Browns select WR Jordan Payton of UCLA with pick No. 154
April 30, 2016Browns select WR Rashard Higgins with No. 172 and CB Trey Caldwell with No. 173
April 30, 2016The Browns spent a good chunk of Day 3 addressing offensive needs — especially in the pass catching arena — and continued on late in fifth round adding a Spencer Drango with pick No. 168. In Drango, the Browns added a four-year starter at left tackle while at Baylor, but a player who will likely move his 6-foot-5-inch, 315-pound frame to the guard spot (if not right tackle) once in Cleveland.
Given the team’s focus on the ‘grading’ side of things, here’s Pro Football Focus’ thoughts on Drango and what fans can expect at the next level:
What he does best:
— Thick and strong upper body. Can turn defensive linemen’s shoulders when he gets under their pads through sheer power
— Projection to guard is an easy one with how much he pulled. Launched linebackers and defensive linemen alike when he had a clear read and could square them up
— Few better at riding a defensive linemen where they were going. Was very good against one-gap defenses where he wouldn’t give an inch vertically yet could create serious lateral movement
— Two straight years of dominant gradingBiggest concern:
— Awkwardness to his movements. Very top-heavy build. Change of direction ability is poor and if he had to adjust his pull blocks he was whiffing
— Baylor offense was so limited in the block it asked Drango to execute. Downblock after downblock
— A consistent hitch in his giddyup when trying to get out of his stance. Especially apparent when asked to pull
— Terribly late with his hands in pass protection. Shilique Calhoun completely exposed him in last year’s Cotton BowlBottom line:
Few produced as well as Drango in our system the previous two seasons, but there are obvious limitations to his game. He’ll likely struggle out of the gate, but has the tools to be a competent run blocker in the NFL.
A tough kid who gets credited for his awareness and feet, Drango will have to prove he can take his career at a Big 5 school and transition it to the complex blocking schemes at the next level.
The Browns closed out the fifth round with a pair of back-to-back play makers. Stay tuned.
