be good for one year by accident in the draft…
It’s finally come to the point that his parents are stepping in. A little too late to do the right thing now. Where were they when he was growing up? He’s a product of “affluenza” and now that he’s claiming suicide (I hope that’s just a threat and not real, but it had to be taken seriously), they step in. Where were they back in his A&M days of rowdy, underage partying and fighting? I lived in College Station during hat time and NO ONR did him any favors by looking the other way. Not once do I remember anything about his parents trying to control or get him help. He’s to blame for a lot of his actions, but the main problems fall on the parents for lack of discipline and taking care of behavioral problems when he as growing up. I hoe it isn’t too late for him to get the help he reall needs now.
Oh, by the way, if you’re on Twitter, you can see the “HURR DURR Browns ruin another QB DURRR” sheep coming out now
I feel you, but unfortunately for all of us, statistics don’t work that way. I still think we have drafted poorly because of who was drafting, and less random chance.
be thankful for such comments as they allow you to trim your follows. I see no such things in my TL.
when I unfollowed Bomani Jones I was labeled a racist. Im scared, I dont want people I dont know to say untrue things about me that other people I dont know may or may not believe anymore
As a parent I really relate to your sentiment, but if you Google around you can find articles about his parent’s outspoken concern for this kid since he left high school. They may have done a bad job otherwise, sure, but there is a lot of evidence that they’ve attempted to help him a lot in the last 4 years, including the very article cited above: outing all this laundry, his parents likely believe, could help force Johnny to get help.
Really hard thing to chicken-and-egg even for mental health professionals with direct access to the patient, let alone the prognosticators of the peanut gallery. Especially if cocaine is involved, which it very likely is, since psychosis is relatively easy to achieve with higher doses of higher quality product.
You know, that’s what I thought through the first round of stories. “Getting plastered in a swan boat is fun! Lighten up, you square.” But if the ex’s story is true, it sounds like things have gone well beyond that. The talk of suicide, the physical abuse… I don’t know.
Fair points. I will stop trying to diagnosis the man. I’m just tired of the whole prevailing narrative that Johnny is simply a spoiled brat. Maybe he is, but that doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have some larger issues that need to be addressed.
And be thankful those people don’t comment here. SHH…. Quiet down.
He could be a drunken, abusive drug user AND the media could be out to get him. Both can be true.
I agree, it has been who has been drafting, but you would think they somehow may have actually gotten one pick right by accident. I guess maybe Duke Johnson would be one…
When Josh Gordon is telling you that you’re too wild to hang out with, that’s when you have to reassess your situation.
I think that’s very much the case. The media is a soulless shark seeking its prey. A good tragedy like this is too good for them to pass up…and they will give it a little coaxing too for good measure.
This is just sad. It’s like he still thinks he’s at A&M.
You’re not wrong, but I guess I just don’t cut anyone a break for not getting help. I understand that for some people it’s harder than for others, but that’s life in general. Some people have it easier than others.
Good point… the first half of that statement is my main point though. This clearly can no longer be seen as “a kid being a kid”.
I’m going to start a rumor that you’re an anti-dentite.
literal LOL. Well played
I don’t remember stories of him being suicidal at A&M. Much sadder/scarier now.
I don’t really understand the sanctimony. Whether he realizes it or not, it seems like his parents and his agent believe he is suffering with mental illness. So why involve the media at all? His parents, his agent, the Browns, should figure out what they can do and whether they are willing to do it. There is no reason to make proclamations about whose fault it is.
This really goes way beyond football or anything secondary to his well-being. Easy to read the stories, hear the quotes, and pretend we know exactly what is going on with Johnny. The truth is that we don’t and neither does the media. Really the most telling thing is his dad’s quote. But only God and Johnny know the demons in his mind that are relentless right now.
I just hope there is someone close to him that will speak some Truth into his life and heart. He’s trying to fill a void in his life with things that were never meant to nor can ever fill that void.
I dont think saying “get back in the car or ill kill us both” is “suicidal. Makes good copy, but some people, when in a rage say horrible horrible things for effect. Still not a good situation by any means, but the idea that just because someone says something stupid that automatically puts them is a certain category (like, suicidal) is just wrong, imho
Ive thought about driving my car into a bridge abutment a time or two, but wouldnt ever actually do it
His dad said he was suicidal and wanted him in a rehab center. Colleen indicated he planned to drop her off and kill himself. I wouldn’t state something such as that lightly.
fair enough. That still gives me more questions than answers, but I wont belabor the point
I agree. I meant the partying, acting out and being irresponsible.
I have never really liked Johnny. As a player or a person. Sure he’s exciting and that’s “cool” rather get wins than an occasional exciting play. But with my personal experience with addiction.this can and will end in one of three ways. Death, jail, or rehab. If he doesn’t accept rehab then that only leaves 2 choices. Death or jail. Any threat of suicide should be taken extremely serious. Movements and foundations like ToWriteLoveonHerArms are created to help prevent and take care of suicide and addiction. My heart felt feelings are to hope this doesn’t end in death. Literally or metaphorically
Bitonio has worked out as well, but to your point we need more than one guy per draft.
And please no more undersized linebackers…. http://kotaku.com/ea-made-a-trailer-out-of-the-tiny-madden-glitch-1631825778
This whole thing is actually getting crazy. Can’t believe he is just as likely to show up at his parents’ house as he is to show up face down in a gutter somewhere.
You reap what you sow, i guess.
