April 1, 2016Report: Indians, Rangers discussing starter-for-reliever deal
April 1, 2016When the Cleveland Browns signed quarterback Robert Griffin III it was believed Josh McCown would be traded instead of remaining in Cleveland to serve as a backup. While this could still take place, and the team has yet to tip their hand in either direction, McCown is saying all of the right things in his willingness to compete with Griffin for the starting quarterback job.
Per his comments on PFT Live Thursday:
“Right now, it’s come in and compete and show up, so that’s what I’ll do. If that changes, that changes, and I’ll go to that next place and compete there as well… I’ll go with that mindset, and if they see differently and I am traded or moved along, I’ll appreciate my time there and then go embrace the next opportunity.”
Like the rest of us, the veteran quarterback can see the writing on the wall that the former Baylor star will start over him if the two remain on the team together. While McCown doesn’t want to sit (or stand) on the sidelines while RG3 plays above him, the veteran admitted that he will accept whatever the role he is given by head coach Hue Jackson.
“You want to compete and you want to have a shot to play, and so if a guy comes in and he’s perceived to be the starter, as a competitor, you don’t like that. But at the same time, understand that when you go through a coaching change and a restructuring of the organization, they’re going to do whatever they can to help this football team be better. And so as a Cleveland Brown, I’m all for that and I’m behind that 100 percent, so we welcome Robert into the quarterback room as a part of our team, and I’ll do everything I can to help Robert.”
The 36-year-old will turn 37 on July 4. In his first season with the Browns, he completed 186-of-292 pass attempts (63.7 percent) for 2,109 yards, 12 touchdowns, and four interceptions in eight starts while also running for 98 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries while battling through injuries and a concussion all season. The gunslinger still has two years remaining on his contract, both of which will be at $5 million a year.
In case you haven’t noticed, the Browns have had plenty of starting quarterbacks since their return in 1999. While RG3 is expected to add to the list, and the Browns are entering yet another rebuilding process, the former Sam Houston State product stated that he would love to help Cleveland win alongside Griffin.
“The Browns’ quarterback woes have been well documented. For us to put a good quarterback on the field who can be productive and help our team win, that’s our ultimate goal. We’ll see how it plays out, but I look forward to working with him.”
McCown seems to be saying all the right things, especially the fact that he would mentor a rookie quarterback, but with the signing of RG3 and the team still expected to select a quarterback with their No. 2 overall pick — both ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay project Cleveland to take a quarterback — in the upcoming draft, it’s hard to see McCown not being dealt from the team by the time next season rolls around. At last glance, the New York Jets and Los Angeles Rams remain as likely landing spots.

Hyperbolizing here, but McCown will go down as the most under-appreciated Browns QB. He’s been nothing but professional since he got here despite some refusing to believe it’s genuine, and no matter what numbers he put up, it was always still MANZIEL>>>>>>>>>>>>>MCCOWN.
Josh, have been on vacation in Bora Bora?
Have you missed the status of your O-line?

He sees it.
“If they see differently and I am traded or moved along, I’ll appreciate my time there and then go embrace the next opportunity.”
That’s code for, “Get me outta here, somebody, anybody. Please.”
Josh, buddy, keep your eye on #74. He will be your starting center next year…

That GIF is telling. #74 is BLOWN AWAY. Mack blocks no one (but it appears he was to find a linebacker. Thomas holds his block, so does Schwartz, no gone. Greco runs forward and misses a LB and safety would would have made the tackle for no gain (or a minimal one) had our other number one pick (#74) done his job. Basically, this shows only 2/5th of our OL being good on that play
I think McCown is actually an above average NFL QB, but has only 2 years left in his tank. May as well trade him to Denver and get something for him. Even though he is our best QB. This team has no chance for playoffs this year, so year one is about growing and learning to play (the youngsters). Therefore, trade the veteran since you signed RGIII. It tells me they are not drafting a QB with the first pick. I would say trade Haden, and draft Ramsey to start opposite Ekpre-Olamu or however you spell his name. Start with a great young duo like Minifield and Dixon, and start building the team through the draft. Start young, but keep Thomas, he has 8 years left in his tank I would bet…

I can’t see any scenario where McCown is on the roster in Sept, other than a major injury.

If you haven’t read Shanahan’s take on RGIII, it is well worth the effort. McCown and RGIII couldn’t be further apart in style. I can’t imagine Jackson scheming two different offenses for these guys.
Will be really, really interesting to see what happens with that No. 2 pick. Neither Goff nor Wentz are read option guys, but there are a number of them that will go in later rounds.
You know, there are times when I just hate the you guys are right. OMG, what a trainwreck.
Sometimes we hate it too.
