WFNY’s 2016 NFL Draft Coverage: Joe Gilbert’s Top Five Quarterbacks
April 22, 2016There’s hope for Danny Shelton and Cameron Erving according to PFF’s NFL draft re-grade
April 22, 2016Heading into last weekend’s Spring Game, Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer mentioned that there were plenty of position battles taking place in the glorified — and sold out — practice at Ohio Stadium. Although he said that it would be difficult to lock down a starting nod during the game, it seems as though one player did.
Meyer announced that junior Jamarco Jones will be the team’s starting left tackle this fall, per Eleven Warriors. The coach broke the news in front of the team on Wednesday.
The upcoming season will be Jones’ third in Columbus. During his first season as a Buckeye, he appeared in 10 games as a true freshman, helping Ohio State win the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship. Last season, he played in all 13 games as a sophomore, primarily as a backup and on special teams.
This fall, the 6-foot-5, 310-pound will have his hands full while trying to meet high expectations from previous left tackles, replacing All-American and expected first round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, Taylor Decker.
Meyer now has three of his five offensive line spots nailed down. Jones will join returning starters Pat Elflein and Billy Price as starters, but the other two starters have still yet to be named. But, for what it’s worth, exiting spring practice, Isaiah Prince was the right tackle and true freshman Michael Jordan (no, he is not related to that Michael Jordan) is the left guard, according to cleveland.com’s Bill Landis, but that can obviously change by the time the season starts.
“(Prince) is very close, he just has to grow up a little bit. He had a very good spring, so it’s very close. It’s just not quite where Jamarco Jones is at.”
For the first time while donning the scarlet and gray, Jones will start for the Buckeyes come fall. He will have pave the way for quarterback J.T. Barrett and running backs Mike Weber and Bri’onte Dunn.
