Cavs coach Tyronn Lue plans to rest players starting this week

March 16, 2016The busy Wednesday has continued for the Cleveland Browns. According to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, the Browns have signed safety Rahim Moore to a one year deal.
On the same day the team released both linebacker Karlos Dansby and wide receiver Dwayne Bowe and signed former Jets linebacker Demario Davis, the Browns have reportedly made their second signing of the day.
The former Texan who signed a three-year, $12 million deal with Houston before the 2015 season was released just one year into his contract following a disappointing season from the UCLA product. After starting every game for the Broncos in 2014, the 26-year-old played in just seven games (six starts) in 2015. In those seven games, he recorded 16 tackles (10 solo), one forced fumble, one interception, and two passes defended.
Following his breakout season in Denver in 2014, when he totaled 51 tackles (45 solo), one fumble recovery, six passes defended, and four interceptions, the Broncos’ second round pick in 2011 was diagnosed with acute compartment syndrome during a Week 11 matchup against the Chiefs. MMQB’s Joan Niesen did a great job describing exactly what it is.
Compartment syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when pressure builds to extreme levels within muscles. In layman’s terms, swelling occurs, trapping excessive pressure in compartments that we all have in our muscles, which are contained by strong connective tissue called fascia and have a finite amount of room to expand. As blood keeps flowing in and the flow out decreases, pressure mounts, and the surrounding area is deprived of nourishment. Cells die off as the blood flow becomes restricted or cut off entirely, damaging or even killing the affected muscles.
Entering his sixth season in the NFL, the 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety has compiled 214 tackles (181 solo), three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, 23 passes defended, and nine interceptions in 64 games (54 starts).
In case you forgot, it was Moore who allowed Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Jacoby Jones to get behind him for a game-tying touchdown catch from Joe Flacco in the final seconds of the AFC Championship Game in 2013, allowing the Ravens to tie the game and force overtime.
If he can return to his pre-injury form, he could be a viable replacement for Tashaun Gipson, who left the Browns for Jacksonville in free agency last week, and they will have a talented safety at a bargain price. But, if he doesn’t redeem himself, the Browns can release him without losing much. So for Cleveland, this is a low risk-high reward type signing for the team. In the mean time, Moore will compete with Jordan Poyer for the safety job.

But, he’s young, and cheap.
Moneyball!
Jeez, that’s quite a testimonial from Rapoport.
I guess this is the NFL version of platoon. Poyer lefties, Moore righties. ‘Cept the pitcher is ambidextrous.
Meh. We’re using free agency to build depth. He’s cheap and has upside.
Rapoport continued to say, “Moore’s only redeeming quality is that he has a pulse, although probably not a strong one. He is lucky his family lets him come over for Thanksgiving, although they should probably make him sit at the kids’ table.”
Maybe Ozzie will kick in on his salary.

Rapoport is not will not say anything positive about Cleveland so I change the channel every time he shows up on TV. Opinions are like rapoport and he is one. Everyone deserves a chance and after such a freak illness, I hope Moore comes back in a big way. Will be a tremendous acquisition if he can get healthy. Good luck Rahim and I like what the smart guys are doing!!
wow…just wow. We replace a guy who has been a pro-bowler with an older guy, and that man is worse, not to mention having a serious medical condition. How in the hell does this help the team?
Presumably, the Browns medical staff looked deeply into the condition and believe they can do something about it. Thanks for being the ONLY source to report on this!
They either must think the previous guy is no longer of pro bowl caliber &/or isn’t worth the contract, especially on a team that’s purging the roster and getting placeholders in advance of drafting their real team over the next few years.
They’re treating their FAs like the Patriots and Steelers of the world, and hopefully will begin treating their drafts like them too.
good reporting JOSH … rappaport has moore staring alongside whitner … with the browns signing moore , i think whitner is next to get a pink slip. i still i. campbell is going to be a fine S.
good post GREG …
hi WARB … he’s only 26 & i’m certain they’ve checked on his condition & are satisfied … i think this also means whitner is next on the chopping block.
Can we, as a community, stop pretending like “being a pro bowler” or an “all-star” in the NFL and NBA means something?
Half the NFL pro bowl is filled with second and third choices, because the first choices are actually in the play offs.
And in the NBA, Kobe still makes the all-star game despite being a dried out husk of a human being.
Are you going to continue to write Moneyball or analytics on every single Browns post until the season starts?
What available “Pro Bowler” should they have gone and signed after our “Pro Bowler” left?
Hey man! I agree. First, I think the Browns D may be better this year. Call me “overly optimistic” if you want, but on Defense, Dansby was not stopping the run, but was great in Coverage. I think the younger guy will play just as well. And, Gipson, while I will miss him, was a pro-bowler once. I think last years 7th round pick is a sleeper, and Haden WILL be more healthy, period.
2015 Browns: Gipson (injured), Haden (injured), Dansby (great against the pass).
2016 Browns: Morris (as iffy as Gipson), Haden (I think he will be more healthy this season), Demario Davis (better against the run than Dansby, weaker against the pass), and Ekpre-Olomu as a sleeper (I have a feeling he is going to be better than Tramon Williams).
Laugh at me now, but seriously, our Defense may indeed be a little better this upcoming year, and I know, without two OL guys, our OL may stink, but Josh Gordon has actually behaved for a year, and it appears he is WAY more mature than Manziel. Sure, the Browns will most likely win only 4 games next year, but it will be a productive year of having a good draft (lets hope for once) and seeing a young team learn to play together. Haslam will give this Analytics time.
And everyone, Moneyball is in Baseball. This is analytics. With NFL revenue sharing, this is a different game than baseball. Outside of losing Schwartz, I am not disappointed in losing Mack. I wanted them to let Mack go, and sign Stefen Wisniewski, to be blunt. Mack was over-rated, allowed too many sacks, and was not really a pro-bowl center, and was not worth the money, nor would he be around 3-5 years from now when the team competes. Schwartz is the only REAL loss of FA I think. Sure, Benjamin would have been nice, but he is always an ACL away from not playing (so is everyone, I know), but for some reason, his size doesn’t give us much outside of returns. Let Justin Gilbert do that, it is the only thing he is good at…
What’s Clay Matthews Sr. up to?
hi BOB … i’d like to see them go after wisniewski as well.
Just sellin’ them used cars!
Do you agree that our defense has at least possibly gotten better (pre-draft) this year while our offense has taken a step back? I like Wentz now better than Goff but n the new guys I trust…
i think that’s accurate … ray horton is an improvement over jim o’neill & i thought our LB’s last year were the worst unit on the entire team … need to get younger & more athletic at LB … brought in davis & tuggle while offing dansby … i’m guessing c.robertson will sign with the seahawks or anyone but the browns.
whitner was horrible against the run last year … they signed r.moore & d.jones … so , i see whitner getting the axe real soon.
i told GARRY the other day that even if they trade joe thomas , they will find a way to put a decent O-line together. obviously QB is going to be the big one … they have to finally score & get it right at QB.
… and we still have a few playmakers left on offense : barnidge , d.johnson , j.gordon & i’m not sure about crowell … get a very QB , whoever that is … draft a stud WR & maybe even another stud / workhorse RB … and there you have it … easy fix !
and we still have j.thomas, bitonio , greco , bailey (just signed) & *GULP* erving … who knows maybe Tunsil will be their pick at #2 if the titans don’t take him … maybe , just maybe , they like another QB that they can get in the 2nd or 3rd round.
Yep.
Get used to it.
