WFNY Roundtable: Meet the Browns staff
February 2, 2016Do you trust David Griffin? – WFNY Podcast No. 454
February 2, 2016Just moments after the Cleveland Browns released an official statement from EVP of Football Operations, Sashi Brown, ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon reports that the team will part ways with quarterback Johnny Manziel once the NFL rules allow such a move.
First, from the Browns:
“We’ve been clear about expectations for our players on and off the field. Johnny’s continual involvement in incidents that run counter to those expectations undermines the hard work of his teammates and the reputation of our organization,” he said. “His status with our team will be addressed when permitted by league rules. We will have no further comment at this time.”
And now, from McManamon:
A career that started with immeasurable excitement at the Browns trading up to draft Manziel ended with fans and the team ready to move on. Manziel will rank as one of the Browns biggest draft disappointments, and busts. …
More social media appearances in clubs followed, and last weekend police were called for an alleged assault in Fort Worth, Texas. Dallas and Fort Worth police are investigating, as is the league.
Manziel’s future is cloudy, as a team would have to sign him knowing he has to get his off-field life together while also improving as a player.
Johnny Football leaves Cleveland with his reputation and image deflated.
The team cannot make any roster changes until after the Super Bowl on February 8. The Browns, however, do not have the salary cap space to waive or cut Manziel, so will be forced to wait until March 9 once the new league year begins. If the team were to make the move in February, it would count as $4.6 million against their cap, something that any analytics department would chalk up as unwise. The cap will, in turn, increase in March, which will allow them to release the quarterback at that point. According to McManamon, this is when the team will make the move, cutting ties with a player who was once depicted to be riding into town on a chariot, then pulled by Brian Hoyer, a quarterback who started a playoff game for his new team, the Houston Texans, this past month.
Manziel’s final resume as a member with the Browns will read as such: Eight games started (2-6 record), 57 percent of passes completed, seven touchdowns thrown, and zero Fs given.

1, Pretty tragic.
2, Who ever was complicit in drafting this guy is an idiot, every one of them.

Is that Johnny himself?
Somebody is going to have to go out there and get annihilated behind that O-line, trying to throw to our munchkin receiving corps. I’d just prefer it not be the franchise QB, whoever that may be. McCown seems like a good dude, albeit his best days in the league are (far) behind him.
Poor Manzealots…

You guys are great, and I did not mean to imply you are fixated on him. But, he has been in the news and it has been reported on.

I didn’t like the draft pick, and I’ve barely liked anything he has offered since then (maybe 2-3 games?). I am happy to look towards the future and never bring him up again.
Yes that McCown. At the least the young QB of the future can see first hand what not to do. Hearing and seeing are two different things. I said it before and I’ll say it again if a QB is drafted #2 overall he becomes my third string possibly fourth. McCown, Davis are 1-2. This team is going nowhere next season. Next season is a red shirt season for all of them coaches included. It’s about installing a foundation not misguided hopes and dreams.
“undermines …the reputation of our organization”
That seems unlikely simply because it’s impossible.
The PR guy edited out “that we have worked tirelessly to build over the last four weeks”…..
Ok, so which of you Manzealots are these guys? Fess up.

From that article: ” They never see the slow decay, because that happens in private. This erosion is now the most prominent thing in Johnny Manziel’s life, because it digs into every part of him, erasing and molding, shaping who he will become. Will he grow to understand and manage it? Or will he crumble, becoming a trivia answer or a cautionary tale?”
Actually, we did see the slow decay. But nonetheless, pretty prophetic…especially the “Will he grow to understand and manage it?”
“How ya doin’ Johnny?”
oh those QBs at #22 overall…..
Oh I know. Just look at comment numbers on posts today. Gotta give readers what they want 🙂
Garry Owen has to be #12!
Select Goff #2 and name him the starter the next day.

When its all said and done, there is nothing left to say or do……
time to part with JaMarcus ‘the Leaf’ Manziel…
i want a victory sip of that brew.
so are they all, all honourable men.
The Browns don’t have enough talent to let talent walk out the door. I am missing something about this. why couldn’t they at least get a 2019 7th rounder?
Johnny needs a higher energy city. Maybe he started just a handful of games over 2 seasons but I’m freaking exhausted, my fandom is Jeb Bushed. Gonna lay down and nap for a while. When I wake up if the bros are gone and the tweedy new boys in the hipster glasses and florescent socks have started to accumulate some playmakers and a semblance of a roster I’ll know I have a team.
This is the business we’ve chosen.
“A career that started with immeasurable excitement at the Browns trading up to draft Manziel ended with fans and the team ready to move on. Manziel will rank as one of the Browns biggest draft disappointments, and busts. …”
Who could have foreseen this sad ending? I mean, anyone other than the 30 GM’s for teams not named ‘Browns’ or ‘Cowboys’?
Fine, fine. Name him the starter later that night.
I think that’s exactly right… we’re all missing something here. There’s something the Browns know that we don’t. And I would say there’s probably enough evidence in the fact that none of us has any clue why his own agency dropped Manziel, one of the most popular players in the league, like a bad habit. I can’t think of another time that has happened. Todd France didn’t even drop Ray Rice as a client.
