WFNY’s 2016 NFL Draft Coverage: Joe Gilbert’s Top Five Running Backs
April 20, 2016Trying to figure out the Cleveland Browns’ trade with the Philadelphia Eagles
April 20, 2016Update: According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Browns and Eagles have agreed on a trade that will send the No. 2 pick to Philadelphia, along with a fourth-round pick in 2017. In return, the Browns will receive the No. 8 pick in this year’s draft along with a third-rounder (No. 77), a fourth-rounder (No.100), a first-round pick in 2017, and a second-round pick in 2018. The new-look Browns will now have five picks in the top 100, including the back-to-back selections at No. 99 and 100. For an idea of who might still be available at No. 8, head to this primer on the early returns in this year’s first round.
All we can tell you is that Chad Johnson is excited.
Browns fans are you excited yet or still don't understand what Hue is getting ready to do?

9:30 a.m.: The days of accepting Brett Ratliff and Abe Elam in a trade scenario appear to be no more. While the Cleveland Browns still own the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, multiple reports are circulating involving a trade scenario with the Philadelphia Eagles that would net the Browns a truck load of draft selections in 2016 as well as 2017.
Here’s Yahoo! Sports’ Charles Robinson with the details:
Make no mistake, the Eagles are thinking about it. The Cleveland Browns and Eagles have engaged in conversations about the No. 2 pick, two league sources confirmed to Yahoo Sports. The sources declined to offer parameters, but Fox Sports’ Alex Marvez reported the Eagles and Browns have reached a framework. In it, the Eagles would net the No. 2 overall pick in exchange for Philadelphia’s first-rounder (No. 8 overall), two third-rounders (Nos. 77 and 79 overall), as well as a first- and third-round pick in the 2017 draft.
If you’re keeping score at home, the Browns would be able to stay in the ever-popular top eight, would be able to then select one of the players discussed here, and obtain an additional first-round selection and three third-rounders as an added bonus. If the Browns (with history on their side) are not sold on North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz, but the Eagles are, this is the rare win-win deal that nets both teams exactly what they are looking for. According to Robinson, though the Eagles have committed a bunch of money to mid-level quarterbacking talent, they feel that both Jared Goff and Carson Wentz—one of which is guaranteed to be available at No, 2 because math—are “cornerstones.” And the Browns, while we don’t know exactly how they feel about either quarterback, are sparing no expense to see what they can obtain for what has suddenly become the most valuable pick in the draft.
Nothing imminent here, but yes, GM Sashi Brown has initiated the calls to gauge market for his No. 2 pick. https://t.co/gBtqzx4OLY

.@JeffDarlington describes the #Browns as "actively shopping" No. 2, with Sashi Brown making calls inside the Top 10. Fun is just beginning.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) April 19, 2016
Browns have engaged in trade talks but it remains, in words of one team official, “uncertain” whether they ultimately will trade No. 2 pick.
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) April 19, 2016
There is a belief that the Browns may not deal the pick until after the first selection is made, as the uncertainty of which player is remaining would be removed, thus solidifying the selection’s true value, but the Eagles reportedly want this finalized soon. There is another belief that only the media believes the Browns are even considering a quarterback, likely fueled by several mock drafts and local reporters who continue to pedal the idea that it’s quarterback or bust. Of course, the Eagles may want to trade up and not take a quarterback.
With as few as four teams looking up to make a deal with the Browns, it’s rarefied air, but it appears that the folks in Berea are in the driver’s seat when it comes to the leverage game.

Pick every player at one position every year. In ten years, you’ll have like 1/5 of your roster set.
Gotta have some patience with him. Was only a rookie last year and was playing out of position. If he stinks as a center, then I’ll grab my pitchfork.
Guys, this is the out of the box thinking that will land us in the FO in 3 years for the next rebuild. Someday they’ll call us the WFNY Brain Trust. Or something. They will call us something. Keep it up.
Well, Garry, after this trade, I’ve finally come around to agreeing that now we should *sniff* trade Joe Thomas. Not much point in keeping him if we can add to the haul.
This is sort of like (although not at all like) taking your sick old dog to the vet to be put to sleep. Sad as hell, but it’s for the best.

