Browns select WR Rashard Higgins with No. 172 and CB Trey Caldwell with No. 173
April 30, 2016Browns select LB Scooby Wright of Arizona with pick No. 250, their final selection of the 2016 NFL Draft
April 30, 2016The Browns have not only acquired college players today, but now veterans in the NFL. Cleveland pulled off a trade with the Miami Dolphins for cornerback Jamar Taylor. To complete the deal, the Browns agreed to swap seventh round picks to take on Taylor. The Browns gave No. 223 to Miami, receiving No. 250 in exchange. The acquisition of Taylor by the Browns marks the first trade of the 2016 NFL Draft that involved a NFL veteran.
Jamar Taylor was the Dolphins’ second round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft out of Boise State. In his three seasons in Miami, he has posted 82 tackles and four passes defended. He has been an underwhelming player for the Dolphins, unable to live up to his second round status. So, the Browns are definitely taking a no risk flyer on a player who could turn it around in a new situation.
Here is his NFL.com draft breakdown when he came out of Boise State in 2013:
STRENGTHS: Not afraid to get physical with receivers, often redirects their routes with strong hands. Very good straight-line speed. Works well in press-bail coverage. Fluid hips, smooth in turns and out of the back pedal. Shows the athletic ability to make plays on the football in contested situations. Will stick his nose in the run game when he is able to set the edge. WEAKNESSES: Recovery speed is questionable. Poor technique in press coverage. Gives up too much ground on outside breaking routes. Can be fooled by play action, jumps up to allow free receivers behind him. Must bring in more difficult interceptions where he needs to uses his hands away from his frame. Inconsistent tackler in space, can break down to wrap legs but also gives weak cut efforts.
