Crew SC Goes Into Road Trip 0-2
March 17, 2016Let’s Make a “History of the Cleveland Indians” DVD!
March 18, 2016Hi. No time to waste!
Just get to the regular season already Tribe!
I’m impatient all of a sudden. I’ve become impatient with the Browns working toward the draft. I’m impatient with the Cavaliers working toward the playoffs. I’m now impatient for the Indians to get to the regular season. I’m tired of talking about “what ifs” and I want to see what’s what. I know what the Indians need to do. I know what they’ve shown they’re going to do to get ready, (now with 100 percent more Marlon Byrd.) I’m done talking about what could and might happen.
The Cleveland Indians have one of the best rotations in baseball. Despite some other criticisms of Terry Francona, I think the Indians have one of the best managers in the league. Certainly he’s the best manager the Indians have had since Grover and Charlie Manuel. The Indians haven’t proven anything yet, but there’s a whole lot of potential among their younger position players, headlined by Francisco Lindor. Lastly, while I have been critical of the Indians’ acquisitions, they’ve got some guys who could be more Juan Gonzalez than Trot Nixon in terms of veterans on the wrong side of their prime with something to prove.
Will they? Won’t they? Enough with all the speculation. Let’s find out! Let’s go.
Here’s the Tribe preview I did with TD on the podcast.
A non-sequel sequel to Cloverfield that’s better than the original…
I liked Cloverfield. Despite wide-ranging complaints from fans about the shaky cam effects and stories of people having to leave theaters to stop themselves from throwing up, I really loved what that movie was in a “found footage” genre. Yes, I got myself a big fat headache a couple times watching it, but regardless, Cloverfield accomplished something. It used a genre and told a story that was worth living with its characters. It folded genres in a way that was copied frequently thereafter – maybe even better – but I couldn’t escape how revolutionary it all felt at the time. That was eight years ago in 2008, but it feels even longer ago than that to me. And now, somehow off the heels of doing a new Star Wars film, J.J. Abrams’ company has produced something of a sequel to Cloverfield, except it’s totally different.
What remains the same is the genre mashup. In 10 Cloverfield Lane, they’ve combined sci-fi, suspense, mystery and even a tiny bit of action into a really great genre-bending movie that featured some pretty good performances from John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.
In so many ways it couldn’t have less to do with Cloverfield. I’m not spoiling anything when I say it’s not a found footage film. It doesn’t feature the same storytelling style where one of the characters is essentially narrating the film from behind the camera. It’s much more typical in that aspect, where the camera isn’t a character that any of the other characters would ever look at or talk to throughout the story. Instead we’re left with a story of mystery, survival, and some twists and turns that you really won’t see coming. The twists aren’t so planted as to make you laugh at them like when Kevin Smith used them expertly as a comic device in Red State.
Through it all, we’re right back in the Cloverfield universe and it feels like it belongs in this loose, burgeoning sub-genre of J.J. Abrams’ creation, and yet it doesn’t make much sense at all that it fits. It just does. I recommend the movie and really think most people will like it. I had decent expectations and it delivered.
P.S. I hope you’re not claustrophobic.
Your weekly moment of soccer zen…
Decent goal, but it’s all about that run.
Into It. Over It. Who You Are Does Not Equal Where You Are
Andrew sent this to me, and after he sent it I knew I’d seen this band this year, but couldn’t remember when or with whom. As it turned out, they opened for Mineral. As I told Andrew, this band could have been a reincarnated combination of the Beatles and Pink Floyd and I wouldn’t have heard it that night with the expectation level I had for a Mineral show 18 years in the making. But alas, I did listen this week and fell in love with their new album, specifically this song. Thanks Andrew. Check it out everyone.

As excited as I am for baseball to begin, I don’t know if I can take another Indians season. On opening day, it will have been 1007 days since the Tribe were all alone in first place. (Inadvertent reference to the Buzzard!) I have had to summon all my remaining Cleveland to avoid the slightest feelings of optimism lest my fragile sports psyche get crushed by yet another seven win April.
Think I’ll see the new Cloverfield this weekend. I’ve been able to remain mostly spoiler free.
And, the other side is in 2011 and 2012, we were in 1st place a ton just to have the rug pulled from us (though I don’t think many thought we were legit teams those years). Regardless, Craig showed previously, the fans won’t show up unless we are in first place:

Did you really just turn this into an attendance conversation? *SIGH* Yet another reason I’m dreading another season of baseball.
I just loved the chart Craig made a few weeks ago and you opened the door to re-post it. I don’t delve into the attendance things much once the season begins. I think I went into it once last year (mid-July when Lindor was doing Lindor things and people weren’t noticing).
I’m not seeing how I opened, brushed up against, looked at, or thought of the attendance door. Next time I admit to suffering from Cleveland sports fatigue, you’ll probably use it as an excuse to post Carlos Santana statistics or a Browns draft scouting report. I’m on to you.
Naquin and Ursh are hot. Brantley is ahead of schedule, Bode writes an up piece on Santana and a Cleveland team signs 2 veteran free agents to plug holes. Hope springs eternal. Bring it on.
Absolutely killer tune. Fresh and familiar at the same time. Thanks for sharing.
My mind is a just a strange place. Craig talking Indians in his WWW, you mentioning lack of being in first place…immediately went to that chart Craig discussed in his WWW a few weeks back.
You are a fan who’s interested has waned since the Indians have not been in first place. Not that big of a jump, IMO.
I am seeing Cloverfield tonight. Saw the trailer awhile ago, all I know is Goodman is in it. Thanks for this, it increased my excitement level a bit higher.
538 did a thing in the last 24hrs on Goodman as a supporting actor that I enjoyed.
If the Indians were in first place, I wouldn’t be jumping on a plane to attend a game either.
I’m talking about how the Indians reach into my soul and rip out my very will to live, year after year. Something as mundane as the attendance travails of the Dolan’s property does not compare to that of which I speak.
It was a handy indicator of how things have gone. But no, I wasn’t thinking along those lines at all. I just don’t know if I can handle the roller coaster ride this year. Yet again.
The Indians ARE in first place. All teams start there 🙂
And hey, if we didn’t have the drama, then it wouldn’t be baseball. The hard is what makes it great.
I truly feel the 2016 Indians are better than any of the past three teams. Are they good enough? I don’t know.
If you think your psyche is fragile now, wait until we win 105 games and start fretting over every single playoff game.
Yeah, but sitting in the sun eating hot dogs and drinking beers is not a bad way to pass the time, even if there’s bad baseball going on in the background.
more than that…every single inning, every single at bat, every single pitch. there are precious few things as unnerving as watching a postseason baseball game when you are heavily invested in the outcome.
I am getting a salary of 6800 dollars each week. Over a year ago I was in a horrible condition ,,,yjl jobless and no bank credit . Thanks to one of my friends who showed me a way where I was able to gather myself and making average of 57 d/h. So it can change your life as it has changed mine.