I hate the thought of it, but you’re right, it’s for the best.

9 straight pro bowls…. he’ll go to Canton a Brown.
“we’ll get chad kelly or d.watson for sure next year.”
except by then, their warts will be exposed and they will no longer be the hot prospect du jour
Whatever man, Im done investing any time or energy into the Browns. The hardest part is going to be not taking part in our little community here. Wake me up in September

This is my Superbowl!
(psst: It’s Order 73)
We’ll never forget you, Jerry Thomas.
It’s named after Hank Fraley. Don’t ask why. Just know that it has something to do with “sand people.” It doesn’t need to make sense.
If the Browns aren’t in position to draft either of the top 2 QBs next year, I reserve the right to throw out a big “I TOLD YOU SO”. It’s my right as a skeptic.
Is this because 90% of the players selected will claim to be “injured” to avoid going to the Pro Bowl?
First off, everyone should read the article from our own Kevin Meers that establishes the basics of the trade evaluation we most likely use- to sum it up, we believe many teams over-value the first and second round and under-value the rest. We hired this guy partially because of his work in this area.
Here is what Meers would say we do next: Trade down from 8 with TN for something like their 15 and their second round pick and a few late round picks over the next two years. Then, recognizing that the first picks of the second and third day (which we own) are valued higher than the picks that preceded them due to teams having extra time, trade down from all of them, all the while targetin teams that are either close to contention with heavy need (TN), dumb/desperate (Eagles) or are likely to have high draft picks the next year.
Don’t be surprised if we end up with even more 4th round picks than we already have, 15 as our highest pick, and no quarterback taken until the third day. RGIII will be our starter for one or two years.
I’ll jump on that bandwagon.
I’ll sharpen the prongs for you…
HOLY CRAP! I’m like a real NFL GM over here. Let it be written that I made the above comment a few hours before the trade. And I didn’t even go to Harvard (Just the “Harvard Of The South,” haha)!!
yes.
I’m kind of surprised with how annoyed I am by the trade. I’ve been anticipating it would happen, but I think what is bugging me isn’t the trade. It’s this “we can’t lose!” attitude of Browns fans. Like there wasn’t an opportunity cost to this trade down. The buzz I am seeing on Twitter is all about “Next step is to get Deshaun Watson in 2017!” and “Browns will build their team, then find their QB!”
This is just a reminder that in 17 drafts from 2000 through 2016, the Browns were the worst team in the league over that span and were never once in position to draft the first QB taken. Not one time. So we’re due! Forgive me if I’m skeptical… this trade down may well be an amazing thing for the Browns, but in no way does it mean the Browns will be climbing out of the gutter by drafting the top QB in the 2017 draft.
I see it as a bunch of opportunities to get it right instead of just putting all of the chips on one number and letting the wheel spin.
cbn jn6m.. Some jobs are very good that you may get a good cash with, giving some time sticking with your pc.. nice plural!
If you use the Kevin Meers chart, and make future picks worth exactly one round worse, here is the valuation you get:
Browns get 759.8
Philly gets 511.3
difference is 248.5 = #18/#19 first round overall pick.
That’s a BIG win.

… duly noted , my good man.
love it … my favorite movie of all-time !!
Indeed.
There is no Dana. Only Zuul.
This is probably the right way to view it. I would view it this way if I didn’t love Carson Wentz and feel like we just passed up a chance to split eights in hopes of a future chance to split aces (someone check my betting logic, but I think I worded that right). I think this is going to be my last complaint about passing up Wentz though… doesn’t do any good to cry over spilled milk. I’m very intrigued to see what the Browns do with that #8 pick… sounds like they will probably trade back if they have a partner who wants to come up to 8.
Has anyone done the updated value math yet? I know future picks slots are unknowable but what might it be with educated guesses?
hi ABE … RGB re-did it below.
